I'm pretty sure more people than just China have suffered from forced relocation. Really its just a bit short sighted for one blogger to claim that only the Chinese can identify with forced relocation.

Wouldn't the government not want to ban it anyway to prevent drawing even more attention and try and at least deny the parallels, even if they are there.
exactly what i was thinking. i was like "uh..wtf? how short sighted and ignorant are you?" if i remember right, someone correct me if im wrong, wasn't it based off of the american indians being relocated?

and i agree on part two, banning it is just bringing even more attention to it, since its not a worldwide sighting now and once again china is frowned upon
I agree with the sentiment that the poor Chinese are not the only people on Earth who know what it feels liked to be forcibly relocated cough* Palestinians cough* but considering that they are probably going to loose Google their ignorance is understandable.

This doesn't suprise me, China censors anything that they think might cause people to re think the fact that they're being told how to live.

Not very fair, but understandable for the Chinese government anyway.

And let it be known that Hitler was not a socialist and very much a capitalist.

At least Korea is safe. After all, they don't really care. They just watch.

Ot: Their loss but I can see why.

Funny thing is, the murder of people is not a part of any system this is actually Socialist, funny thing, that.

Of course, I get this feeling you're trolling, so whatever.

Actually, they could more accurately be discribed as "Socialist dictatorships", where the dictatorship part is the problem, not the Socialism.

Also, there is a difference between National Socialism and Socialism.

Native Americans. We aren't "Indians" and calling us that is short sighted and ignorant. :p
holy shitttt, when i was typing that out i said "Native americans" in my head, and for some reason it typed that out instead, I feel like such a dumbass now, my previous post now has no credibility at all haha

thank you for correcting me, i sincerely feel bad about that now
lol

No real offense taken, just couldn't resist pointing out the irony in your statement there. :)
haha very true, props to you for noticing and pointing it out

*ahem* as a native american...... do you wish you had the cool hair flash drive so you could connect with animals and the land?!?!

odd and random question, just curious.

Once again, China's response to anything that supposedly suggests to their people that life isn't absolutely hunky-dory (or reminds them that they're living in a vicious police state and life for millions is a gigantic pile of crap) is to ban it outright. Absolutely bloody typical.

Apparently they banned Pochahontas there too. Anyway, I want to hear more about this Confucious movie, that sounds fascinating.

That's sad that the government has to ban a film that scares them, though it's normally against my principal, I support the bootlegging of Avatar by the Chinese. More power to them, screw the movie banning government.

China Bans Avatar

China has banned James Cameron's blockbuster Avatar due to concerns over the film's themes of eviction and relocation.

In case you haven't heard, James Cameron's sci-fi romance epic Avatar is very, very popular [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/97199-Avatar-Makes-Billion-in-Record-Time], smashing record after record on its way to challenge even mighty Titanic as the highest-grossing film of all time (though a #2 spot isn't really all that bad, either). The story may be a cliche, but the stunning visuals and imagery have helped it resonate with moviegoers across the world in a way few films do, but the movie resonated with audiences in China in a very unique way - a way that has gotten the movie banned from theaters in the world's most populous country.

Amidst concerns that Avatar's themes of forced eviction and relocation in order to support industry would spur social unrest, the state-run China Film Group ordered Avatar pulled from the nation's 1,628 2D screens, effective this Saturday, January 23rd. The film's banning would also help theaters make room for a biopic of the famous philosopher Confucius starring Chow Yun-Fat - a film more in line with the values espoused by the nation's government.

While Avatar will remain playing on China's 900 3D screens until the planned end of the run at the end of February, 3D-equipped theaters are much harder to come by in the Chinese mainland, making this an effective blanket ban, writes ICM [http://news.icm.ac.uk/business/china-bans-avatar-fearing-social-backlash/5326/].

The ban comes in reaction to many Chinese moviegoers, who viewed the forcible relocation of the Na'vi people on the planet Pandora as an allegory for an experience suffered by many Chinese in the country's crowded cities: The government's Chengguan [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chengguan] evicts people from smaller homes that their families have lived in for generations in order to build commercial and industrial high-rises for the sake of the country's economic development.

Many outspoken social critics and bloggers noted the parallel between the situations faced by the blue-skinned Na'vi and inner-city Chinese living in old-fashioned neighborhoods. In the China Daily, a writer named Huang Hang wrote that "the film struck a chord with Chinese audiences and created nothing less than a social phenomenon. Why? All the forced removal of old neighbourhoods in China makes us the only earthlings today who can really feel the pain of the Na'vi."

These sentiments were echoed by popular Chinese blogger Han Han, who added that "For audiences in other countries, such brutal eviction is something outside their imagining. It could only take place on another planet or in China."

"Social phenomenon" seems an apt way to describe it, given the long lines for the film seen in Shanghai [http://www.chinasmack.com/stories/avatar-movie-chinese-reactions-long-lines-shanghai/] - have you seen photos of people camping out for Avatar in any other country? I sure haven't. Indeed, the success of Avatar may have earned it some enmity in the Chinese government all on its own, earning 300 million RMB ($40 million) in its first eight days of release - an embarrassing amount of money for local filmmakers.

Fortunately, China being China, it won't be so easy to stamp out the film once and for all - pirated DVDs of the film are already on streets, meaning that those who identify with the situation on Pandora can still experience it for themselves.

(Thanks [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.169310], Myrrath!)

WOW. People in China don't know much about the outside world, do they? There are plenty of people in Africa and Latin America who have to put up with the same crap. For crying out loud, Mexico is doing the SAME DAMN THING RIGHT NOW to the Native American tribes in Mexico. It seems like the people in China seem to that China and America are the only countries on the damn planet.

Sorry, I haven't got anything against the Chinese people in general...but both of the quoted people seemed to not understand that there is lots of other problem areas in the world.

Uhh, Hitler was a fascist. Not a socialist. They're similar overall, but they're on the opposite ends of the spectrum.

Otherwise, I can sort of agree that Communism (not so much Socialism, that one's all right) is a very bad thing. If the world was run by robots, then it would work. But so long as it's run by easily corruptable people, it won't.

EDIT: Hiccup there, he is in fact Socialist. But by geez he'd be Fascist by any other name.

If you fear a fantasy adventure movie about 10' tall, blue... uhhhh ...penis tailed cat people might ignite the revolution, perhaps you should look inward for the problem, not ban the movie thus proving your regime is an obscenely oppressive human rights abusing nightmare of Orwellian proportions.

Sorry I forgot the topic. We can only act indignatly towards one atrocity at a time perhaps the next thread can be about Mayans in Chiapas or aliens in Johannesburg
