Well, the Master chief has less personality and emotion than a cement block. he is the least interesting character i have ever come across, that of itself does not make for a bad character, but the way the fanboys treat him as bad-ass in hyper-condensed really puts me of the character.
Hey, you know who has even less personality then Master Chief? Gordon Freeman. Seriously, tell me I'm wrong. In fact, Freeman and Master Chief are almost identical in every way(Power-armored badasses who become symbols of hope to a downtrodden human race while conquering an alien menace alongside a tomboyish female sidekick), except MC has more lines of dialog. Like, 3 of them. Also, MC actually had a much more legitimate claim to the whole "symbol of hope" thing, since was actually the only soldier in a war for survival that could actually fight the enemy effectively. Freeman actually CAUSED the alien invasion in question, then disappeared for around 2 decades. Seriously, how did people even hear about him? He was nobody! I mean, what exactly did he DO pre-dissapearance to garner all that faith? Spectacularly fail to save the Earth? Yeah, that sounds like a real symbol of hope to me! Anywho, that's it for me. I have to kick a beehive, poke a bear, and maybe play with some fire.
*sigh* Gordon Freeman is supposed to be you, the player. He is a blank slate that you step into and are supposed to fill the role of as a super badass particle physicist gun-totting hero of mankind.
Not to nit pick, but that was the intent (valve didn't even wanna give him a face, but marketing wanted cool box art) of valve. IMO, I found it a lot more fun to play with the very mild role-play element of me being the hero then playing a predetermined character profile (like marcus fenix or Nathan fucking Drake). But hey, again, IMO.
OT: All of fucking Noble Team in Reach. Dear god above they sucked soooo horribly. Not even the developers wanted them around they killed 'em off so quick.
