EU in my opinion is pretty mediocre entirely, I personally wouldn't consider any of it canon if I were the creator. But of course, Lucas has final say. And surely he wouldn't make a monumental mistake with his own franchise right?

That last bit was sarcasm.

Anyway, most of the books were pretty meh. There were a few really great books, but most of the EU is just pulp used to pander to the devout star wars fanatics.

The only stories I'd consider above average was Timothy Zahn's trilogy covering Grand Admiral Thrawn's nearly succesful attempt to topple the New Republic. Some of the best writing of all the star wars books, and managed to keep most of the characters true to what we saw in the films, where as other books bastardize them so badly all we recognize at the end is their names. I'd highly recommend it to anyone who wants to read some really damn good fan fiction.

They are, as far as I know. It happens in the first "New Jedi Order" book Vector Prime by R.A. Salvatore. I was upset when I first read it, but then I realized that he had to die eventually, and death-by-moon is about as epic a way as you can go.
