Blizzard: We're Here If Bungie Needs Us

Blizzard Vice President Rob Pardo says the rumored MMO [http://www.worldofwarcraft.com] project.

Making an MMO, despite what a great many of the world's game company executives seem to think, is not an easy thing. The massively multiplayer landscape is littered with the wreckage of games that by all appearances should have been successful, yet crashed and burned for one reason or another. So it's probably reassuring for Blizzard [http://www.bungie.net].

"It would have to be a very specific proposal," Pardo told Edge Online [http://www.next-gen.biz/news/blizzard-boss-open-to-assisting-a-bungie-mmog]. "Blizzard are very focused on our own stuff and I think one of the reasons that we're successful is because we don't get distracted."

"That said, Activision [http://www.activision.com] is in the family and Bungie is doing stuff for Activision," he continued. "If they called us up and wanted some advice or wanted to have a conversation, absolutely, but I do that with a lot of my game developer friends throughout the industry."

Activision CEO Bobby Kotick said in September that Blizzard's expertise in customer service was a big factor in Bungie's decision to sign with the publisher, but Pardo said the idea of Blizzard handling customer support for a Bungie project was "really far out there," adding, "That's a lot of speculation. It's possible, I guess."

He also expressed confidence in Bungie's ability to come up with a great game despite its inexperience with the genre, pointing out that Blizzard did exactly the same thing with World of Warcraft. "When we first started working on an MMO people right away pointed at our pedigree and said there's no way that Blizzard can make an MMO - they've never tried it before," Pardo said. "So clearly if we can do it, I'm sure a company like Bungie or Nintendo [http://www.valvesoftware.com/] or any of those top tier developers are more than capable of doing it."

"As far as whether I'd welcome a Bungie MMO, I certainly would as a gamer," he added. "I think that's one of the other reasons we've been so successful at Blizzard - all of us play and love games. We're as big a fans as anybody. I would love to play a Bungie MMO. I think it would be cool."

A bungie MMO? News to me... Halo I presume? Hmm that could be pretty cool Covenant vs. Human (Alliance vs. Horde) with the good 'ol WoW style bosses? That would make me a very happy fanboy of both companys :)

"Wake me, when you need me"

Seriously though, I'm interested in seeing what Bungie will do next. Whether its an MMO or not, I hope for many silly easter eggs.

In other words, it'll be really good with very few if any bugs when it's released...which will be approximately 18 years after it's announced.

An economic success | A gaming failure

Please don't encourage them to piss their talent away making games that actively sap the life out of the players.

This should be a mindset of many developers. Yeah, they compete for market share, but the end result is better games and karma points.

Also, I don't think a site called www.nintendoc.om actually exists.

lolz its all about the Benjamins they can careless about a 'Good' game. Just look at their last 4 Halos. If it aint broke, dont fix it is the mentality most of these HUGE companies have now. Which is sad :(

haha.

All Activision/Bizzard wants is a stake in the IP that Bungie owns.

How nice of Blizzard!
On the surface, I'd have to agree with you there. But this kind of co-operation rarley comes about in such highly competitive industries like game development without there being some serious give and take. As a result, I find myself wondering, "What's in it for Blizzard?"

This is a good point. What would Bungie use for the basis of this propoed MMO? I highly doubt that it would be Halo, what with them pretty much wraping up the franchise with Reach and Halo 3.

Also, I'd like to point towards the idea of making it (the proposed MMO) very much like WoW and ask, "Are you KIDDING?!"
Bungie making a MMO that had a Horde/Alliance style faction split and "WoW style bosses" would most likely be SUICIDE!!!!!!

The crew at Extra Credits made this EXACT argument a few weeks ago in their "Future of MMOs [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/extra-credits/1906-The-Future-of-MMOs]" episode about three months ago.

I didn't play all the halo yet, but what is wrong with if it is not broken don't fix it... It isn't broken why fix it?

Actually, Microsoft owns the Halo IP, so if they do make an MMO, it will have nothing to do with Halo. Besides, Bungie themselves said they're tired of Halo and want to do something new, so don't expect anything similar either. I really hope they don't make an MMO, everyone's just better off if they stick to FPS.

and that MS still holds the rights to the IP.
