No, they're not "pretty damn close". They're completely different. I asked what relevance BSA have to modern life, at worst implying that they do no harm but provide no great benefit. "Better off without," would mean that I believe they do more harm than good and that we should get rid of them- an opinion I never expressed. An opinion you made up.

Face it, you saw someone saying something mildly negative (or rather not positive) about BSA and you jumped to wild conclusions in order to defend your tribe. The graceful thing to do at this point would be for you to apologize and drop it so we can both move on to more important things.
You definitely implied that the Boy Scouts are not very important. Vuliev clearly does not agree with you and made some good points.

Huh. That Youtube clip is...surprisingly appropriate.

Anyway, yeah: Good for them, I suppose.

Be the Chang you want to see in the world.

Sorry had to be done.

OT - This is excellent news, but it should not have taken this long. Seriously.

About fucking time... I really don't understand why people hate homosexuals.
That's not quite what it is all about.

Vuliev summed everything up nicely, Katatori-kun is living on the edge right now and working hard on getting the boot. I find the boy scouts and girl scouts to be quite important, and I myself experienced them to be rather all-inclusive, complete with singing merry negro spirituals and jewish songs.

However, sex was never an issue until that one guide that was a bit too close and a bit too naked most of the time. We didn't know what was going on, but after we opened up to our parents, he was soon gone. I wonder why? He was the only guide we saw naked, and he was pretty much the first adult I've seen naked apart from my parents. I know I did not mind my parents being naked, but him... I did mind, yes.

It's not about sex, and there is nothing to deconstruct or patch together in a haphazard gender-politics way. I do not hate homosexuals, how could I possibly. But I maintain the position that any 'sex' has no place in the boy scouts. Apart from wanking in unison, maybe, but that's an activity peers can participate in if so inclined, guides and adults excluded.

You know what I've realised?

Chang would make a fantastic scout leader.

I mean, look at all the badges he has.

And then there's the sage-like advice he could give out to everyone.

And finally, he's also experienced in warning others about the dangers of drugs.

So let's have some Chang we can believe in. Señor Chang for President 2013! Scout Leader.

So gays can now join he scouts, as long as they believe, all they need to do now is accept kids that do not profess a particular faith and they can finally be an all accepting group. A true benetton ad of unity.

So next will they allow women to join? And maybe the girl scouts will accept male members. It's a private club, can't they decide who can and can't join?
When I was in the scouts we had three girls in our patrol. Camps were great fun.

Better (very, very) late than never. I'm glad for everyone involved.

This reminds me of that issue with the gay gamer conventions. They could've just started their own Scouts-like organization that was accepting, or even exclusive to, LGBT, but they chose not to, because ignoring the problem won't fix it, and would only make it worse.

You never had a crush as a kid?

Also, it pertains to the adult instructors. You couldn't be a gay BSA Scout Leader.

Is Scouting for every young man? No. I've seen that firsthand--during my time in Scouting, my troop had a number of guys drop out because it simply wasn't doing anything for them.
I was in Cubs as a kid, the junior version of the Scouts, and I - like many others - left because of the bullying and violence.

What you're touting as leadership experience seems to translate for many young men as power over those weaker. Whenever there was some crossover exercise with the older and larger Scouts, they'd beat the crap out of us. Now I'm not saying that this is the case for everyone, but certainly everyone I know who has joined the organisation at the various age brackets has experienced harassment and some degree of violence. They (and I) left not because it was doing nothing for us but because it was a fucking miserable experience. Giving the average teenage boy power over smaller children is just begging for trouble.

Weird. I always thought that all boy scouts were gay.
Now, I don't know if all boy scouts are gay, 'cos they can probably tie the knot in like 50 different ways.

So with gay people joining, will the be changing the uniform?

But in all seriousness, I am surprised that gay people weren't already in the BSA.
Technically they were. But it was a very very strict version of "don't ask, don't tell". And if their sexuallity went public in any way it was out for them. But now is all sunshire and rainbows for everyone.

/skips thread
/well, apart from the last two posts on page one

1. About time. After all, the founder was and many of the adult supervisors are (or at least were, when I was in and eventually decided to quit scouts) horrendous paedos and/or in a position to bring back copious souvenirs from Narnia, so why have one rule for them and another for the kids?
And really, when it's so much of a sausagefest in many situations, what exactly did they expect?

2. There have always been female supervisors/leaders in scouts as far as I'm aware, and they did start admitting girls in the late 90s as far as I'm aware. It was just never a popular choice (in terms of not many girls/women bothered with it; the actual scouts didn't seem too bothered either way, as it never really felt like a "boys' club" just a kids club that happened to be a bit short on female company)

3. The same people will sell "you" (I presume the question asker is American) mint cookies when all the girls join the scouts as sell the rest of the world mint cookies: the supermarket.
Srsly door to door cookie sales just aren't a thing anywhere else. Not enough of a trust relationship for a start, and in any case we expect our local charitably-minded kids club bake sale to involve things they've actually made themselves, rather than pre-packaged in a factory as GSC's appear to be nowadays.
