Yeah. This is why people like anime; Japan, unlike the vast majority of people in the west (the only exceptions are Pixar's films, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Batman: The Animated Series, and possibly a few others), sees animation as the legitimate storytelling medium it is. Of course cartoons can be mature; there is absolutely no inherent reason why they cannot. It just takes a culture with a shred of artistic sensibility to see it.

I don't think anybody around here would argue that...

Also, blood and such does not equal maturity, it just equals a higher rating. Just saying.

I've just thought of an example that no one has mentioned, captain scarlet the puppet version has a reasonably large amount of violence and some truely dark moments that deal with interesting subject matter.

The mysterons routinely kill people and somtimes even succeed with thier overall plans, they use extremely underhanded tactics like suicide bombers and stealing nuclear weapons, there is also a heavy blend of science fact/fiction that gets thrown in, in one instance a guy gets irridiated so they track him down with gieger counters. Alot of the terms and themes used in each episode would go right over the heads of most kids.

cartoons dont have to be bloody and violent to be mature

take Batman the naimated Series...or Daria BAM there you go

basically its still ingrained in western audiences public concious, most people know otherwise, though "mature" cartoons in that sense arnt "as" mainstream

Buy a DVD from a computer art festival like Siggraph. Pretty much everything on it is a cartoon, and they're about as artsy and philosophical as you can get.

Buh-wha!? Urgh....you really think MLP is MATURE!? You know what i think about that response?

OT: As for animation being Mature, i'd definitely say Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker (Yes, that is no coincidence). It's pretty damned dark in some parts to say the least..i'd also recommend Cowboy bebop, it's another good example of a mature show as is Batman the Animated series.

FACT: There is anime that is more gory then the goriest movie, and there is anime that is more sexual and disturbing then the hardest core porn. Every time I hear someone say anime is for kids, my first thought is 'Wow, this person has a weak stomach. lol'.

Mature cartoons are mature. Kiddy cartoons older people watch and say 'but it's mature' are not mature. You know what I'm talking about, don't pussyfoot around the Pony bullshit.

It's just prejudice. A lot of cartoons are for children so people think every cartoon is for children.
I mean if you look in the American Dad, Family guy, Futurama and Drawn Together corner, you have some examples of adult cartoons. If you look at animes those are even intended for teenagers, not for children.

There is a lot of stuff children won't get. The "spiked bowle", X-men references, Final fantasy fighting music etc. as well as character deapth that I didn't expect in the show. The developers still claim that it was their intention to make the show appealing to adults (parents) as well.
I Think it's a fine exapmle of how even a cartoon that is mainly aimed at children can be enjoiable for adults as well.

it doesnt affect me as much because i read the books and never saw the film.

but 'cartoons' are generally aimed at kids. animated shows can be aimed at anyone.
