Just check the feedback for the seller. That will give you a good idea of what their reputation is like.

Ebay is okay but lately they seem to get bumped up to gamestop like prices for used games; like EXACTLY the same prices, which is a little weird.

The other thing you have to make sure is that the game isn't being shipped from Hong Kong (bootleg capital of the world).

I would recommend Amazon, they usually have better prices anyway.

Roughly 80% of my 360 game collection came from ebay and I have had nothing but positive experiences from it. For those of you suggesting Amazon, I agree, but only if its from Amazon and not 3rd party hosted on the site, as I have been sent pirated copies of games that are listed as legit and their feedback has been positive, so yea, I trust ebay more in that sense.

When I want to buy a used SNES or harder to find Gamecube, PSX/PS2 game I usually turn to the 'bay. So far I've had nothing but good experiences, but I only buy from people who have above 95% positive feedback.

Most used games I've bought online have been through Amazon, and they've all worked great. I've bought probably three games on Ebay, and they've all worked great. However the games on Ebay have all been console games, specifically NES and SNES, so you can't really get bootleg copies. Although the fact that an NES game works after 20 years without a game sleeve, and is shipped 1,000 miles is a testament to the fact that the sellers are good, and that Nintendo built a good cartridge.

I use ebay and other online retailers. We kind of have to in Australia, a new game in a store costs $100-120 AUD. The same game imported from say the UK or India costs $50-60 AUD. The thing with ebay is just look for a seller with a high score and ensure your buying a new game that is sealed.

I have never really had an issue with ebay.. The people that do I find are quite dodgy in life in general.

If the prices are so terrible then why haven't you Australian gamers arranged some sort protest?

I have used play.com quite a bit and am very pleased with them. (This is for the european gamers out there)

Always low prices and free shipping. The play-trade (second hand) service is excellent as well.

Venturing a guess, but I would assume because protests don't do jack shit. Especially against developers based in Japan, the US, and throughout the EU. Plus the inherent shipping costs, and tariffs.

Be very wary of buying DS games from Asia.
If it seems to good to be true...3 Wii games for 3p? Avoid.
However, I have the bulk of my collection from eBay, mostly PS2 & XBOX games and have never really had a problem. Just read the descriptions. Box, Inlay etc. included? and don't be afraid to ask the seller questions.
Also, check their feedback, the higher the percentile the safer it is. But also check for negative feedback to ascertain why it was negative.

As long as you're not spending on new consoles that entail large transactions, you should be fine.

I didn't think they had to protest against the developers. I thought that since games are much more reasonably priced in the US and Japan that it must be someone in Australia screwing with the prices.

I'm not extremely familiar with Australian taxes, however the common cost of a game in the US is $60, whereas that's around $85 AU. So that explains a large part of the cost difference. I'm sure a sum of the rest of it comes from shipping and distribution costs, since Australia isn't quite on the fore-front of everyone's minds. No offense to my Aussie friends, but it's not the hugest market. I'm sure there's additional costs. I'll have to look into Australian tax code, I wouldn't be surprised if there's some sort of 'sin' tax they have on games, much like Utah has on cigarettes and alcohol in the US. Also, if the stores have gotten away with inflating prices to $100 AU for so long, why would they mark them down?
So I support my Australian gamers, because the prices they pay for new games converted to US dollars is between 70 and 90, and there's no way in hell I'd pay that for a game.

I have used eBay for lots of games and have never been disappointed, but I've never used it for any brand-new games that I've never played. I always rent them. If I can't find a game anywhere else, I go to eBay.

Well people still buy them so it wont change.

Yes we are only a small market since we miss out on a lot of games and a lot of content. We also have nothing higher than an MA rating for games and a lot of games are cut becuase of that. A good example is Rockband, I ordered RB2 from the states and had it shipped here before RB1 was released here (RB2 still hasnt been released)

As far as I know theres no exclusive tax on games just the GST of 10% which is on all goods.

For Xbox Live we connect to the US servers with unplayable pings (only 1 or 2 xbox games have a local search filters)

..meh I could whinge all day, wont change anything becuase the rest of the world doesnt really seem to care or know :(
