I have a question. How did the soldier even expect to get up to the ship in the first place, in time?

Great trailer though, hardly extended.

Wow, that was amazingly done. Powerful, indeed. I'm even more excited to play it now. The campaign is actually more important to me than anything else, and I haven't said that about a Halo game since I fished the original out of a bargain bin a year ago and finally played it.

I'm definitely going to remember these shorts for any future "are games art?" debates I get myself into.

Why do the commercials have to be so much more touching then the actual games?
Mostly because people will be drawn in by the 30 seconds of emotion in the trailer, but they'll stay for the ridiculous fun. If Halo was actually like this all the time, I don't think it'd be very popular. People would just stick to COD or Gears, who already do grittier experiences perfectly well.

Personally I like these trailers for a different reason. I think the reason why Halo is so popular is because everything always feels so bloody epic, even if you're just messing about with friends on multiplayer. So they make these trailers, which are cinematic but not narrative-driven, because they want the viewer to fill in the blanks. They want the viewer not to say I want to see that guy, but I want to be that guy. They tell the viewer, this is how you could play Reach.

Because as players of the Halo series, we've all been there. We've been that guy that's got the flag all the way to the front gate but gets taken out, and we've stared sadly, but proudly, as one of our comrades picks it up from our prone body and delivers it the rest of the way. This trailer has very cleverly taken our gameplay experiences and made it seem to mean more than it really does. And we all fantasise that our battles on Halo mean something every time we jump in.

Plus I can't blame Bungie/Microsoft for getting a little emotional with their farewell title.

Ever since the Battle of Reach was first mentioned in the instruction manual to Halo: Combat Evolved, we've known how it ended: Reach falls. When the player joins Noble Team next week, they're joining a lost cause - the planet falls, the Covenant win, and the Spartans die.
Thanks dickhole. We havent all read the books you know. I knew Reach fell but the spartans could of survived.

A-grade reporting there buddy
-Statute of limitations on these things, pal.
-You know in the games that Chief is the last Spartan.
-If you haven't played a Halo game before, why are you interested in Reach?
-Calling staff "dickhole" is a no-no.
-Could have.
Well technicaly Master Chief isn't the last spartan but if you are refering to the games and no the books then he seems like he is but really isnt.

Say what you will about the game (Fanboyism in check) but you have to admit they are masters at live action videos and marketing...

So epic. Had a chill down my spine...now the release just needs to get here!
Absolutely. These are some of the best trailers I've ever seen for anything, and definitely the greatest videogame adverts since the hilarious 'life's short, play more' ad for the original Xbox. They really are perfectly crafted and, most importantly, emphasise the fact that Reach has an excellent single player story which multiplayer addicts would be fools to overlook (not that I won't spend the next 4 months playing this online whilst ignoring my uni work)

That trailer was ok. It looked pretty good but it's not epic it's just a guy running and then a bomb going off. I've seen more interesting things.

It takes a special chemistry of players to really reach that pinnacle moment of awesome in a game. Too many lack the imagination or drive to really immerse themselves.
I believe it is possible to reach that pinnacle though. But once you reach it, you will never want to let it go.
I've been there. You will remember.

That trailer was surprisingly awesome... I don't have a 360 anymore, so I just have to watch from the other side of the fence as I did since the first Halo... I still don't regret selling the 360, but it just makes me want to play it, not to own it.

Hopefully we'll see a crappy port on the PC in the next 3 or 4 years AFTER they release Halo 3 and ODST... And I would still play it.

Damn it! They are just like the Gears of wars trailers. Just want me to buy them and play them.
Indeed, as much as I love both series, I am always slightly disappointing that they never feel as atmospheric or deep when it comes to the actual games.

The sad thing is that they really could be.

Cool Commercial but once again. WTF DOES IT SAY ABOUT THE GAME!?. Nothing. I don't care how amazing a commercial is for a game it should show gameplay of the game. If people buy it on these commercials alone then they are just sheep who will buy anything the masses buy because its shiny. Of course this could be said about every game ever lol.
I actually disagree entirely. I think that a trailer that is representative of some portion of a game - in this case, an emotion and the sense that you're being asked to fight a losing battle - is all well and dandy.

This is something we've learned in doing video supplements for our reviews, actually. A lot of times something that's fun to play isn't necessarily fun to watch. Think about how you actually play a FPS - you're looking all over the place, rarely staying in any one position for long lest you get ambushed, etc. To somebody WATCHING, not controlling, it'd be nigh-impossible to keep up with, especially if they're not fans of the series.

I don't want to watch someone clicking all over a map in a StarCraft commercial, especially not out of context.

That's quite something that is, I hope to goodness that when a Halo film does roll around (and it will sooner or later) the boys and girls of Bungie are somewhere very high up the creative control list.

Well, it does actually say quite a lot about the game. Considering we already know what the actual game looks like (that's what we have screenshots and gameplay footage for after all), this gives them the opportunity to do something a bit more dramatic with the trailer. It's easy to just see the Halo games as all brightly coloured laser fire zipping around all over the place, but trailers like these help to add a bit more reality to the situation. While I don't think this one works quite as well as the ODST live action trailer, it's still a worthy addition. Gameplay is all well and fine, but it doesn't always make the best advert. Especially considering the frequency with which games ads appear on cinema screens these days. While some games fare better than others, when displayed on the large screen of your local cinema, a snappily designed trailer like this will be better equipped to hold its own alongside the film trailers than some gameplay footage will.

Here's hoping Bungie can continue to pull off similar feats with whatever it is they will be working on next.
