As a massive LittleBigPlanet fanboy I'll have to disagree with you there!
It's not on the level of Little Big Planet 2, but it is on the level of Little Big Planet. LBP let you do some cool stuff, but it was still constrained to platforming, while LBP2 gives you far more options. Halo Reach is fairly constrained to an FPS, but you can actually make a combat racing game out of it as well, and you could even make some portal like puzzles. With Halo Reach thanks to Forge 2.0 you get an FPS, 3rd Person Vehicle Combat, Combat Racing, Puzzle Platformer, and who knows what else. With Little Big Planet you're still just with a sidescrolling platformer with very creative levels, but nonetheless it's still just one game.

From what i saw Halo Reach was basically just whacking pre-made objects down. Unless it has logic operators and connectors and stuff i still don't think they're on the same level.
It does actually have some of that stuff. Certainly you don't have a full fledged level editor, but there's some pretty crazy stuff you could do, literally making a 3D first person platformer out of it if you want to have a bunch of boxes floating in mid air, particularly if you throw in jet packs. While I'm sure Forge 2.0 is missing some things in Little Big Planet, the reverse is also true, while LBP2 makes it look like you could do everything in Halo except for the first person aspect.

I'm half expecting to be proven wrong, i mean it would be really nice to see a 3D editor that's as flexible as LBP.
Given what people were able to do with Forge 1.0 and all the tricks they pulled off, I could definitely see Forge 2.0 being damn flexible once some people pull of tricks to do some more things.

Maybe it'd be safer to say that Forge World is more similar to ModNationRacers, that game has a really flexible editor, but it mostly boils down to using premade objects in creative ways.
I could go with that, yeah.

Random Annoying Gamer (RAG): I want originality and innovation!

Game Developer(GD): Okay.. like what.

RAG: Not space marines!

GD: What do you have in mind?

RAG: Something different!

GD: Like what? What are we talking, what would be different?

RAG: DIFFERENT! I want different and original!

GD: LIKE, WHAT!

RAG: That's your job! I shouldn't have to list things and think of ideas! It's your job to be original and innovative! Now DO IT!

GD: /sigh

"DURR! SPACE MARINES! EVERY GAME IS ABOUT SPACE MARINES!"

Valkyrie Chronicles is about space marines? So is Infamous Bioshock and Arkham? Really? Hell Resident Evil 5 is nothing BUT space marines.

Remember that part in Dragon Age, when you turn into a space marine and fight other space marines. Or that part in Assassins Creed where you find out your really a Space Marine all along.

So is every single game on Kongregate. I mean, every second game there is about space marines.

Shit you can't throw a snowball without hitting a space marine in WoW, Aion, Warhammer, FFXI.

Not to mention how every Final Fantasy game is about space Marines.

Mario Kart? More Like Space Marine Kart Am i right?

Po ke SPACE MARINE!!!!! Gotta catch them all! Space Marines that is!

Who can forget the game "The Company of Myself". With every challenge about being a space marine on a space ship.

Or heavy Rain. The extraordinary tail of the Origami Space marine. And the four space marines you follow throughout he game.

And little big plant. Christ talk about overload. WAYYY to many space marines in that game. Seriously i think every second word was space marine.

....

I'm sorry... I'm sorry... I'm sorry... I kinda snapped there didn't it.... Just.. ugg.... my brain meats... There are TONS of games out there that have nothing to do with Space marines. It just means that when you walk into EB you move your head half an inch over instead of staring at the first thing you see and screaming space marine.

Christ.

I love Space Marines, and I think the reason they appeal is because of a couple reasons:

1) The allow people to identify with overgrown, macho bullshit from days of old. Everyone loves vikings, right?

2) They fulfill a need for further exploration beyond our own planet and our own existence. They live in a world that we all concede that we will never see. They often use technology and weapons that we will never see in our lifespan.

In essence, Space Marines are like Vikings from Outer Space, which gives me a raging hard-on.

I'm not arguing that I wouldn't like to see other games, but space marines aren't going away until ACTUAL space marines exist. Even then, it'll probably be a genre-specific thing, like WWII games.

My God, people, rant time:

Space Marines aren't really that popular. Halo, Mass Effect, Starcraft, sure, but what else? For every game with space marines we get a lot more without space marines.

Rant time over, I think games of today are original, at least original enough for me.

There are plenty of original games out there, maybe you should stop looking for space marines if you don't want to see them.
Or you could always raise enough money to make your own AAA title, and then we can complain about how there's no innovation because you didn't want to risk your money.

Well, every FPS that isn't set in the past or present day is basically going to be labeled as "space marines". If you make a game that's not set in the future, then you have to use weapons that exist already - either that or make a alternate timeline, resistance style. And if that happens to include aliens (it will) then it will be the creative equivalent of space marines.

I don't even know why they're called Marines to be perfectly honest. There's no damn water in the middle of space!

I guess it's just a fascination thing with Marines. No idea why. I mean, if you're flying round in space, surely it'd be a space centered Air Force?

When can we move past the "Space Marine" phase of gaming and find the next brilliant idea? Sure, Mass Effect and Starcraft are fun games, but I'd like to see more games like Odin Sphere or Okami, which had a plot line that didn't take space in the black abyss known as space, or in a gunmetal gray map.

When did space marines become popular anyways? They all have heavy metal suits (Most cases, it looks like just waving hi would be impossible), and guns that just shout "OVER COMPENSATION"!
Whine much?

Yes, shame on users for thinking soldiers and guns and stuff are cool.

Stop insulting shit for the sole reason that it's popular. There's nothing wrong with space marines besides the fact that there are so many games revolving around them. Your anger is as original as the shovelware at which it's directed. If I just replaced the guns with flowers, would it suddenly be "creative" and "imaginative"? Well, even if it did, people still wouldn't buy it, but would be perfectly content to cite it as an example when they want to ***** about lack of originality in games.

Finally, here's a tasty piece of QFT:

Developers and publishers can't afford to make these type of games if you don't go out and fucking buy them

I love Okami so much I bought it three times. :D So, uh, there!

Silliness aside, I agree with you, the more original games, like Okami or Viewtiful Joe are left in the dust behind things like Halo and Call of Duty, which I am not bashing, things are popular for a reason of course, but that doesn't mean that the occasional original game can't slip through, past the "safe" games. Although, to be fair, games like Assassin's Creed and Batman Arkham Asylum sold well, and I certainly wouldn't consider them to be your archetypal "safe" game. It's just that everyone only pays attention to the big shooters despite the others, and choose to nag about stagnation.

People keep banging on about these bald space marines, but I'm honestly not seeing that many.

Also, gamers aren't interested in true originality. They've proven that with sales. I'll bet that half the people that call for originality in games ignore the most original games to come out. Why? Because they focus all of their attentions on the bald space marines and then moan about them.

there's Forge 2.0 in Halo: Reach which looks about as awesome and full of potential as Little Big Planet to me.
As a massive LittleBigPlanet fanboy I'll have to disagree with you there!

I'll agree partially, for an FPS level editor it looks pretty damn awesome, but it's nothing compared to LBP from that aspect.
Halo Reach is actually the first [Space Marine] game to grab my interest, i love my level editors! :D
wait wait. wut.
I am guessing you have never modded a valve game or for that matter used any kind of editor on a pc.
We're talking about console games though. I doubt Halo Reach is going to have the equivalent of Source SDK built into it.

Sure there are a few unique games out there..a few but most major games are just shoot, duck, rinse and repeat.

The main character may change from a thief to a combat solider to an assassin and the setting may change from a alien planet to a war zone but it's still shoot, duck, rinse and repeat.
