what was wrong with Renaissance Italian assassins who ride on DiVinci's flying machines and kill people with blades strapped to their wrists. and all of that being memories locked in dna that was passed on to near future era descendants to help in the fight of an ancient war over the freedom of humanity and freewill that's gone on for the past 1000 years in a "is there really a god" theme?

that's pretty original
Well the one you played was a womanizer, but for the most part that's it.

I'm pretty happy with the gaming world as it is right now. I've got a list with at least 28 games I'm going to buy.

No. We can't have some originality, because then people will whine and moan that it's too different. Then some people will praise it just because it's different, even if it isn't good, and some will just assume it's bad before trying it. So either way, someone's gonna *****.

If you think games have space marines as the main characters all the time, then I suggest you use this thing called google, or perhaps go to an actual game store, you will be suprised that most games aren't what you think they are.

Why are you hating on games that have marines that fight in space? Do you really think most games use this type of plot?

Are you really only able to see games that have this type of character?

Seriously guy, expand your horizons...... they make a lot of games that don't have space marines.

I know you are just kidding around, nobody really things the way you are posting.

Just in case you are serious tho (not that there is any chance of this, you just want dumb people to post on your thread....... like me, I am dumb for taking this seriously) Science Fiction, Marines, War, Fighting, Conflict, Epic, Brutal, all these words have this idea of great game play possibility. Go play your Moms Wii if you want to bowl or play a lame baseball sim.

Not good enough?

Become a PC gamer and play Bejewled or Zuma or some 5 year old version of some Valve game.

I know games nowadays aren't all about space marines.... I actually can't remember the last game I bought that had space marines as the foremost character.... Warhammer 40k... it was a few years ago... besides that, do you really want to have a list of games that aren't space marines? Would that make you happy??

But as for your questions: "When did space marines become popular anyways?"

There was this movie called Aliens that came out in 1986. It's probably older than most people who post on this site. It was kinda cool. Ask your parents about it.

As far as the metal guns that over compen...... never mind. You wouldn't get the joke I want to add here.

Odin Sphere and Okami are games that you have every right to call okay. Why must you try to bring other types of games lower just to feel better about your games that don't sell well?

You should really spend more time thinking about your problems before you post such silly ideas.

There's plenty of originalyt, open your eyes.

Little Big Planet
ModNation Racers
Echochrome
Pixeljunk Eden
flOw
Flower
World of Goo
And Yet It Moves
Snoopy Flying Ace
Dead Rising

There's plenty of originality, on all 3 platforms.
for every one of these games there are 1000 gray (space) shooters
There aren't even 10,000 games across all 3 platforms, let alone 10,000 space marine shooters.

And when it comes to originality, there's Forge 2.0 in Halo: Reach which looks about as awesome and full of potential as Little Big Planet to me.

I'm not, it was getting late and I didn't want to stay up listing every single game I could think of so I just listed the first few that came to my mind on each platform.

Basically Western and Japanese developers have different target audiences. Play more japanese games if you don't wanna play as a space marine. Simple.
The same people who complain about space marines complain about all Japanese games being about teens saving the world.

I can tell you when we're going to see more games like Odin Sphere and Okami:

When gamers pull their heads out of their arses and actually go out and buy them instead of constantly whining about how there are no original games.

Developers and publishers can't afford to make these type of games if you don't go out and fucking buy them
This. Times 1000000.Also keep in mind that those kinds of games are pretty niche. And hardcore gamers aren't known for their niche preferences.

Space marines are popular because choosing to do a sci fi game allows for more freedom in game design. You can just make up most of the weapons. However the Cameron style of space marine has been over done.

If you're bored of generic fps games then take this hint:
STOP BUYING GENERIC FPS GAMES!

Seriously, noone is forcing you to buy anything. There's an absolute ton of originality in the games industry right now, so if the only games you're playing are Halo and CoD it's your own damn fault.

As a massive LittleBigPlanet fanboy I'll have to disagree with you there!

I'll agree partially, for an FPS level editor it looks pretty damn awesome, but it's nothing compared to LBP from that aspect.
Halo Reach is actually the first [Space Marine] game to grab my interest, i love my level editors! :D

When can we move past the "Space Marine" phase of gaming and find the next brilliant idea? Sure, Mass Effect and Starcraft are fun games, but I'd like to see more games like Odin Sphere or Okami, which had a plot line that didn't take space in the black abyss known as space, or in a gunmetal gray map.

When did space marines become popular anyways? They all have heavy metal suits (Most cases, it looks like just waving hi would be impossible), and guns that just shout "OVER COMPENSATION"!
Someone's been watching a lot of Zero Punctuation.

OT: There are plenty of "original" games out there, just go buy them. They're just not being released by big studios. Activision isn't going to release the next big artsy-original-cult classic game. Just because the "original" games aren't mainstream doesn't mean they're non-existent.

Also I think a lot of people are trying to be the "hipster non-conformist, go against the flow guys". If every big developing company were mass producing these "original" games we would have people whining that there aren't enough greyish, brownish, space marine shoot'em ups.

Exactly. Instead of whining about the lack of originality, why don't you do some research first. You would have seen that there are plenty of original games.
Now I suggest that you go out and fine some of these games.

You should really stop using numbers, you're not good at them. It's not even 90%. Or 50% even.

It's not on the level of Little Big Planet 2, but it is on the level of Little Big Planet. LBP let you do some cool stuff, but it was still constrained to platforming, while LBP2 gives you far more options. Halo Reach is fairly constrained to an FPS, but you can actually make a combat racing game out of it as well, and you could even make some portal like puzzles. With Halo Reach thanks to Forge 2.0 you get an FPS, 3rd Person Vehicle Combat, Combat Racing, Puzzle Platformer, and who knows what else. With Little Big Planet you're still just with a sidescrolling platformer with very creative levels, but nonetheless it's still just one game.

I meant like you know. consoles. pc, 360, ps3, wii, ds, psp.
Oh, I see. Yeah, I didn't mention any DS games, but I also didn't mention iOS either, and there's a ton of originality over there. Of course as the previous thread showed, pretty much nobody on the Escapist is even aware of that.

And now, my suggestion for a fresh, yet familiar game that could probably sell well. For example, let's drift only a slight bit away from Mass Effect and imagine the following: a third-person shooter about a squad of badass space cops. You can play as a human or as one of several alien types (all of which are written in detail), use a wide spectrum of special powers in addition to standard guns, and your ultimate goal is to take down a major arms dealer. The powered armour is light like in ME, or even lighter. It's not entirely original, but it is pretty fresh. Would anyone play that?
That sounds like Crackdown, doesn't it?
Thats sounds EXACTLY like Mass Effect (only you choose your character type)

Listen, OP, some people like some things, and other people like other things. Some people like dragon slayers, some people like actual dragons. Some folks like demon hunters, and others like demon overlords. Many people like space warriors with assault rifles, and others like androgynous Japanese teenagers who kill things with overcompensatory phallic objects. It's all a matter of taste, and complaining about it on an obscure forum in the arse-end of the internet won't make the slightest bit of difference.

From what i saw Halo Reach was basically just whacking pre-made objects down. Unless it has logic operators and connectors and stuff i still don't think they're on the same level.
Halo is kind of a mix of genres, i'd imagine the most you can get out of reach is taking those individual genres apart and create the basics game out of each of them.

The Platformer genre extremely versatile, and the LBP tools are extremely flexible - it lets you dig really deep into Platformer mechanics. With LBP1 tools alone you can make tons of types of puzzle games and 2D shooters. There's 2 million levels and people are still coming up with entirely new platformer mechanics occasionally, i just can't see that happening with a Halo editor xD

I'm half expecting to be proven wrong, i mean it would be really nice to see a 3D editor that's as flexible as LBP.

Maybe it'd be safer to say that Forge World is more similar to ModNationRacers, that game has a really flexible editor, but it mostly boils down to using premade objects in creative ways.
