Most hated? Otis from Deadrising. *in the middle of a boss fight* *RING RING! RING RING!* NO!
Oh fucking ay Yes! I hated him so much(that he qualifies as a disgrace) especially how he'd call(seemingly always at the worst moment) and want to chat or something and then when you have to hang up to avoid getting nommed or shot at he fucking calls you back just to berate you for being rude.
Also I also elect to put forth for consideration Link from Legend of Zelda, The Courier of Fallout New Vegas fame, and finally/most importantly: That God damned dog from Duck Hunt!

I'm actually rather curious about that. The Courier was more or less a blank slate, to be filled in by the player. How exactly is the Courier disgraceful, if it's up to players like you and I to craft the Courier's persona, behavior, and actions? Doesn't that mean, by extension, that we are a disgrace to gaming? Deep, man.

/repressed childhood memories.
/anger level rising.

The light gun kills the ducks, but no matter how many times I shoot, the dog just keeps laughing... it just keeps laughing... laughing...

After reading most of your responses, it seems that a lot of you are just picking annoying characters, but not necissarily characters that are a disgrace to gaming. For example, Tingle, or the whiny guy from KOTOR. They're SUPPOSED to be annoying; it fits their personalities and helps shape the game.

I think the character that is the biggest disgrace to gaming is Roman from GTA IV.

His ACTUAL character is okay, but the fact that he constantly calls you ALL THE TIME in game and asks you to go do things is fucking annoying... which would be okay if you didn't lose "points" for not actually going and doing the stuff with him. He is only good in the cutscenes. He would be a great character in a movie, but in a game, he is out of place; this ties into a bigger theme of grungy realism, making games into movies, and having the same annoyances in your escapism as in real life. When you're gaming you should not feel annoyed that you have to carry out the same chores that you do IRL, and that is exactly how the Roman makes me feel (along with some of the other characters that do this, but he is the most obvious one).

Chell and Gordon Freeman.

Come on guys, neither of them have a single line of dialog. Gordon I suppose has his "locker" in half life one but that's much less backstory than even master chief, and he's horrifically blank as well. I don't get why people worship these characters.

People love Gordon Freeman because he's a quiet nerd who cleans off his glasses, grabs his trusty crowbar, and rises to the occasion. All the quiet nerds who play video games love to pretend it's them peering through blood-smeared Coke bottle lenses and sweating their balls off in a giant tin can, saving the world and more importantly, implied love interest? NERDGASM!

As for Master Chief... I could be wrong... but...

I don't even know what that character was supposed to be. Seriously. She made me want to punch kittens.
*blinks* (again) Okay you guys are just baiting me now right? I mean, you saw the stuff about Hope and thought "hee hee man I'mma have FUN with this one!" right?

She (from my perspective) was supposed to be the "villian" that you come to realize is really not so different from yourself. The metaphoric equivalent of the adage "There but for the grace of god go I." I think she (and Fang) are meant to make us wonder about those we are taught or conditioned to believe are our enemies and what they are really like as people.

So with that, G'night George!
They could have done that with a less teeth grindingly irritating character.

Jar Jar Binks.
Wait, disgrace to gaming?
Still Jar Jar Binks.
I'm sure he's been in at least one game that he wasn't needed in.

Not to step on any toes, but most JRPG characters and all Nintendo let's-make-the-same-game-for-twenty-years characters excluding Samus (in the Prime series. She was a real atrocity in Other M). I hate them all for the same reason; they have no real personality. They're often flat, and not only flat, but one-sided, inconsistent, thick... and everything else I'd say is effectively a subset of what I've already listed.

My biggest grief, however, are the 'character quirks'. In almost all animes or mangas and Japanese-developed videogames and movies, the characters all have some individual, unique quirk that makes them different. The trouble is it's ALL that makes them different. I often see cookie-cutter characters slapped with some irrational and extremely strange fear or obsession, then put into a game, story, or movie like a finished product.

No, just because you hit somebody with a frying pan every time they express physical attraction towards you doesn't make you a deep character.

And I'm ranting, sorry. This is just a pet peeve.

Duke Nukem now, he was good back in the 90's but his character just does not work anymore. Kratos after the first God of War where his revenge quest started making very little sense anymore. And a certain Rosh Penin that I am sure has been mentioned in one of the previous posts.

That was my first though too.

Infamous 1 or 2?

I'll admit he was a prick in 2, but in 1 he was an endearing relatable person who, in a split second and stroke of sudden fate became the sole person who could preserve and protect the entirety of humanity.

But yeah, I wanted to kick him in the balls in the second game.
Gotta disagree, he was a pretty big douchebag in the first game. I found nothing endearing and certainly nothing relatable about him at all. He spent the first half of the game whining that his bitchy girlfriend was upset with him and letting her treat him like shit when he should have just kicked her ass to the curb (if the game developers wanted us to feel any kind of emotion about her that isn't "what a *****", they failed miserably). Then he spends the second half being upset about the double cross, despite the fact that the writing was so bad that it was painfully obvious that it was going to happen. And who cares anyway because that character was also a douchebag just like Cole and his girlfriend.

...Actually, I'd like to expand my answer. The entire cast of inFamous, not just Cole, are a disgrace to gaming.

Also, I'd like to nominate the entire case of Command and Conquer 4. Sadly, that even includes Kane. Yes, they even managed to screw Kane up in that game. It all stems from this stupid wife character they threw in to be the wife of you, the player. She pops up a few times and says "I love you" and "Be careful". That's it. There is no characterization there at all, she's just some random, moderately attractive woman that they keep tossing on screen while saying "CARE ABOUT HER SHE IS YOUR WIFE OMG!!!!!" Then...

She dies. And if you're on GDI, they keep trying to motivate you by talking about getting payback for your dead wife that you, the player, have absolutely no connection to and quite frankly don't really care that she died. And now I'm supposed to want to get NOD because they killed her. Uhm, yeah. Whatever. How about I get NOD because they're doing stuff that's probably evil. Yeah, that sounds like a better motivation. But no, everyone keeps reminding you of teh wifez.

And if you're on NOD, it's worse. Surprise, she's not dead! Kane saved her, and is holding her hostage to make sure you follow orders. He threatens to harm her if you don't obey. My reaction? Kill her, see if I care. Really, I can't believe you're trying to control me with this threat. It's pathetic.

So there it is. Two games with absolutely awful storytelling because they're full of obnoxious, unlikeable characters that the game apparently thinks I should care about because it assigns them titles like "main character's best friend" or "main character's wife" without doing any proper characterization. I could probably dig up other characters from other games too (Big from Sonic Adventure immediately shows up looking for his fucking frog), but I've spent too long writing this already.

Or pretty much all FF heroes XD outside of maybe Zidane.
I refuse to acknowledge your opinion as anything but a very silly exaggeration because you indirectly implied that Terra is an abomination to gaming.

That being said...I pick Vaan from FF12. The kid has no purpose or reason for being in his own game, that's...pathetic. I mean sure, there are other characters who may have weak characterization, or are painfully generic, or may just rub me the wrong way, but at least they all have a purpose in the games the exist in. Vaan may actually be the only video game character I truely hate.

lol I find it funny that so many people take the dislike of their liked characters so personally. Dudes! I like Nathan Drake and Sonic (in some incarnations) and heaps of people say they hate them but don't care anyway.

OT; I hate frigging Jack she is just a psychotic *****, even after her sad back story was revealed to me I still found her to be an utter *****.
