Bungie Bids a Silly and Fond Farewell to Halo 2

Whilst I was never an Xbox owner, I was a vicious opponent in that console war. Sad now, that the greatest triumph of the console, the ONLY one that truly let it become a major player, is to be ceased. Even I will admit that Xbox Live put gaming where it is today.

We'll tell your tale to those who ask. We'll tell it truly, the ill-deeds along with the good, and let you be judged accordingly.

The rest is silence.

Never had an Xbox and never played Halo (any of them).

Nevertheless, I recognise the importance of Halo 2 in the development on online console gaming.

I salute your passing, good sir.

It had a good run - I think everyone involved can be very proud of how well it did. I'd say the only thing comparable to Halo 2's multi-player success would be Counterstrike.

Also, I thought the teabagging message was pretty funny.

It's actually for technical reasons - there's no way to upgrade Xbox Live in certain ways and keep compatibility with the original games. For example, the 100-person friends list limit. They can't increase that without breaking all those old games anyway. Sure, you can say it was a bad design, but how can you plan for "forever" when you're building something that has never been done before?

So there we have it, the longest you can possibly play a console game online is five and a half years.

Credit to Bungie for keeping it working, but it's a crying shame when a peer to peer multiplayer game is killed for arbitrary reasons. In fact it's worse than a shame, it's pathetic, communities should decide when they want to stop playing a game, not some bloody marketing executive.

How can you put a positive spin on this? Older games are still being played online. Pulling the plug on a mostly peer to peer online system is nothing but tight-assed penny pinching.

If anything, this is little more than a cynical attempt to sell some more copies of halo 3.

They aren't pulling the plug on Halo 2, they're shutting down the original Xbox Live for technical reasons.

Never played Halo 2 at all. Kinda cool they bothered to do this with a 6 year old game, even if it was as simple as changing a bunch of text.
Aye, its nice to see them care for such an old game.

here hopes it all goes well, and, goodbye fair service!

This is a fucking travesty, and I'm not a Halo player.

Hey, look. There are some 70-100 servers available for Half-Life 1 Deathmatch. And that doesn't even count mods.

When was Half-Life released? It was sometime before 2004. 2001? No...actually, 1998.

I have seen UNsuccessful games get longer support than that.

I never played the online portion of Halo 2, but the multiplayer on Coagulation was some of the most fun I've ever had. FOR SCIENCE!

And that is why I love Bungie. They know how to have a good time.

I'm gonna play it soon, and its going to be great.

I don't care what people say about Halo 2 paving the way for online console gaming. It'd been happening much more successfully on PCs for years and years. And it was inevitable that this generation of consoles would be highly focused on online connectivity. Playstation 2 had it's PSN, Xbox had Live. The only difference between Xbox and the Dreamcast is that the Dreamcast was a little too early to the game while the Xbox came in at the perfect time.

Therefore, no props to Halo 2. I'm surprised people could mindlessly play it for that long without any real mod support.

Two games (well, one game and one 'expansion pack') later and they still have a community to support it. Pretty interesting, especially for a console game.

Were I the developers, I'd have made one saying: "Remember the campaign mode for this game? Yeah, neither do we."
More like: "Remember the campaign mode? It's the one with the cliffhanger ending that made millions of people around the world shout WTF at the exact same time." :p

I saw these last night. One of my favorites:
You know what would make this game more awesome? Jetpacks!
There are a couple more Reach-related jokes in there (one about BUNGLE PRO signups starting on May 3rd).

Halo 2 helped introduce me to a certain online community (GeezerGamers.com [http://www.geezergamers.com], a community of adult gamers that prefer to play, enjoy the game, and respect our fellow gamer without 12-year-olds insulting our mothers). And with a community of people to play with and a decent game to play on, a game that made it easy to play together (to this day, we still wish games would "just copy Halo 2's lobby" for multiplayer), not to mention fun (even if they were basic by current standards, the customizable settings made for some really fun and creative game types), it really set the stage for the way I've been playing games for the past nearly five years.

As much as I'm looking forward to whatever features are so big and important that they'd do such a drastic move as this in order to implement them, and even though before this week it had been almost two years since I'd played Halo 2 (my Bungie.net stats show my last played game was August of '08), this still makes me sad.

Does this mean we will get an influx of good players to Halo 3?
