Creative Assembly from the Total War fame announced today, that the next Total War game is going to be based in the Napoleonic wars.

Features

Napoleon: Total War is the new chapter in the critically acclaimed Total War series and opens up a new narrative layer to the genre-defining franchise. From the early Italian campaign to the Battle of Waterloo, Napoleon covers two decades of relentless battles, a backdrop of a world in flames against which the story of an extraordinary military career unfolds.

Whether you play as the legendary General or against, the outcome of war can never be guaranteed. The course of history relies on your ability to lead your troops through the most intense battles as never seen before in a Total War game.

The genre-defining franchise brings Napoleon to life:
Napoleon: Total War defines a new standard within the genre with exciting characters and a cinematic narrative, mind-blowing battle sequences and an unrivalled mix of turn-based and real-time strategy.

Three new episodic campaigns:
Take command and lead your armies on land and sea over three campaigns: Italy, Egypt and Mastery of Europe. The seamless mix of objective-based missions and sandbox experience makes this the most complete Total War experience to date.

Cutting-edge multiplayer:
Napoleon features fully integrated multiplayer modes and a complete set of online functionalities: Steam achievements, gameplay bonuses, uniform editor and voice communications.

All new Napoleonic battles and units:
Advanced weaponry enables new tactical options and even more exciting real-time battles on an epic scale, while the highly detailed environments and improved battlefield buildings guarantee a realistic recreation of famous historical battles.

The game is a stand-alone feature so it won't be an expansion for Empire:Total War, and its scheduled for release in February 2010. Pricing is yet unknowed.

For fans of Empire: Total War, CA are still commited to work on Empire:Total War with fixes and new content.

You can watch the trailer here. [http://www.sega.co.uk/games/napoleon-total-war/?t=EnglishUK] And read the IGN preview here. [http://pc.ign.com/articles/101/1014877p1.html]

And yes the game will require STEAM.

So what you guys think? Is this a good idea considering the state of Empire right now? Or did CA shoot themselfs on the foot again?

I have yet to pay a total war game due to my crappy graphics card but, I may have a new better computer by then and if I do I will probably get this. The trailer was awesome.

To be honest I cant really see that much of a difference between this an Empire
Me neither, it sounds like an expansion pack pretending to be a new game.

They should pull their fingers out and do WW1

I'll almost certainly get it, as a fan of the series, but I'll reserve judgment on it till then. Does sound a lot like Empire, though.

Sounds more like a expansion for Empire.. However, as with Empire, I prolly won't look at it. I don't really enjoy the Imperial age in history, and I find battle on a huge scale only awesome for the time where they were fought mostly by close combat/archery means.. which should make it obvious I never bother with gunpowder units in Medieval II.

Watching two armies thundering mindlessly together in a bloody impact is.. far more enjoyable than watching two armies of people in impractical circus costumes firing in turns at one another. : |

Oh fuck this. Empire was shit enough, now they're going for the same fucking thing AGAIN!? They can go shove a rubber dick up their arse if they think I'm going to buy another Total War game until they start making them like the Medieval, Rome and Medieval II again.

I should think so. I was appauled how buggy Empire was (and still is). What's worse is they've optimised it for Nvidia cards so using ATI cards with anti-ailiasing or adaptive anti-ailiasing turned on causes the whole game to turn into some sort of epileptic fit inducing device.

Last Total War game I played was Rome, or Spartan Total Warrior if that counts..(such an awesome game)
Still wish they made a sequel to that instead...
I completely agree with you. Those are my favourite two total wars. However this does sound very fun. I still wont be able to play it so Ill have to hope my friend buys it. But why cant they go back to the days of upclose fighting. Empire was horrible in my opinion. Just so boring for the most part. The only fun bit was the campaign and the huge map it had. Sea Battles were also quite exciting.

But they should go back to the days of Medievil and such.

That's exactly how I feel about Empire. It's just boring. I wish they'd do a remake of Rome with better graphics, more units, and the combat style from Medieval II (where individual units would fight one on one and perform special finishers on one another).

When I saw this, and the screen shots of it on IGN, I literally blew my load. Everywhere.

Then I realised I will never be able to play it on its top settings, and then I cried. I'll still get it though. I love that era of history, and I was a tad disappointed that Empire didn't cover it, but no longer! :D

Although I must admit, I'm a tad confused as to why they're trying to pretend it's a whole new game, when it's blatantly just a stand alone expansion for Empire. Not that that's a bad thing...

Also, to people who say Empire was bugged, what problems did you have? 'Cos I haven't experienced any, other than the occasional spastic AI goof...

Why not go right back to basics and do a remake of shogun total war, or at least a medieval era set in the east so we have japan china korea etc, now that would be good and fresher then just a remake

I would love a Shogun 2... But it seems they're only aiming for larger and larger conflicts and areas to let the game take place in... We've gone from a single country in Shogun to the Mediterreanian sea in Rome to the entirety of Europe and the colonies in Empire... So wonder what they'll do next...

If Napoleon is any indication they going to stick with the 18th and 19th Century conflicts for awhile. There's still alot of stuff to explore.

Well that's the point, after several updates the AI is still thick as mince, it still declares war on you for simply having territory adjacent to their own even in cases were established trade routes and alliances would prove more beneficial. The AI still can't conduct a proper sea invasion and the game still suffers from utterly unsolvable white screen CTDs.

Empire is still a new game and it is still full of bugs, for CA to announce that they are now working on a follow up to it is a huge slap in the face for anyone that bought Empire on release day. Sure they say they will continue to work on Empire but really how long will that go on for and will they actually get the bugs sorted before they decide that it is no longer worth the effort?

sounds essentailly like what they did with Medieval 2: Kingdoms, smaller sections of the world focusing on specific events, which personally I quite liked. Could work out

I used to really like CA...but lately they have gone down hill. First Empire Total War, which was fun...but ridden with bugs and horrible AI. And now they are producing this, and ETW is still not really fixed yet. Ah well...

Will this one have guns and cannons for main weapons too =(?
Of course not. In the 19th Century everyone decided to go back to swords and armours, even tho there was rifles around. ^^

Yes, you still going to have muskets, cannons, ships and other stuff.

Why don't they just make it an expansion pack to empire? Would have made more sense.
