It's good fun with friends, so i'm glad the PSN is back up.
As for the TF2 reference, get over it, this is more like Borderlands crossed with Mirror's Edge.
Which i both loved, so maybe i'm a bit biased.
I just "dig" the visuals, the style, overall feel, the vibrant colours etc, etc.

I dont know... i really do like the visuals. Like, a lot. I think its fairly daring and new-ish without being TOO absurd (part of why i didnt like TF2). Also, the level of customisation really appeals to me. I'm one of those people who just LOVES to tweak and perfect their avatar. Seriously. I spend about 15-30 mins each time i turn something like Halo on, just doing and redoing my little avatar person. And this looks like it would be an absolute killer for that, which is good.

But its just... i dunno. Its just hear so much against it that i don't know what to think.

So, does it get a reccomendation from the community here?

....where are all the women? How are they breeding in this sky city?

It looks fun, but that HUD is cluttered as hell. I like the pace, though. Might give it a go once the price drops a bit.

I was going to make some comment along the lines of "Maybe the controls weren't great because you were playing on XBox", until you mentioned Sometimes My Ass Runs Thoughtlessly. And I Loled, hard. Props to you sir on your acronyming skills.

Not even the forums mention Mirror's edge, did you all forget it existed. I feel so betrayed.

Not too much since in the same map you can have many different scenarios. There's a high fiero factor since you can complete objectives in the last few seconds and then the defenders suddenly yell in outroar as you move to the next objective/bit of the map and time gets added.Sometimes you don't even see the next bit, sometimes you instantly move there and miss the first bit of the map altogether.

I really like the aesthetics in Brink for the same reasons I like the aesthetics in Borderlands. They could have just made them plain and boring but instead really went for something different. Just like how Gears has a SUPER realism aesthetic, so much so it stops being real, if that makes sense. To bad all those bloody menus get in the way.

TL;DR:
If you want to play an objective based game, if you want to lay mine fields and build turret nests, or if you want to slide tackle and pwn them with a silenced shotgun, then Brink is your game.

If you're too impatient to learn how to play it, or if you don't like stylized graphics, or if you don't like objective based team play, then you should pass I guess.

My best advice is to ignore the reviewers and just watch the gamplay. If it looks like fun to you, then give it a shot.

That was my strategy at least.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I was on the fence for a while, and a combination of this review as well as a the opinions of a few people at Machinima Respawn [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJEYXGy0Uco&list=SL] convinced me to buy it.

I'm 10 hours in and having a blast.

Single player is lacking a bit. I tried playing through the whole campaign single player, but I wound up getting stuck on the mission Ship Yard because of the AI issues people have been mentioning.

The AI is a little annoying in the fact that your friendly AI prioritizes all of the secondary objectives above the primary main objective, to the point where losing control of a secondary objective will cause allied AI teammates to leave the primary objective, even if it's half complete.

The other issue with single player is it is the multiplayer. The only difference between single player and multiplayer is how many humans are attempting the mission.

That said I really love the class system, I really love the SMART movement system, I really love slide tackling people with my shot gun and then running away with my light character, and being a mobile machine gun nest with my heavy engineer.

As far as the SMART movement system being "unintuitive" or "glitchy" if you play for a little while you recognize which sorts of objects you can climb, and which you can't.

As far as the interface being confusing, I think it's because the game dumps it all on you at once. There is a "tutorial" in the form of "challenges" that you need to complete to unlock weapon attachments, but the challenges don't really say, "Hold Shift to use SMART, press Mouse 3 to pull up the objective wheel." Or even, "This is a command center, this is what it does, this is why they are important to capture for your teammates."

Once you have a base familiarity with the game, either by completing the challenges or looking through the control list and then fiddling around, I don't think it's that complicated. There's just an initial barrier to entry that's slightly steeper than the one for say, COD or Halo. And honestly, that should be expected, considering that the game features a unique movement system, a class system where every class has unique abilities, and an objective system, whereas COD or Halo do not.

Finally, I really like the character customization aspect of the game. You create characters who level up and unlock points, and you unlock outfits and weapons for all of your characters as you play. I was really thrilled when my Engineer looked precisely like Mike Tyson.

Yeah that's one thing I noticed too: I guess they figure women aren't fighting on the front line? The game is narrated by a woman, so once can assume there are women on the Arc. Playing as a female character might have been nice. Especially a really heavy female character... :O

The HUD is only cluttered when you don't know what all the information is.

I don't think it's "cluttered" in the sense that thing that there are things which don't need to be there in your way. I would say that the information on the HUD is informative and necessary, and the HUD has never gotten in the way of me actually shooting someone in the face or repairing something.

Not terrible.

First of all, if you play as security or as the resistance, you have to complete the opposite objectives. So that adds some re-playability. Defending a door from getting blown up is an entirely different objective than blowing up the same door.

Second of all, there are multiple paths or strategies for completing the objectives, so you can try different things each time you play a map.

Third of all, the four classes wind up playing differently. As an Engineer, I spent 99% of my time hovering 4 feet from an objective building turrets or laying mines. As a medic, I spent 0% of my time defending objectives and spent all of my time running at a frenzied pace between downed teammates.

Fourth, I feel like even when there are more maps, people generally play on the same ones over and over anyway. In Counter Strike, everyone always played on Dust, Dust2, Office, Inferno, Italy, etc. If there are many more than 8 maps in the COD or Half Life rotation, I strongly suspect that people gravity towards playing the same number of maps over and over, and that number is probably less than 8.

In the end though, if only seeing the same 8 maps, at least until there is some form of DLC, is going to break the experience for you, then nothing can be said to that.

Perhaps not in this thread, but I've seen Mirror's Edge brought up frequently when discussing Brink. Even the Splash Damage developers have mentioned it several times.

Female characters were considered at the beginning, and they took the concept far enough to work out how they were going to handle sizes and hitboxes. However they were eventually cut so they could focus all of their animation, voice acting, and art resources. If they had to split all of that between two genders we wouldn't be seeing nearly so many individual character options.

My issue with Brink is the AI (I can't play online). Around level 10, the enemy AI becomes much better than the friendly AI -- who you can't give direction to, and is therefore impossible to work with as a team. I end up having to lone-wolf stuff -- particular tasks that require a specific class -- and that's really not how Brink is meant to be played.
The AI was fixed like yesterday or so. I had the exact same problems as you where my team ignored my doing the primary objective and ran around like idiots.

Fired the game up yesterday and they actually escort/cover you during objectives. Massive improvement over before since I can actually finish the campaigns now.

Did you like Left For Dead maps? Because it's kind of like that. Except less linear and more objective based. If that makes any sense at all...

So, I'm swaying from totally not interested to potential gem with each piece of information I receive on this game. I definitely think I'll be giving the demo a go when PSN is back up. Which is a step up from ignoring.

I don't like Team Fortress 2 so still unsure if this is gameplay I can really enjoy. More of an Unreal tournament guy - which of course was ruined with a load of 'protect the node' levels.

I think im going to pass on FPS's for a while... until TIMESPLITTERS 4 COMES OUT.

Come on, give the games what they want instead of guessing what we want.
eh, eh, eh - is Timesplitters 4 back on..? I've signed a load of on line petitions, is this still a pipe dream?

Fair enough... I guess I'm not complaining at all! I really like the character customization.

I don't know, both faction have lots of objecties which are basically prevent the other team from putting a breaching charge on this door for 10 minutes, or prevent the enemy spies from hacking your terminal for 10 minutes.

I haven't played TF2 enough to compare the games. I know that they're similar in terms of the fact that they have classes and stuff, but I don't know how the pacing of the games compares.

Heh, they DO look like the puppets from Land of Confusion.

Now they need to make one that looks like Peter Gabriel's claymation videos.

I'm definitely wanting to look into the multiplayer (if just for experimentation) with this sort of set up, even if initially I was hoping for a really strong single player experience that fully utilized the SMART system (the trailer was AWESOME, parkour parkour).

If I were looking for a multiplayer class based shooter, I would buy TF2 for $10 on Steam, rather than get an inferior game of the same type for $40

(I wanted to make a "Hardcore Parkour" joke, but I thought my comment was too negative.)

Still deciding whether or not to buy this game. I was really looking forward to it but don't know if I want to drop 50-60 bucks on it right now.
Why not rent it? (if you can)

Well, while there is almost no storyline whatsoever (which is a real shame because a place like the Ark would hold lots of interesting tales) there are audio logs to get more of a personal story if you're into that. The gameplay is good. The only thing that personaly pissed me off was waiting for those damn medics when I'm right at the objective, but then I bought the medics self-revive move and everything was fine. If you want a good type of gun for the game a smg would be a reasonable choice. A good balance of power and ammo. I found the Operative to be fun to play (hacking turrets to trick enemies and spotting mines and such). Even though no class is most important, you can choose a prefered class to play as at the beginning of a match. Brink had a lot of potential, but the developers didn't really work towards it. It's a GOOD game, all those other drawbacks keep it from being GREAT. I'm still playing it though.
