cause this is HL3 we're likely talking about, why would they finish it at this point.
It's not Half-Life 3, it's Black Mesa. A mod. The countdown is on www.bmrf.us - which is confirmed to be a website related to the Black Mesa mod.
so it's what? an HD rebuild of HL1 then?
How about you use Google and look up "a mod" is? And then what "Black Mesa" is in relation to it? Or, even better, read the news post as it already gives a brief but spot-on description of it IN THE VERY FIRST SENTENCE?
*looks at the several dozen mods I have for Skyrim, looks at the comment telling to Google what a mod is, questions who in this day and age doesn't know what a mod is.*

uh huh ...Condescending much? I can do that to, and I'm better at it. If you wanna demonstration, go ahead, -.- get cute with me again -.-

I did look it up after I posted my reply, figured you'd not bother getting back to me in a timely matter if at all. It's not a mod, it's a remake done be fans. It's just HL 1 in source. I'd be impressed if they had based the rebuild on a game that wasn't over hyped to hell and back, or ya know, used the time to make something original instead of slapping a fresh coat of pain on some one else work.

What on does half life have to do with the Hopi tribe? I am confused why they used this name. Black Mesa is on the Hopi reservation, it really makes no sense for them to use the name.

Because Half-Life is set in the Black Mesa Research Facility?

It is a mod (requiring the SDK Base) and it is not just Half-Life 1 in Source as it is remade from Scratch
Top right: Original Half-Life. Rest of the screen: Black Mesa mod. [http://vignette3.wikia.nocookie.net/half-life/images/f/f7/Mr3_officecomplex_2.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20090515155955&path-prefix=en]

And once more we see how a bunch of people can read half of a news post's title and assume that it proves their biases.

Black Mesa was great for what it was- a condensed, prettied up reimagining of the first Half-Life- but I don't see myself paying money for it.

Is this a set up to a joke I'm not getting or do you genuinely not understand what Black Mesa is in relation to the Half-Life story-verse?

If it's the former, maybe clue me in? I like jokes. Even the dumb ones, sometimes.

If it's the latter, well...

Hope that helps.

If I may, I have a question that I'm genuinely curious about. If you care so little for the series and feel it is so vastly overrated so as to not warrant anyone's time or devotion, why bother wasting your own time posting in this thread? What purpose does it serve you or the discussion at hand besides belittling people for enjoying the things they like?

It, coincidentally enough, reminds me of a recent Critical Miss issue.

I ask only because it truly baffles me. I see it so often on this forum and I honestly do not understand why posters feel compelled to post comments like that. I mean, I'm not a fan of Mass Effect, but you won't see me posting "Mass Effect is dumb and overrated" in every thread that pops up about the game. Hell, I won't even bother posting in them at all unless the thread topic is on something else and the game is just a segue into the topic.

Well I am a man that has lived and breathed Master Race's modding for as long as I have been a gamer ...
You do realize Black Mesa had more hype behind it then most mid-class games. How can you NOT have heard of it?

Black Mesa is a LOT more then just porting Half Life 1 to source. They REBUILT the game. Its levels are different, the AI is different, the balance is different... it is not a simple port or a fresh coat of paint.

Your google search was bad it seems.
Also:
Half Life 1 is not overhyped IMHO :p
There are more impressive mods out there. Mods that make most AAA devs look like amateurs. But I have beaten that horse too much...
>.>

I'm a be totally straight with you. Leading of with 'Master Race' anything does not paint the rest of your post in the most positive of lights to me. Just, ya know, warning you now.

anyway, with that little disclaimer out of the way!

Easy. I have not even the slightest of fucks to give about Half Life, 1 or 2. There's nothing about it I found particularly interesting or good, so I tend to ignore it when possible. As a result, I thought this was some HL3 related thing till I found it it was just a remake in a better engine. And it is a remake. They are remaking the game, using a better set of tools. Changing the levels and AI doesn't change that fact in the slightest.

As to HL1 or just HL in generals overhyped status... well ... we're gonna have to disagree about that.

Mostly them responding the way they did really. If they hadn't felt then need to be all condescending like that I'd have just let it go and moved on.

Also, not saying this remake looks bad, just that if they have the skills to do all the things they're doing, why not make something original, instead of just making a better version of a 17 year old game.(did look up the age of the game)

@both

I mean, why people mod isn't lost on me, adding to a game you like is cool and all but if you and your team have the skills to build a game from scratch like these guys seem to, why wouldn't you try to make something that's actually yours instead of just rebuilding some one else work. That's what I'm not getting.

Mmmm, doesn't really answer my question.

As you said yourself, "I have not even the slightest of fucks to give about Half Life, 1 or 2. There's nothing about it I found particularly interesting or good, so I tend to ignore it when possible."

So my question was: Why even bother posting in the tread in the first place?

The condescending responses are a different matter.

Why wouldn't you try to make something that's actually yours instead of just rebuilding some one else work. That's what I'm not getting.
Why do (some) filmmakers do remakes? Or put references to pop-culture material in their films? Or place 'easter-eggs' in some scenes as a nod to the fans?

It's for the passion of the source material. They love the originals, so they like to put their talents towards paying homage to the originals while giving them their own personal spin. Naturally, some game makers like to do the same.

Is it really that surprising to you?

[edit]
As a side note:
Some devs (or would-be devs, really) like to use projects like this to demonstrate their talents. Being able to showcase their own unique spin on an established IP can show to prospective employers their ability to work within certain guidelines, as well as a demonstration of their artistic abilities.

*shrugs* Fuck all to do on a Saturday and the RPs I'm in/running haven't updated yet? I'm a go with that since my initial post had this mistaken for an HL3 thing.

Take advantage of the fan base to make a quick buck, appeal to the lowest common denominator ...

with all the remakes we've been getting lately, 'annoys' would be a better word then 'surprises'

I guess, still think they should be working on something original rather then a remake. Can still be HL related if that floats their proverbial boat.

No offense, but why should anyone care if you or anyone else is/are impressed with this remake? It was done entirely at the modding team's own expense, has been put out for free, and is simply a face-lift to a game that they love and want to play again in a different light.

I honestly see no reason for you to be so judgmental of a free remake that has been publicly blessed by Valve, aside from egocentric reasons.

Even if you'd initially mistaken this news for some Half-Life 3 reveal, I still don't understand, given how much you've made it apparent that you don't care about the series, why you'd bother with the thread at all. I would think you'd simply see the headline, think to yourself, "Egh, don't care." and move on to something else. Unless there was some ulterior motive in posting.

I don't know. Might just be me, but that's what I do when I see a thread on a topic I care nothing about. I ignore it and move on to something else.

But then, I understand that not everyone is me. Which is definitely a good thing. I'd hate a world full of me.

*shudder*

Take note that I said some. Not all remakes are half-assed cash grabs. Some are genuine labors of love.

with all the remakes we've been getting lately, 'annoys' would be a better word then 'surprises'
Then why the confusion as to why they'd do the project? You clearly understand the motives - or, well, some motives - behind such projects, even if they 'annoy' you.

I guess, still think they should be working on something original rather then a remake. Can still be HL related if that floats their proverbial boat.
If their ideas centered around re-imagining the original game, then working on something else would've been a waste of their time.

But anyway, you've answered my questions, I suppose. I'm still a bit baffled, I thank you for the clarification.

And, for your sake, I hope no one remakes something you enjoy. ;)

They did.(Metriod: Zero Mission is one such example) A few times actually, but that was back before remakes and reboots where a dime a dozen, and little more then a graphical update in most cases. Anymore though, meh ... they really need to do something substantial for me to care.

and, ya know >.> be the remake of a game I like.

In other words, you want every to just cater to you specifically and if you're not interested in something, people shouldn't even make it.
Can you be anymore egoistic and self-centered than that?
