Black Ops Will Be Brutal, But Not Gratuitous, Says Treyarch

Well when you do anything set in Vietnam, and try to make it realistic, I imagine it would be hard not to make it dark, gritty and controversial to someone. When I watch gameplay, I think I'm looking forward to the quiet stuff more than the crazy, whiz-bang shooting and chaotic battles. I would like to see missions where there's little fighting in them at all. It's been done before but it always ends the mission with a mandatory 'things go tits up' part.
The best missions of CoD are the stealthy sniper ones where you don't make pretend it's a Michael Bay movie. One of the best missions I've ever played in any game was 'Ghillies in the Mist', and the best mission in WaW was the one where you kill Amsel.

Treyarch's Josh Olin said that it was immersion, rather than controversy, that the studio was aiming for.
This is close to having me sold on the game, if they'll be taking this kind of approach. I still want to wait and see some reviews after it comes out, though I like World at War, so I'll have to wait and see.
I'm still cautious about the game, but Treyarch does give me some hope. I really dig their attitude. What a waste No Russian was. It could have been someyhing interesting, but the nonsenical, paper-thin plot made it feel like a cheap attempt at getting some headlines. And to think I defended that level....at least, before the game came out. Hopefully Black Ops is better.

"He said that the game would get under people's skin and make them feel 'angry or righteous or sad,'"

I sure did get angry at Treyarch's last COD game, because it was terrible.
Dunno about you, but I'd take WaW over MW2 any day.
I never had any terrible experiences with MW2, the worst I would have to say would be someone being in the rock on fuel. I just remember all the times that people would glitch under the maps in WAW or the unlimited waves of enemies that attacked you until you got to certain points in the level.

Immersion, controversy it doesn't matter what they're calling it as it seems to be getting the game a lot of public attention.

...ah screw it. I thought that, "No Russian" was a very clever application of insightful and innovative Game Storytelling, a gem hidden in a pile of standard Macho power fantasy (Not that a standard Macho power fantasy is all bad. They still teach Norse myths in school). But also, good for Treyarch. The storytelling still needs to stand, but sounds like they have a good starting direction.

I've killed over tens of thousands of civilians in GTA.
Thats what basically sold the game...

and GTA people are squishy and screamy and give a certain humor when then flop across your hood... IE Saints Row 2 + Car Mass Hole (cheat) and drive thru people and snicker with glee as grandma does a cartwheel over the roof..

Let me guess: The player shoots a little girl's puppy and has to scoop up the remains with a sheet of paper with a Holocaust denial written on it.

hopefully their attempts at the grittiness here will be better than those in WaW
actually, I just hope the game is better than WaW...period

(I know a lotta people now love WaW...esp to counter MW2, but I'm not talking about multiplayer haha so just the campaign)

Do you really need to ask that question? You may have gunned down hundreds of faceless people in GTA, but none of those actions can be compared to what happened in MW2. The main issue with the killing of the civilians in MW2 was the concept surrounding it. Initially, you were basically assisting terrorists with the needless slaughter of innocent people. Secondly, you were carrying out said act in a busy airport. The only way they could have picked a more sensitive location was if they dropped you into a school playground. Or a nursery. I would presume IW wouldn't be able to be that careless anyway.

That, and the whole No Russian, was inherently flawed, mostly in the premise and the way it did (or didn't) fit into the whole scenario.

Not to mention the fact that in the GTA games, you have so for always played, if not a criminal, then someone out on the fringes of society. Such a person, thnking simply for the sake of this discussion, would be more likely to gun down a crowd of innocent people than the US soldier you were in the shoes of at that point in MW2.
Clicking a button labled fire and making a batch of polygons and pixels recieve damage, eventually falling over when their damage limit is reached and they are labeled as dead is the same no matter what the arrangement of polygons is supposed to look like (terrorist, civilian, alien, Spiderman, etc.).

Simple fact is killing anything in any game is exactly the same, it is all a hodgepodge of little triangles covered in little squares processed by something tha tonly reads in 1's and 0's.
Im sorry, but when I read a comment like this I get so....frustrated. If your viewing the innocent people gunned down in a Russian air port as one's and zero's....then your not playing the game right. either the game has not immersed you into it's world (which does happen, A lot) , or you yourself have refused to become immersed into the game, and in doing so, have caused the game to have far, far less of an impact than it would. the people in that Air-port all had families, friends, husbands, wives, daughters, children, parents...all of whom are now dead, at your hand, all for the sake of a cover up, that will inevitably fail. playing through No Russian twice is heart-breaking. because you know your going to murder all these innocent people...for nothing.

I hope you aren't simply posting this out of a desire to look "tough" on the internet. and I do hope that in the next gaming narrative you experience, you try and look at it as more than just one's and zero's. you'll have a lot more fun that way.

No, they don't have families. They are all digital representations of humans with no real emotion. They follow a predetermined path and sound files are played to make them seem human, but they are not and they never will be.

Morality is subjective. What is wrong to someone is right to someone else. You may think that No Russian is wrong, I see nothing controversial about it. There is nothing more than a few blood splatter textures and the people fall into ragdoll mode. Compare that to any of the kills in God of War 3, like Hermes, Helios, Kronos, Hades, etc. All of those are MUCH more graphic and brutal but No Russian is worse just because the "people" "dying" are meant to be civilians?

I just hope that this game is as good as they are making it sound. I just have this gut feeling that it will be, and I haven't been wrong in a while.

It has no realism attached to It, crazy Servian man goes on helicopter rampage through New York dropping cars on old ladies would never happen, the cops would shoot him In an instant, also GTA has been beaten to death back when It was popular. Remember Jack Thompson? He spearheaded the GTA fight.

Now the big ticket item is your Call Of Duty's, Halo's, and Gear's, Gears has aliens, Halo has aliens, and Call Of Duty has brown people, no one cares about them. But when you create a "vaguely" possible situation. Tha is mass murder, ruthless murder, of countless civilians, unamarmed, from a first person perspective. It Is vaguely reminiscent, to take a phrase of old Jack's, a "muder simulator".

Now back to Black Ops, we're In Nam, a war which still remains as a blemish among American history, a war where we were fighting even enemies, on an even plane, a war of death, and brutality.

So who knows what controversy may happen here. However If they go for It, It won't work, I like to think No Russian existed only as a plot point, and was not pre made for the "Oh my god controversy!" factor.

I'm sorry I dragged you into this TL;DR. But I just hope that Black Ops maintains a good campaign, without us taking Johnny Action Man into Bay-Esque situations. And bring back what made 4 great, and If they add tough scenes then they are characterising a mere fraction of the pain from that war.

The "No Russian" level was pretty disgusting.
It was just a cheap shot at controversy.
I felt emotionless while playing it, and hell, I even regret playing it.

Right now, I could less about the SP story. I want to jump into the MP and get the explosive R/C car drive up to someone and blow them up. ...which incedently is also my gamertag. See you all online.
