Are theese people even worth paying attention to anymore?

GotY awards are supposed to be about game quality, not about sales numbers.

No, no it isn't. I thought I'd point it out before someone angrier about that sort of thing points it out with lots more swearing. Although we do love Fifa here too (not me though, can't play it for shit)

For some reason whenever games and Bookies are in the same story, Paddy Power always seems to be involved too. Is it just them who like game related betting or do other bookmakers do similar offers?
It will sell like hotcakes though. No doubt about that... But there won't be a copy in my house, I can't stand bland games like that.

People complaining about BUT IT'S NOT A GOOD GAME!!!111!!1 are just wrong.
Taste in video-games differs from person to person, whereas sales figuires are pure fact.
(genuine curiosity) Are you arguing that popularity = quality?

I love CoD, but the GoTY for me is Portal 2, it feels slightly forgotten by people because it came out way back in April.

I hate how the article is implying that because the game sold the most copies, that it's the best game of the year.

The quality of a game based off of sales figures will never be fully accurate. Sometimes it may be truthful, but at other times you;ll have games like the recent Call of Duty games, which though they may sell very well, aren't exactly the "best games" out there.

Because the Orange Box on console isn't very good.
Is there a difference in software? Does it get updated more frequently or something? Help me out here. After a quick search I've found that the PS3 version is consistently reviewed inferior to the other two (I don't know y) but the 360 and pc versions seem to match up perfectly.

No, put your pitchfork down.
I am saying that you cannot bet on GOTY off of quality, because 'quality' depends on the person playing it.
Somebody may think it's the worst game in the world, others might think it's the best.

They're doing sales because you can have a definite figure on that.

Game of the year, no.
Game of the week, yes.
But Skyrim is out Friday.....
Half week then :p

But in all seriousness, as good as skyrim can be, it wont get as much limelight due to the sad fact it wont make as much money as cod.

While not a bad game COD is like Madden. Skyrim is something new and unique that looks far more polished.
*snigger* Good one.

OT: Sales hardly constitute GOTY, I thought the general consensus was that the game with the most "Game of the Year" awards from magazines and review sites gets that title (although, to be fair, all those over-excitable twats will probably come to the same conclusion anyway). I'm not particularly surprised Paddy Power's holding a bet on this though, they pretty much hold bets on everything.

Elitism, away! But, now seriously, in what way isn't Angry Birds a video game? Do you have a legitimate argument to support this assertion, or is it simply because you don't care for it's genre/ market?

This is why i dislike COD, it uses the same formulae each and every time (the last good/original one was COD 4 in my opinion) and each time only add one or two new aspects. Then they sweep the awards ceremony over hard polished games like skyrim or deus ex HR just because every stupid comsumer and their cat bought a copy
RIDICULOUS
I don't remember where but one review site scored MW3's story higher than DE:HR's. I about had a stroke.

This looks like something I'd read in LoL.

Either trolling for the fun of it, or just trolling. Hard to tell...

But for the sake of an actual reply, irritation != bitterness.

Well as has been said by a lot of people you cannot make judgements on GOTY based on sales numbers. You can bet on what game will be the best selling of the year and in that case it is safe to say that MW3 will probably crush all others (with the possible exception of Battlefield 3). Skyrim and Saints Row 3 will not be able to keep up. They will probably get impressive figures in their own right but I don't think they will come close. Sales are easy(ish) to measure and thus easy for bookies to use as measuring sticks. The problem of course is that if a bookie is setting odds on GOTY based on sales numbers I wager they will be in for a nasty surprise. As said before, have yet to see Skyrim and Saints Row 3 this year and the rest of the year has presented some pretty impressive games as well. Portal 2, The Witcher 2 and Deus Ex: Human Revolution, not to mention the indi masterpiece Bastion, are all of this year. In this company MW3 and Battlefield 3 just don't stand up when it comes to quality.

On another note the term GOTY is so silly as it doesn't really have much value without saying who would make the determination. Every gaming site, magazine and publication have their own GOTY (as is also the case other products) and it is always conveniently left out when presented on game boxes and in advertisement.

That's all fine to me, as long as there's a disclaimer that makes it clear that Game of the Year = Best Selling Game of the Year. Convention will lead us to believe that Game of the Year means "the game that will still be worth playing next year...........after November of next year."

It's new to me that the goty is decided by the sales. Of course I tend to forget that money is all that counts. Silly me, thinking that it takes more than money to call a game, goty. It's not like most just blindly buy it because everyone else does it and it's just famous.
Alright, I've played it and it's not bad, it's fun for two or three months but that's all I can say about it that I haven't said already about COD4.

People bet on this stuff? Wow.

I'm having fun with Modern Warfare 3. I loved that they brought back two characters--and no, I don't mean the two everyone is thinking of. Unless Skyrim completely and utterly blows my mind, I think this might be my Game of the Year. Portal 2 could have been if they had just linked something, anything, to the next Half-Life game.

The PS3 version was (poorly) ported by a third party, and it has performance issues, which explains why it's rated so low. As for the difference between the console and PC versions, there's a couple of things going. For one thing, the mouse and keyboard really does make a big difference, especially to Portal; it's just painful to watch someone play that with a controller. More importantly, though, the console versions never got any of the free DLC that the PC version got, and they never got it packaged up as paid DLC, either. The console versions were pretty much abandoned right after launch.

OT: I sincerely hope that MW3 isn't the highest selling game of the year, if for no other reason than that I've heard even major CoD fans complaining abut how stale the series is getting. I don't know why Activision thought that yearly releases of FPS's was a good thing in the first place; it's not like sports games. A halfway decent FPS should last online for at least 5 years. A really good one should last 10+ years, whether sequels have been released or not, and at least two years should be given between releases of one game and its sequel. With Activision not following this pattern, they're flooding the market with new copies of a nearly identical game, which is leading people to get bored of it. The same thing happened with Guitar Hero -- and the videogame crash of 1983, which Activision was most definitely a huge factor in.

Interesting... only 5.5 million in the first day? That's 100,000 units below their Day 1 sales for Black Ops... must mean that people are realizing COD is becoming recycled garbage after the fourth nearly identical iteration.

Uninspired with self-perpetuating popularity.

Seriously, the sales figures make me feel like barfing.....you think I'm exaggerating but I'm not.

Y don't all of these people go pick up the Orange Box instead?
Because they enjoy a different game from you.

As unimaginably silly as that must seem to you. Not everyone wants the same thing.

OT: I don't really see how this is news to anyone. I could quite happily of put my house on the fact that this game is going to sell more than any other game in history. And of course GOTY is going to be influenced by that.
Not everyone wants the same thing....lol....except when it comes to CoD apparently.

But seriously, most people have no idea what they want when it comes to entertainment or art and to argue otherwise is foolish. My favorite game ever could be a some obscure GameGear title that I may never hear about in my life, and let me tell you, I would LOOOOOOVE it if somebody saved me 50$ by handing it to me and saying "play this instead."

Disclaimer: The upcoming paragraph is full of generalizations about the CoD player base. These generalizations do not apply to anybody on this site which, I assume, is populated by knowledgeable and experienced gamers who are familiar with their tastes.

The vast majority of people who picked up MW3 have purchased at least one CoD before and there are thousands of them who haven't played a dozen different video games in their life. These people have tunnel vision. They wouldn't know experimentation, variety, or research if it came up and bit them in the ass. They don't know what they want because they've never played what they want, and they've never played what they want because they're too busy playing CoD while watching CoD commercials that come up during breaks in the evening news which happens to feature a story about CoD.

I don't think that anybody here would argue that popularity automatically equals quality. If you think so, then you would have to accept that CoD is by far the greatest game and series of all time.

I doubt you truly believe that the millions of people who purchased MW3 on day one did so because there is no other game in existence that they would enjoy more. I don't even think the people buying it have that opinion. I think that the reason people are buying it is because of the sales themselves; because that's what all of their friends are going to be playing.
