Can we please stop it with the Tumblr hate?

I resent those comments! Us here at the Escapist in-fight WAAAAAAY more often than any other website!

March Madness got us flooded with gore porn because users couldn't stand that a company like Zynga was going to beat Valve!

The Game of the Year discussion this year had people tearing out each others throats because some Russian dude sent his followers here to vote for Papers Please!

Don't even get me started on the shit-storm that was Extra Credits leaving!
The difference is, as bad as we are, we are insular. Whatever problems arise in the Escapist, it stays in the Escapist.

As far as I know, there hasn't been any movements to bother anyone outside of our social circle. No, huge organised protests, planned raids, Doxxing runs or any attempt to change or damage others rallied under our name (again, that I know of as a long time lurker).

Compare that to Tumblr SJWs which gets up in arms on a lot of things and don't often confine the noise to just the site. I suppose that's one of the reasons for the much of the hate they get, their busy body, nosey antics bringing along a Holier-than-thou attitude where they go.

As for the site itself, I have no problems. Its just a place where a bunch of fandoms (and porn...) can congregate on, rather harmless besides the usual background levels of internet stupidity. However, the site harbours a REALLY vocal minority of SJWs.

My biggest pet peeves about the tumblr SJW is its rather hypocritical actions, Their misguided attempt at forcing tolerance using intolerant methods, using Zerg rush levels of mass shouting. Add to the fact that movements can spring up so fast that there rarely is time to research any proof before misinformation builds up to drown out any dissenting opinions.

So yea, Tl;DR, Site itself is fine, VERY LOUD, VERY VISIBLE hostile Vocal Minority that don't stay confined in one place.
Hence my theory as why the site gets some hate.

@Leon Declis, yea this guy puts what I want to say in a a more concise and detailed way than I could hope.

I actually used to follow Tena about a year or so ago, back when she was just a simple Horror movie/ Gravity Falls blog, I dropped her after she developed this nasty habit of getting weirdly obsessed with one particular group of "SJWs" who were angry at bronies (can you blame them?) and seemingly going out of her way to take everything they said in the worst possible way, even when I personally know they didn't mean it as such.
I haven't followed her recently so I don't know what's happening now, but I spotted a post of hers on the Jon Tron tag earlier defending his use of the r-word, so I still don't think we'd get along too well.
Don't know wiley, couldn't say.

I wouldn't say Tumblr compares to 4chan in any way shape or form, 4chan is the raw sewage of the internet, Tumblr just has some rough edges that people like to focus on and blow out of proportion. Other people on this thread have said it very well, Tumblr's vocal minority tends to be a little louder and perhaps more vocal then most, but the vast majority of the people on there are perfectly equitable.

Funny you should mention that, I may have only joined the Escapist last year, but I've been coming here weekly for Zero Punctuation for well longer then I've been on Tumblr, 2009 if I'm not mistaken.
I did watch Extra Credits back in the day and I recall hearing about their jump to Penny Arcade, but I didn't really pay attention to the forum discussion as I wasn't really one to lurk the forums.

Isn't tumblr some sort of porn site or have I been using it wrong all along?
Oddly enough, if you look at Tumblr as a porn site, it's pretty much the greatest porn site of all time. Practically no ads, significantly lower chance of viruses, wide variety of options for every taste and fetish, I don't even consume porn and I bump into it all the time without even trying!

I won't say you don't have have points, you very much do, yeah we haven't been doing a fantastic job of image control, and the fandom system is pure bullshit (I have never watched an episode of Supernatural, Dr. Who, or Sherlock, and thanks to their massive popularity on Tumblr I am so sick of them that I never want to), and some of the more hardcore "SJWs" can get a little bit draining after a while, so much so that I actually deleted my original account, I'm currently on my second one, because even though all that stuff can wear, I reflected on it all and Tumblr just seemed like in the long run it did much more good for me then Ill, and I think that's worth something.
Also, yeah you're kind of right about that list of things I learned about though Tumblr being somewhat irreverent, I was really just trying to add some level of personal perspective to the issue.

I think the problem here, as stated earlier by other people, is that you get overrepresentation of certain people on certain websites and you judge them by them, like 4chan that gets judged one way because of /b/ (at least in the past) and not /an/ and Tumblr gets judged because of http://mentakingup2muchspaceonthetrain.tumblr.com/ and not the rest.

I'm with the OP. Any time Tumblr is having a "shitfit" chances are that at least 99.9% of the people on Tumblr are completely unaware of what's happening. Hardly anyone on there knew about Dashcon until everyone started making jokes about it, for example. Anyway, as I've said before on here, Tumblr is far more broken up then people seem to think, and it's designed to be that way. You create an account, you start following people who post stuff you like, and hopefully people who like the stuff you post start following you. Don't just run into the SJW tags and start smearing your face on the first thing that makes you angry.

But yeah, given that this thread alone has people referring to Tumblr as having "a higher concentration of cunts" and being "where all the fucktarded social justice warriors and morons" gather, I have a hard time buying that this is a nicer place to be. Don't worry, we encourage critical thinking here!

And funnily enough it was on this website I was compared to being the Grand Dragon of the KKK, not Tumblr. I appreciate that my experience probably isn't the usual, though.

I remember surfing the Cultural Appropriation tag and was surprised how insanely racist and xenophobic people were, hell I saw someone condemning white parents who adopt non white kids, or white people having dread-locks. The scary part is they were just so proud of themselves for what they were saying.
I should point out that the (most famous) post on Tumblr condemning white parents adopting non-white kids was actually made by a neo-Nazi who had a problem with that kind of adoption for... Well, the obvious reasons a neo-Nazi would. But a lot of people just assumed it was a SJW post and ran with it.

Um, yeah, I somehow manage to use Tumblr and even follow few gay rights/feminism blogs and avoid all the rabid shit. (then again, the way people like to throw the word SJW around, I'm sure blog posts about the history and cultural views on body-hair, or female character design in different games are probably the most horrific things ever.)

I mostly use it for fandom stuff though.
And art and photography.

My biggest run-in with that stuff was when a friend got anon hate for saying someone was tall. It was so dumb we're not even sure what it was all about.
(Also I'm way more open about my sexuality and gender identity on THIS site than on Tumblr, since there have actually been people making threads and inviting you to a discussion. It comes up way less on a site where I'm mostly in contact with people who like the same comics I do)

Tumblr isn't a singular thing, but people want to have their solid targets so they can feel persecuted.
It's so much more impressive to imagine there is an organized website unified to eradicate white cishet men everywhere.
It makes it easy to dismiss any arguments that can be tied to it too.

The way the internet portrays the users of tumblr reminds me of Rick in The Young Ones. I've never been on tumblr myself but I've seen some screen grabs of the silly things posted there. I occasionally grab the odd dog and cat gif from tumblr via google though.

Ya know I've heard so much crap about Tumblr I have no desire to ever use it.
Which is sort of unfortunate, since most of the crap is made up. The latest "Tumblr fit" for example happened mostly on Twitter. The facts don't matter.

Is Tumblr a good site? Meh. I mostly see Tumblr when looking up porn totally legit research on Google image search. And amazingly, said porn totally legit research exists despite the supposed toxicity.

Tumblr is basically a scapegoat for everything wrong with the internet. Even if the issue happens on Twitter. Or Facebook. Or YouTube. Or here.

"SJW" is an almost meaningless pejorative, but I'm pretty sure one of the defining characteristics of the "SJW" pejorative is that they are really vocal. That's sort of like saying "I have a problem with Houston because of all the white kids listening to rap."

Of course, it is somewhat different, because "white" and "rap" have real definitions other than "people who are vocal on a subject I disagree with or don't want to deal with."

I missed this before I hit "post," but I think you nailed it here. It borders on conspiracy theories.

Besides, nobody gathers on Tumblr to plot to eradicate straight, white, cismen. We use Google+.

Honestly I've been playing around with the idea that perhaps certain websites' mechanics attract certain people or even just encourage certain behaviors.

It's the reason why Twitter's shitstorms are caused by people doing micdrops and vanishing, it's the reason 4chan created /b/, and it's the reason why you have the infamous MRA thing over with Reddit.

Tumblr is a mixture of blogging and social networking where you get very isolated communities of people who are trying to express things. It's basically livejournal with a quicker share feature. So you get a lot of personal and painful stuff from people where that's one of their few places they can express it, while at the same time you get this stuff overlapping with a lot of media being reposted there. In addition, you get people popularizing their image due to the blog approach.

As such this kind of encourages SJW in several ways, but I hesitate to call that a breeding ground of actual social justice discussion, given that it's not really a place of empathy so much as a place where there's a community for social issues and an easy way to show you care without committing too much to a cause. This is why controversies flare up rather than really stay constant.

It's actually really easy to avoid a lot of drama on that site, same with every social networking site, but I feel it's important to address WHY it gets that reputation.

I mean, take a look at the Escapist, where you have a system where discussions are born in the first couple of pages of a thread, while the later pages are either continuations of things that began in the early pages or they're responses to the OP. You get a lot of people here who then fire off a single post and leave the thread, and users are encouraged to post in the newest stuff.

We value getting our 2 cents in and then leaving, not really looking over a thread for weeks. It's why we get so many "Am I the only one..."s because the site is set up so that what is new is what's at the forefront of the discussion, and so we don't hear as many matching opinions. Meanwhile the hate for this brought on by the large amount of these posts seems almost inherited by new generations of Escapists as they're taught this question is deserving of sarcasm due to this response being so common.

The site's mechanics are also why you'll always see a select group of users at the front page of every article for set periods of time. The site is all about moving to the latest thing.

Just some food for thought on social networking in general.

Two things you need to consider. First, as far as the majority being reasonable, please remember that the squeaky wheel gets the grease. And second, as far as trying to convince the internet to deflate its hate boner, well, Sisyphus comes to mind.

I am actually surprised to see mention of Tena outside of tumblr. I have been following her for a while now, so I got to see some of the change you were talking about. I do more often than not, side with her on many issues though. I mean even though she is VERY abrasive, she tends to be a voice of reason in the misinformed, echo chamber that tumblr can be. She actually still makes many posts about horror and gravity falls still(especially since the second season came out), however, most of her posts about social justice and bronies are responses to questions she has been asked by others.

As for the whole topic in general, I like tumblr; it is an easy way to to see new art and get exposed to other types of media. However, there is quite a lot of misinformation, racism and sexism that tends to be rampant in some circles on tumblr. Frankly, I am unsure what to do to help clean up the community a bit. I figure just call people out on their BS, and if they do anything illegal, report them. I mean hell, one person tried to get someone's husband DEPORTED because they disagreed with them. It...can be quite vexing to see shit like that happen over something so trivial.

Unless some other event happened, I'm going to guess you are talking about Pinkiepony with the whole deportation remark. I think Pinkiepony is also what dragged tena into furiously attacking her whole clique, and spreading out into basically 90% of her anti-sjw posts, which is kind of understandable since pinkie was a unique blend of drama magnet and utter hypocrite.

On the plus side, that deportation fiasco seems to have pretty much killed her presence on Tumblr, I think her blog is still deleted, she probably realized that commiting crimes wouldn't go over so well when she finally turns old enough to be tried as an adult.

OT: Tumblr gets a lot of hate and stereotypes, but so do a lot of websites. 4chan is pretty much just /b to anyone that doesn't go to the site, Reddit is often considered a cesspool of annoying neckbeards and often gets lumped in with either the MRA or red pill crowd, Facebook is pretty much associated with everything vapid and mainstream, and so on and so forth.

The actual stereotypes against Tumblr aren't even new, while they didn't have the term SJW, Livejournal had pretty much the same stereotypes leveled against it when it was relevant, people moved those accusations to Tumblr when it became more popular.
