Wouldn't it be hilarious if the female soldier is a Prestige 10 unlock, thus reinforcing the trope that women are just trophies to be won?
Best idea 2013

That would actually be pretty fucking hilarious, and also a good way to grab more attention for COD xD...

The massive war than stuff like that is capable of doing... wow.

Kudos to IW! I'm genuinely surprised. Now CoD has gone from a game series I don't give a damn about to a series I'll look into more.

If I can has bots in multiplayer, I don't see a reason to not get the game since the community's the major turn off for me. That, and up until now it's been a sausage-fest shooter.

It doesn't take much to make an inclusive game that makes people feel more welcome, it seems. It's a welcome step forward, IMO.

I wonder if Jim had any influence at all?
I think the big influence was the Change in the law that made it so the Pentagon can no longer forbid women from front line combat roles. The law is pretty recent but it probably was a realism deal, Female soldiers were not allowed into front line combat roles, I think fighter pilot was an exception but I'm not sure and would only be in combat in ambush situations (to be fair, a huge percentage of battles in the past wars were ambush situations.) I do think that now that the law is gone it would be more realistic to have women in the game on the front lines. It won't be long to have more women in those roles because Front line roles have a higher rate of promotion than non combat roles. There is still the physical exam, which won't be lowered for women, but it won't be impossible for them to pass, just easier for males due to the fact the male body tends to have higher upper body strength, which is important, you need soldiers that are capable of carrying a fallen comrade to the medical chopper.

Still it's really good to see games to acknowledge the changes in the military, hopefully the next batch will have women and gay soldiers in the campaign.

You raise solid points! I'm just kinda optimistic that Jim Sterling is actually impacting the game industry.

It's also likely that modern advancements in warfare have increased the odds of women being allowed on front lines. Not that, AFAIK, the soldiers in CoD ever lugged full equipment.

News update:
http://kotaku.com/why-female-soldiers-were-finally-added-to-call-of-duty-1142063196

# As expected, female player models will have the same hit boxes.
# They say they couldn't add female player models before due to technical limitations. Fair to say that not everyone believes that's entirely true. Make of that what you will, but even if that's true I'd still call it bad marketing. Why not go out and say: "players wanted it, we agreed that it is a good idea, so we did it." In that case, many people would be wondering what took them so long, sure, but better late then never, right? And I'd say that's better than people believing you're trying to take them for fools, as many do now.

If people like Jim actually have an impact i better find myself a new hobby because oh good lord... Anywho i think the poster you replied to was probably more on spot.

I guess this is a good thing, honestly I'm basically ambivalent to it although I am curious to see what kind of effect this will have on multiplayer interactions.

I do find it kind of weird that there are people in this thread under the impression that effectively doubling the amount of character models to be produced would not have an effect on cost or the minimum specs though.

How long until the call of duty based pornographic fanfics?

a week? two weeks? a day?

I used to play call of duty semi-competitively but I quit a few years ago. I don't really know if I would have cared that much about having female models in game or would have noticed.

I think it's a good thing. I don't play COD, but there are women on the battlefields and in service in real life. So, why not video games?

I am betting a whole mess of sexist jokes and harassment are going to be prevalent when this goes live though :/ I know that community doesn't have the best reputation of being mature.

There's already call of Duty porn, usually involving Price and Ghost fucking or the Black ops characters. Oh wait you meant Call of Duty Porn with a male and a female.

Gimme a sec.....

Ok back, yeah looks like there's already porn of the main character from Black Ops 2 and that hacker girl from the floating city level. So yeah there's that I guess.

While I don't know about that particular community, I never had the impression of being treated differently while playing female characters in other online shooters (and not talking in voice chat, obviously). For the most part you don't really notice your opponent's gender. So, judging by my own (limited) experience, I'd be guardedly optimistic that including female player models won't lead to a deterioration in any game that does this.

I'm not sure what the WoW bit had to do with this but I guess that's kind of neat, too bad no one making COD cares enough to do something like that...

If my spelling and what not is crap it's cuz I just got home from work and I'm tired :(
I bring up the WoW bit because this could just be the result of an at home project that they brought in.
And Balance is one of the hardest, make or break features of a game. How you measure it, and the data you need to adjust it, require hundreds if not thousands of hours of playtesting to produce. Now matter how much work you do ahead of time, you can't tell how people will play it until people play it. A lot of people.

Hopefully other FPS games *cough* Battlefield *cough* will pick up on this, since they're already trying to copy CoD anyway.
What's the point, considering:
1) You've never played Battlefield MP
2) You most likely aren't interested in ever playing Battlefield MP
I suppose you meant to quote me, since that's my quote.
And... Er, what gives you that idea?
I've been a Battlefield fan up until BF3 came out with its regenerating health, tiny maps(in comparison to its predecessors), shitty scripted SP campaign and twitch-based combat.
I like BF3, but it isn't nearly as good as BF1942/2 is, in my opinion.

So they made a female model for a multiplayer mode. A female model who's going to be kitted out so she'll look identical to a male model unless they go full idiot and have boob kevlar or something. Way to make a pointless gesture and waste some cash, I suppose.
They probably will, I'm sure it'll be obvious seeing the player model what gender they are. Which as you pointed out, when fully kitted they should basically look the same.

Of course the hit boxes would have to be equivalent to balance the game, and it doesn't make sense to have a hit box that doesn't correspond to the player model, since when playing MP I see the model and that's what I'm shooting at. So really if they have identical hit boxes and basically identical models, seems like a waste of time. But hey, if they want to have male and female faces for players to choose, fine by me.

You know to be honest with the amount of focus on personalized style and character customization that's been put on it in the last few years, I'm surprised tf2 doesn't have female versions of the classes yet.

Meh.. not like you can distinguish male or female in full combat gear anyway. Specially not if you only see a model for 0.5sec before it falls down.

I'd rather be impressed if they used it as a character in the story. But babysteps i guess.

they added female models? Yay?

I guess for the sake of more options, it is always a good thing, supposing they are balanced in terms of hit box and everything else. So good for that.
As for it being a move in the right direction towards female representation and everything else some people tout this as... I'll be less optimistic. Bare bones, it seems a "ok, shut up already" sort of move.

So, in the end, I guess it is good, though really sort of "meh" to me.

Imagine if they give the female soldiers skimpy armor outfits like we see in fantasy games!

There have been some developed by chemicalalia that look fairly good, although it's pretty unlikely they ever get added. Some have cited the addition of extra silhouettes to distinguish between as a major factor, others have warned that hitboxs may be different sizes or not match up with the visible models, both serious problems for a class based competitive game.

Personally I just think it would break the game. When they added a second Misc item slot (for cosmetic badges and whatnot) the whole game went buggy as hell, and servers were crashing left and right. It was never intended to have as much extra crap (see: hats) added to it as has been, and I think it just can't take no more.

I'm not saying it would be easy but since they can make robot versions of every class and add a horde gametype, it seems pretty doable, especially with how much money valve makes of tf2 alone, not even counting steam and all their other content.
