Most people say he is a creepy as fuck pedophile, but I just love him
^ Holy ASS, this. It also applies to Navi.

I think Tidus is pretty cool for a dead guy. And Vaan was a bit cool once he got a shirt.

Shinji Ikari from Neon Genesis Evangelion.
This.

I liked him as one of the most relatable characters I've seen in an anime.

Bolded - I completely agree with you right there on Vaan.

Although he did have a rather ironic line in Dissidia 012 when battling Cloud of Darkness.

Sometimes I feel like I'm the only guy who likes ClapTrap. How could I NOT?

Also, I was unaware that Raul (FO:NV) was underrated. I love that guy. Come on, he's voiced by Danny Trejo!

Takeo from COD zombies. he's awesome, but people hate him because he doesn't joke around. being quiet is better than being:
dumb (tank)
piss drunk (nikolai)
a psychopath (dr. richtofen)
and coach from l4d2. what's up with that?

Master Chief from Halo, I know he's a bit of a blank character, but he works well, and at the end of the day a character should be fun.
Same, I admit he's not the greatest character in gaming history but I don't recall him ever being advertized as such, I respect him in the role he plays.
That said, I much prefer the Arbiter who is, incidently, another character who gets waves of unjust hate for no fair reason.

Also I like Ashley from Mass Effect. Screw what the haters say, she's my favorite gal in the whole damn series.

Honestly?

Almost everybody hates him on this website. On a positive Sonic thread? Most of the replies will be like "yeah, it really looks good, can't wait to play it!" and then every other comment there is this prick saying "NOPE BECAUSE SONIC IS DEAD AND ALL HIS GAMES SUCK BECAUSE THEY AREN'T LIKE THE GENESIS GAMES HERP DERP"

Honestly, people, it gets old really quick. If you don't like Sonic anymore, good for you. There's no reason for you to go on a thread filled with Sonic fans and denominate him. You most likely have better things to do with your time.

Wow..took the words out of my mouth. I don't see why everyone seems to prefer Tali.

Another potentially good character is Cortana/Dr. Halsey, if they stopped doing those irritating Cortana moments like in Halo 3. Most characters in Halo do need a lot more development, though.

Also, Alistair from DA:O. I know he does have a lot of fans, but they're mostly female. Any guy I've spoken to doesn't like him. He was a character written to appeal to women I think - and I am one, so it worked xD
I wasn't aware Alistair was disliked. I thought Alistair was a total bro, and his banter with Morrigan was great.
Heh, it may just be the guys I'm friends with. None of them like him.

I don't know why everyone I know of and those I encounter on the internet don't like Tidus from Final Fantasy Ten. People on the internet and real-life tend to say or portray him as either being overly girly in comparison with other Final Fantasy protagonists, whiny, not as well characterised and various what nots that most tend to say about most FF game protagonist anyway.

I feel that he is a nice change away from the 'angsty', 'dark' and 'brooding' main protagonist that most Final Fantasy and Japanese role playing games tend to have like Squall Leonhart, Neku Sakuraba and etcetera. He's funny, he's happy and throughout the game, he brings a smile to my face since he's so upbeat and quite refreshing, since I played a lot of Final Fantasy games.

I admit, he does have daddy issues but I think that's what makes him likeable and 'real' because he's back story can be easily related to a player who may have some of the same issues. I can't say the same for Cloud and Squall and to some extent Zidane (although he's my favourite character too) because they all have back stories that are more fantasy based (a super-powered soldier, an orphan mercenary whose somewhat an asshole to everyone and a circus thief) that I see commonly in fantasy books. Tidus is a celebrity sportsman that plays water polo underwater. For me that's new, refreshing and rather interesting for a fantasy protagonist to be and made me more curious as to how they'll develop such a 'normal' character in a fantasy game where they carry swords that are bigger then themselves and can summon magical creatures.

So for me, that was the hook and the main reason that I liked Final Fantasy Ten. His rather 'realistic' characterisation helped immersed me into the game that is very well known to be cinematic and cut-scenes heavy and almost had me teary-eyed in the end with his 'death'. (although they ruined that by reviving him in X-2 -shakes fist- CURSE YOU SQUARE ENIX!!)

TL:DR? - He's more real and easier to relate to that other FF protagonists.
And I thought I was the only one who thought like that!

Also, I like Anders in Dragon Age 2, so I seem to be in a very, very small minority.
I'm sorry, what? Anders wasn't in Dragon Age 2, sir! Surely this is a jest?

A good portion of the characters in FFXIII, especially Fang and Sazh. Useful fighters as well as interesting designs.
