Damn it Kotick! That actually sounds kinda reasonable, from a buisness standpoint.
Suuuuure, but it doesn't hide the fact that both MW2 and Black Ops have to be installed along with Steam. And as we know, once you use a key on Steam it's all over and the game is yours for all eternity.

I don't get what you meant by that.
PC games can't be trade in, so what does it have to do with this.

I've been itching to get this question off my chest for a while now: why can't people find a way around the used games issue like movies seem to have done with their used DVD market? Or is the movie industry facing the same problem yet being much less vocal about it?
The reason the movie industry has sidestepped the issue is that they have put way more emphasis on theater releases and greatly lengthened the period from theater to DVD. They pretty much assume that any DVD sales they happen to make are just the cherry on their box office gross.
Game retailers and publishers have responded with a similar scheme. Try as hard as you can to sell as many copies on release day to make back your investment from pre-orders and such. Its hurtful to the industry, but its also incredibly lucrative, and we keep buying into it.

Meh, many people buy used art and the original artist never sees a dime. I agree with him.

At the same time, I think if a game is to have supported online, I can kind of understand them wanting to charge $10 to people buying it used, to maybe help support it...I don't even know how that makes sense in my head, as I type it I begin to realize how ridiculous it is. At any rate, if any games were to have this, I'd say online games (which I think is the plan?) and offline games it shouldn't matter because they already made their dime.

So the guy who said he wants to raise game prices, the high prices being the main reason people buy pre-owned games and not pre-owned books music or movies, thinks it's not a problem? Anyone else seeing how when put into context, this is actually more evil than it sounds?

I would agree with him, but here's a funny story: I went shopping yesterday and came across the local game store. You know what the price tag hanging on the Call of Duty games were? 65 euros, each. Regular brand new releases would fall around 50-60 at most.
Its worse in New Zealand (well depends on the exchange rate I guess), it costs NZD$154 at a game store for Black Ops whereas another AAA game cost between $110- 130, hell I got Halo: Reach for a $100 when it came out. Though oddly the PC version of Black Ops is like $90 here.

The difference is that if you install a game via Steam the CD key is tied to your account, unlike non-Steam games which don't tie the key to you. And I didn't know you can't trade in PC games, which makes this sort of irrelevant. :p
You could still sell them on eBay, though.

What's up with Kotick lately, is the whole "I'm Satan, buy my games! NAO!" not working for him?
Well he is still cheap shotting EA but in a way that gamers would agree.
Eh. EA are legitimate targets for taking pot shots at.

You know, I'm a little weirded out. I'm so used to Kotick opening his mouth and hilarious diatribe coming out... and now this.

Is Project 10 Dollar the thing where they give away a slice of DLC for free if you buy it new? What's wrong with that (apart from the silly name)?
It forces the consumer to buy new instead of used if they want the content for free.

It's more risk for the consumer as you can't return DLC (plus buying new is more costly) but you'd have to pay for the DLC if you buy used.

Cost opportunity. :D
Well then you can still buy it later, and probably for cheaper than the full game price anyway; if you're playing the game and they made it they want to see some money from it.

I don't agree with using it to unlock multiplayer in some cases, but I see no problem with it being used on regular DLC pieces.

For ea sportsgames the "free Dlc" is the ability to play online.
Exactly, which could be argued as the main value to the game. Personally, I just play games offline but I don't like the idea of double dipping. I'm already paying to play online: it's called xbox live.

Okay...

The very fact that this is coming from Bob Kotick makes it seem sinister, like he's not telling us everything.

Buu-uut it could simply be a sign that Bob Kotick's taken a media training course, maybe is taking advise from people instead of running his mouth off about "I'm going to take the fun out of making games" and "We're not getting much juice from this gamer, maybe if we squeezed it a little harder".
I imagine the training course was someone grapping him be the shoulder and slapping him saying "This! Is not! How! To give! Your company! A positive! Image!"

That's a step in the right direction regardless of motives. I still feel that he doesn't have a grasp on his own industry. It feels like he's either stumbling through cliffnotes from someone who DOES know what they're talking about or that someone has hollowed out his torso and head and turned him into a sock puppet.

I actually don't mind project ten dollar. And though Kotick makes a few good points, he really haven't done any of the things he mentioned. The DLC for MW2 wasn't that good. But I'm glad he doesn't seem to favor a subscription. But that'll change...
Besides, he can't possibly say he doesn't mind the used games market. That's BS!

Too late Kotick.
Unless you give this entire site a free copy of Black Ops you will not win my approval.

I am utterly covinced that, ensconced deeply within Bobby Kotick's cranium, lies a parasitic space worm who is helpfully trying to make things better for gamers by squeezing the greedy, manipulative part of Kotick's brain to death. Unfortunately, the space worm gets tired easily, and so much of Kotick's brain is greedy and manipulative... hence the brief moments of almost-humanity before the poor worm needs to take a break and the "old" Bobby Kotick returns.
Yeah... That sounds about right. It's like... Why doesn't he do this more often?
