Previous national and local campaigns have focussed on women and the risk they put themselves under through alcohol consumption. The emphasis has been on them taking steps to protect themselves. Rather than place the onus on women, we've taken the unique approach of focusing on young men. We want potential offenders to consider their actions, while also raising awareness of acquaintance rape so that women can keep themselves safe.

well, I'm certainly glad to see that the British police are putting all of their efforts into enforcing the stereotype that only women are capable of being rape victims and that men can most certainly not be sexually assaulted by women. [/sarcasm]
This is basically my thought. Wonder if they even considered gay/lesbian rapes when making it?
Actually, I doubt they did, because that certainly never happens; only heterosexual rapes by men of women ever happen /sarcasm

I hate over-the-top political correctness in all it's forms, and this is one of the worst examples- I wouldn't be surprised if the game also called women "wymmyn" (or "wommon" for singular)...

The idea is certainly a noble one, don't get me wrong, but they will handle it all wrong and it'll flop.

It's nice that they're making an effort... but honestly, would the people who intend to rape people be online playing games teaching them not to rape people? ... probably not.
I think it's more to raise awareness early on. Using this to stop actual rapists would be like putting a "Watch Your Step" sign halfway down a cliff for falling people to see.

I think it might raise awareness, if nothing else. Being a game, people won't see it as "just another campaign". Hopefully.

The campaign seems to be telling men that rape is bad, even if it's just finding a drunk passed out person and fucking them, still bad.

That should cover most cases except women raping men and women raping other women (has that ever happened?).

Women raping men does happen but I believe it occurs much less often. To be honest if a guy is out clubbing and gets paralytically drunk and wakes up the next day to find that a female friend of his has shagged him, he's unlikely to be massively upset about it, at least IMHO.

Sounds like a noble cause.

Maybe someone should point Micheal Atkinson and Jack Thompson to that game, might get them to treat games like movies are treated by people and leave the industry alone.
Nah, they'd just say that gamers are so insane and detached from reality that they need to be shown NOT to rape using a game or they'd be out savaging children in the streets.

I don't know, I don't want to play an anti-rape game unless there's an extra-difficult mode called "Tentacle Monster".

Who even 'plays' those government campaign games anyway? Are they just going to get a room full of possible rapists and go "Play this."?
I just did. It's not as you'd expect, actually.

Not so. The campaign did actually just teach me something:

Consent is when a person agrees to have sex and has the freedom and ability to make that decision. Knowing someone, being drunk or on drugs or having been intimate with them before is not an excuse or consent."
The bold part makes it really, really easy to rape anyone. Even a guy.

This is nice and all, but men already know they need consent. They can be quite good at finding 'excuses', however.

So if my girlfriend gets drunk, comes onto me and I have sex with her, I've just raped her?

huuh...interesting definition.

EDIT: also I love the formatting job you made of quoting me when you were aiming at two guys on the other side of the room. :)

It's ridiculous. A mate of mine carries little "I agree to have sex with you" contracts he gets women to sign before he does the deed. He's now going to need to provide from the woman a blood sample and psych evaluation to protect himself from rape charges.

Apparently so. If she is so drunk she can't walk straight, it'd probably be rape.

I wouldn't question the validity. It's from the police site.

It's an amiable goal and they're using an interesting new approach. In addition to the speaking campaign and testimony from convicted rapists it seems like they have a comprehensive and well thought out campaign. If I had to take a stab at what the game will be like, it'll probably resemble this legal game I played once where you're taken through a situation in dialogs and you mass effect your way to success or failure via stringent standards of conduct.

That being said, when I heard there was a British anti-rape game coming out I assumed we'd wander around the streets of London, GTA style beating up rapists until one of them shouted "This is what you like, huh ? This is what gets you hot..." at which point a game over screen would appear.

Rape awareness?

Is anyone NOT aware that rape occurs? Though I did play this game and it has made me decide not to rape anyone tonight, so I must say it is effective.

Do you have evidence to prove it won't work?
Circumstantial, but yes.

There are three main reasons for committing bodily crime against others:

1) Passion
2) Revenge
3) Sociopathy

Empassioned individuals act against their nature, so the campaign won't work.
Revenge driven individuals accept the consequences of their actions already, so that won't work.
Sociopathic criminals don't care even if they are caught.

If you are in a situation that rape could occur, there is no mandate higher than your own conscience to prevent you from doing it, so any mandate that tries is doomed to failure.

The one (and there is only one) way you can prevent such crimes happening is to inform the potential victim of ways to defend themselves. No action against the offender will work for the three reasons listed above.

(Obviously that applies to all four potential gender attacks)

The problem being is that either party can decide to act as the victim at a later date - which is where the problems of the moment come from. And that's what the "game" promotes - the ability to change your mind on whether it was consensual, and that's why it's dangerous.

Especially to those who have been legitimately attacked, because it weakens their defence in court.

I think the effort here is more to make men aware of just where the legal boundaries of rape lie. Many men probably think of rape as the stereotypical "stranger in an alley with a knife" situation, but in many places, the law considers "consensual sex" as only occuring with the express, unimpaired and continuous consent of the woman (if she asks you to stop at any point and you keep going, you're considered by the law to be raping her).

As with many other things, intoxicants (including alcohol) seriously muddy the lines, which is why I don't touch them, or anyone who has.

Hell, if they made having sex with drunk people rape, maybe it'd cut down on the level of binge drinking, as it seems a fair number of them only go to clubs to get hammered then have pointless rutting up against a wall in a toilet anyways.

I'd say that if she's holding a kebab, she's already proved that she can't make a reasoned decision, and you should walk away.

EDIT: I should also congratulate whoever thought this up as being clued up enough to realise that games can and should embrace all subjects, and 'game' doesn't necessarily mean 'fun'.

That's not a dig at games, I wouldn't say Amnesia was 'fun', tho it was utterly captivating. You can be interesting, thoughtprovoking and artistic without being 'fun' and still be a piece of interactive entertainment.

I for one am pleased they're not just slapping a slogan on a billboard and hoping.

Also as said above, too many men think a stranger raping a woman at knifepoint is the only kind of rape, when in fact sex with a drunk woman who can't manage to say 'no' clearly or really fight you off is, and if she changes her mind just before you stick it in, or even hlfway thru, and you don't stop, that's rape too.

Sometimes finishing yourself off in the bathroom is better than a jail sentence and knowing you've messed up a girl who got too drunk to know what she was doing.

I do still maintain it's partly up to women to make sure they're at least of the level where they can clearly say no, however, surely that's not too sexist of me?

Wait, what? Is it about getting someone to sleep with you willingly? Is it a game where you snipe rapists? I don't understand.
Maybe you castrate all the rapists.....or something

No means NO!!! And if shes drunk and says "YES", I'd play my cards right and make it a YES No....! Especially if its a one night stand! Because when she /he wakes up and doesn't remember saying "yes" you become the RAPIST!

I've gone all out on the html on this!! Enjoy!

Prevention is better than cure! Anyone who is 100% guilty of rape and admits to it is immediately castrated or beheaded! Their choice!

I can think of a better way to teach awareness of rape, ADS! That would be much more effective (I think! Prove me wrong) than a game as I'm thinking of an interactive point and click which involves going around 'researching' and learning about rape which to be honest wouldn't be fun but nevertheless, enlightening to some.
