Sony have always had cool, ground-breaking ads imo. They've always emphasised design & image over straightforward factual information (an especially brave move in the 90s when games consoles were still considered toys). This new ad is quite funny, and it'll probably generate a few extra sales, but it's nothing compared to the likes of Mental Wealth, Double Life or the exploding Rubik's cube. They might seem pretentious or ridiculous to some people but I think they're appreciated by the majority of potential consumers, even if only on a subconscious level. In your article you say "Sony's recent PS3 commercials are straightforward, clever, and actually sell you the product", but I think great adverts do much more than that.
