Bobby Kotick Says California Law is "Beyond Absurd"

Maybe what we're not seeing is that there are two Koticks. One that is cartoonishly and definitively evil, and the other that's basically Batman; a heroic soul that risks everything to protect us.

That's the only way that any of this makes sense. To me, at least... :p

Off-topic I guess but does anyone else still think "Schwarzenegger v. EMA" sounds like the title of a new action film? :p
On a related note, one of the worst parts of this debate is how it's ruining my enjoyment of Arnie's old movies by making me dislike him. Anyone else running into this problem or do you just not relate Arnold the actor with Arnold the Governator?

Bobby Kotick, the devil of the videogame industry, is our best hope for defeating this law.

I...feel confused and angry.
If we are lucky, they may destroy each other!

Finally. Now hopefully the two of them will go at each other until there's nothing left.

Perhaps in a children's card game?
That almost got me some funny looks from the riotous bout of laughter I was just barely able to contain. I'm now picturing Kotick saying "Screw the rules, I've got money!", whee!

Is it not bad for the people who play those games? Yes, people do, otherwise they wouldn't continue making them. How is it fair for you to say "yes, I know better than you, these games are bad and you shouldn't be playing them!"

And you people say Kotick is arrogant.
Well, considering these series subsist entirely upon repackaging the innovative features of other games in a less compelling fashion, thats a somewhat moot point. People buy those series because they don't know any better, the publishers don't tell them any better, and the developers are just in it for a quick buck.

Just because people buy something doesn't mean its worth selling. Especially when most sales go to a captive audience.

While I know that Bobby Kotick has been saying a lot of stupid shit for...well, a long time, I do find it amusing that very few people here are actually happy that he's supporting the fight against the California game law.

Ah, how hate blinds us...
You don't know if people are happy or not.

I think we can all agree the more support against the law in California, the better. Unless he says really stupid shit to change peoples minds for the law, but I doubt he would be that dumb.
The fact hes weighing in at all undermines his attempts to help, as most (if not all) of activision's money comes from games the law would ban. So just by opening his mouth, he hurts at least as much as he helps.

Looks like SimuLord was right. Bobby Kotick may indeed be our last, best hope.

The enemy of my enemy is my friend has never rang more true. I guess now the idiotic politicians are going to feel what it's like to have Satan as an enemy in court. Let's not forget that Critical Miss episode where Kotick took some poor soul to court and demanded he be compensated with unicorns.

Pink unicorns.

Honestly, with the amount of money, power and influence behind the opposition, did California really think they were going to get away with this?
He maybe the enemy of my enemy, but that still doesn't make an excuse for his evils. He's still an enemy and is not a friend. If an Indie developer came in and weighed in on this law, or some developer who's not making one of the most violent game series each and every year, then it would make more since and show true reasoning.

Kotick's objective is one about greed where he's wanting to oppose the bill so that it doesn't effect the sales of his games and his profits. That's it, nothing more, clear as the day is long. Just look at many of his recently announcemented ideas, all of which revolved around some way to "profit of the fanbase" off of some of Activisions products: charging for multiplayer in many games that currently don't charge extra for it, take a bunch of in-game cutscenes and sell them back to player for $30 in a short video an hour long, and more.

Greedy bastards will go against any political dissension that could effect their profits. I'm just wondering when Kotic will take it up a notch and start bribing the Senators just like the oil, energy, and other CEO's do. I wouldn't put it past him, but then again that does require him to spend money so...

Any Developer opposes this law because it means it will stifle their audience.

If you actually believe that indie devs don't want a bucket full of cash you're kidding yourselves.

I'm really getting annoyed with this Kotick crap, he's a businessman that says stupid crap, big whoop.

"The enemy of my enemy is my friend." ...for the time being anyway.
You're still a greedy two-faced dick, Kotick, but as long as your fighting this stupid law, you're a friend of mine.

You know even though the guy gets a lot of hate(justly in most cases), you have to admit the dudes got style.

I have to admire his single minded devotion to getting profits for the company that employs him. He may not know much about video games but he knows how to make money off them.

Oh noes! Mr. Business Man wants to make profit? Stop the fucking presses! HOLY SHIT. You're telling me every single damn business isn't out there looking to make a profit?

Are you freaking kidding me?

All of you people bitching and whining that Kotick makes unpopular decisions and announcements don't seem to realise that he's thinking with an economical mind. He wants to make money and you shouldn't ***** about that when you live in a country based on free enterprise.

You all whine like it's some big shocker that Kotick is only out to protect his business interests and that corporations like Nintendo don't go out of their way to sit on a big pile of money as well just because they hide behind cute cartoon characters and childhood memories.

The whole reason the industry is successful is because people only in it for the money and run companies as a business are in control. If you had nothing but 'indie' developers and companies 'only in it for the love of making games' the whole industry would have fallen flat on its face by now and you need to realise it. When you don't make unpopular decisions and ruthless choices in the business world, it's called having your head in the clouds.

One good deed is not enough for all the evil doings he has done. Besides that, he only says that because he would get less money. If it wouldn't affect the sales of Activision he couldn't care less.
