Is the Winter Soldier his friend who falls off the train in the first one? I'm not up on comic book stuff.

Indeed he is. In the comics he was more of a kid sidekick (Robin to Cap's Batman).

I should really get some CA comic books before this comes out.

Looks like it should be good. Interesting to see Peggy is in it (I really loved her character) so I'll like to see how she's in the movie.
