Arc System Works created BlazBlue Calamity Trigger, which is credited with reviving the 2D fighting genre along with Street Fighter 4. It had great 2D visuals on 3D backdrops, fast paced gameplay, and a surprisingly deep story. Deep stories just don't happen in fighting games.
Later, they released Continuum Shift with new single player modes, 2 new characters on disc, 3 DLC characters later, and a continuation of the plot. All that came at a reduced price of $40 USD. The second DLC character had a pretty bad bug in his programming, which delayed his release on the 360 version. When he finally came out, the price to buy the character was reduced for a month or so as an apology.
When CS2 was released, they gave us the balance patch for free as DLC.
Come 2012, they released Continuum Shift Extend. It contained the latest balancing, new modes, 1 new character, new stories for that character and the DLC characters (they didn't have stories for themselves before this version), and a quick run-down of Calamity Trigger's story. The final kicker is that every past DLC ever released was included on the disc. As far as I know, people who bought any DLC before were never compensated, and everyone else got all the old content and new goodies for $40 USD.
What does everyone think about this? Any or all of it, but I'm most curious to see what everyone thinks about what Arc did when they released CS:Extend.
Everything they do seems nice enough. They're not above releasing DLC, which doesn't necessarily make them bad or anything. They even gave a discount when a character had a fatal bug that they had to fix. When Extend came along, they even gave content to people who never purchase DLC for whatever reason. The thing is that I don't believe something like that has been done before, and the loyal fans who bought every DLC beforehand were never given any warning or anything to show for it. There may have been an announcement pre-release that the old DLC would all be packed onto the disc, but it was likely too late already.
I fall in the camp that never buys DLC and I'm grateful that they chose to give everything to us. I realize that the decision was probably made way after the original Continuum Shift was released and there was no way to warn everyone soon enough, but I still feel bad for the people that were essentially getting just a balance patch, a character, and a little more light on a story that they've seen already.
