Have any of you noticed that the beep used to censor swearwords is actualy more offensive than if they just said the feckin' thing out loud?

Indeed it is. The other annoying thing is when shows try to avoid getting beeped by doing what you did above:

Feck, Frick, Fupp etc.

We're going to have to learn a whole new language in the near future, just to watch shows the FCC can't follow!

Feck is regarded in Ireland as being as bad as fuck. But I don't care, either way. I'll say fuck if I wanna say fuck, and I'll say feck if I wanna say feck. As far as I'm concerned, they're just words.

What really annoys me is when people say the first letter of the word rather than just saying it. And I can't stand those polite ways of saying things, either. Like, rather than say vagina, they'll say something retarded like "front bottom".

Censorship is kinda pointless. People can use flowery words to get around not saying a swear word. That's the reason humanity came up with euphemisms.

I know about the Irish view on Feck and I'm a big Father Ted fan so I've obviously picked it up from there.

I've heard some cockney's get away with Fackin 'ell before (blame their accents) but it's all just a load of fupping ballocks!

Censorship can be over the top. How we live and what we see should be dictated by our own common sense. Unfortunately global reserves of common sense seem to be dangerously low. Censorship is just a result of majority stupidity. Until the day comes when those people grow a brain we will just have to live with it.

Oh the old issue of stupid people making life harder.

Though I'm not against the age rating system, it is just an easy way to show parents what is in the games they're children want.

Parents should have a pretty good knowledge of what their kids can handle, hence why I was allowed to go out drinking at 16 and my sister isn't. But my parents have a degree of common sense, which seems to be rare.

There should be no censorship, sheltering people from what's really out there is not for their own good, because once this stuff like violence and sex starts to happen in their lives, they'll go into shock about it. Now I'm not saying they have to show sex instead of imply it, but they really need to stop censoring cussing on TV by changing the words:
Bad News Bears Before: "Bullshit!"
After: "Bullspit!"

DOOM Before: "Shut the fucking door!!!!!"
After: "Shut the front door"
I agree.
Have you seen the censored Hot Fuzz?

It's just...terrible.
You're not wrong... Peas and Rice!!!
"Shut the funk up", was actually kinda funny...

Original:"all i ask for is one fucking hour..."
Censored:"All i ask for is one, wanna kiss you..."

i found this quite odd

Unfortunately, the right-wing religious censors just screw everything up for everyone else. The censors are in the minority, and they are telling the majority what they can and cannot watch. They're controlling what your mind is exposed to, which should be the most basic of human rights.

I believe censorship is correct in all cases as I do not trust you to make form your own perspective on objective facts, and so will herd you through reactionary conditioning and careful partitioning of information to do what I believe you should.

Censorship only leads to the emphasis on the importance of censored words. Lets take an imaginary word: Qawdruth. It could mean anything. Sex, drugs, sex, excrement, whatever. Once it is censored, the popularity of its use explodes. If you keep it mainstream, no censorship, it dies down. People would be going around telling people to qawdruth off or calling people flaming sacks of qawdruth, whatever the case may be.

Now take for exaple that qawdruth is actually another word for the male sex organs. Therefore, it owuld be possible (since it is a physical object) to DISPLAY your qawdruth. Disgusting? Well, you ARE the only one with it hanging out, so don't you feel a little...chilly? Of course, they are also sensitive, so they are more comfortably clothed, but honestly, indecent exposure? WTQ! It's that person's problem when it smacks on something or gets really cold. In images, I'm pretty sure we would effectively destroy the porn industry if censorship gone.

We as a society tend to put emphasis on the words and images that are most offensive by censoring, but we as a species tend to use words and display images that are most emphasized to make ourselves heard. If people really paid attention in the media, and weren't power-hungry, maybe censorship would be eliminated. Sure, a self induced rough patch would happen, but you have to rip off the fucking bandaid sometime.

TL;DR Censorship fucking promotes what it censors.

Too true mate. The main reason why everyone knows Mortal Kombat, even your grandparents and lost amazon tribes, is because the censors made such a huge fuss over it. Same thing with Carmageddon, GTA et al.

I point to my earlier post in this thread. Mainly because nobody has mentioned it and gone on about how censorship is bad. Censorship isn't the issue here. Well, it is, but telling people their censoring things isn't going to help matters at all. We need to attack this logically. load our weapons.

First, lets stop with this "Video Games don't make Killers" talk. This statement is just as bad as "Killers are made by video games" because while it seems the more sensible of the two, nobody here has demonstrated any evidence on either argument. What we need is to do a study. We ask a Question, an OPEN question (ie, not one that has a Yes or No answer) like "What Effects Do Video Games Have on Children Aged 7-9 compared to those aged 13-17?" We do some experiments, find similar studies and present them. Tight controls, Tight regulations, double blind tests, lets do this properly.

I'm sorry, but all this talk about censorship isn't going to change squat. We need PROOF.

One of the PhD students at my uni who assisted the lecturer in my psychology research methods workshop actually was doing her thesis on this very subject- she was of the opinion that it did not cause violence. No idea how to get hold of said thesis unfortunately :-/

Censor nothing!

Either EVERYTHING is allowed to be funny, or NOTHING is.
That is an example of a glib response to a real issue that officially demonstrates your lack of understanding or consideration.

If I were to make a joke about a guy having sex with a baby that results in the kid vomiting blood, and then make an off hand comment about how he convinced his wife he ate Italian. That would be distasteful and inappropriate enough to cause a severe response in any victim of childhood sexual assault or anyone who has lost a child and so on. Depression and suicide are very real considerations. Imitation of this behaviour by college kids who think that anyone negatively affected by gags like this is "stupid ultimately leads to a severe decline in the quality of social discourse. And humour is generally step one to normalizing behavioral trends. After the baby sex jokes, those preteen model sites are good joke targets, and as such it becomes reasonable to have them around and "check out" to see what the big deal is, next thing you know people aren't making jokes about them anymore but there still around, you know, of course they are.

Argument one for censorship.

If you are on a plane and as a funny gag you whip out your laptop and pull up a full screen graphic of flashing red arabic text with a timer counting down, don't expect to not be arrested. That could cause panic, they'd have to land the plane anyway, even if you were just joking, because what would an actual bomber do if caught? and they do not have the resources to prove it one way or the other.

Argument two for censorship

In the United States and Canada and most of Europe and... well virtually everywhere it is illegal to create and distribute material that encourages violent response or presents racist ideology. Do I even need to explain? This is why all those skinhead groups have secret meetings or live on compounds. In germany, it is an arrestable offense to deny the holocaust by the same logic.

Argument three for censorship.

As for the ZP joke, do I think it should have been or he should be censored, no, obviously he was making a joke, it is what he does. The reason I found it a little edgier than I was comfortable with was because it didn't seem to fit into the whole dialogue. He could have made the same joke using a different example or he could have forgone the joke entirely with no thematic penalty. Because he did not mention anything about how his opinions were being compared to racism, he wasn't reviewing a WWII game, nor were there any real comments about fascist ideology throughout the game (if, for instance, he mentioned how the game's hero was so distinctly painted as a lover of humanity and everyone who goes against him is apparently pure evil then saying how he supported hitler would have been an ironic point ie. if you don't like this game you must be a nazi) none of that was there.

Result, discomfort over humour.
