Those of you making these "natural-selection" and "Darwinism" comments and laughing at this man's death, I'm not sure I can even call you human-beings any more. These are vile, despicable, reprehensible attitudes and represent the absolute worst component of the gaming community, in my opinion. It is these kinds of attitudes that are the reason the gaming community is not taken seriously by the rest of the world. Why should others have respect for you when you show no respect for others? You may think you're just being funny, but you're not realizing how seriously others may look upon the matter.

He died doing what he loved. Better that than the way many people go coughing their lungs out in a hospital bed praying that someone unplugs their life support.

While obviously that is crazy, I'd be willing to bet he had some seriously depressing shit going on at the time and that this was, in fact, a suicide.

I bet the Chinese government gets blamed for human rights abuse for not regulating their gaming industry *rolls eyes*.

Conspiracy theory time: no sensible person would do such a thing, he was either mentally ill, or was killed bu the corrupt regime who seeks justification to impose control under the guise of care for their citizens. Why doesn't this stuff happen in the west?
I'm with you here. I'm very suspicious of these stories. They never seem to happen in the West. Rather, they always seem to happen in countries looking for excuses to try and shut down or limit their populace's freedom of assembly. And also, rather mysteriously, these stories never seem to be verified. We never hear anything about coroner's reports or follow up. And the details are always very sketchy--people are always unnamed. Where are the toxicology results?

Also, if staying up three days in a row in front of a monitor actually killed people...then US grad students would be dying left and right during their doctoral qualifying exams. During finals and midterms we'd have students dying in droves. Workaholics who work in front of computer terminals would be dying left and right.

When I was in the Army major sleep deprivation also happened. And we weren't dying. Heck I'm 38...not a young 18 year old full of vim and vigor and I just pulled an all nighter last night doing course prep in front of my computer...and I'm not dead.

Maybe these mysterious deaths (if they've happened at all) are drug overdoses? But staying up for three days doesn't kill a person. So. What actually is going on?

That's it: Internet Cafes need to become more coffee-shop-like and make people periodically buy food in order for them to stay.

I mean, really. Forget the cerfew, just make legal requirements for eating and using the restroom. That alone would people think more clearly.

Don't these cafes serve things like food and water? And why don't they have limits? Maybe 24/7 internet cafes isn't such a good idea.

He probably tried to hold the poop for just five minutes longer the whole three days until it came out through his brain. Or maybe a blood clot from his butt.

Someone who plays for so long is just addicted, not a real gamer.

I notice how beyond the 12-hour mark I start to get tired and not enjoy games as much. Since I'm an actual gamer I prefer to stop a marathon short than to risk my enjoyment of the game by playing it so tired that I'm doing stupid things and not having the experience I could have if I wasn't starving and sleep-deprived.

I'm betting either that the game had him or addicted and/or the Cafe didn't help him at all.

It's a deadly combination if you ask me and I'd love to see someone from here go and play those damn MMOs >.>

This isn't the first 'report' of someone dieing due to gaming, and it won't be the last. I still don't believe that gaming alone was the cause. The best theory is either A) over-use of stimulants so they could stay awake and keep the twitch reflex strong, or B) ignoring basic bodily functions, or C) the person had an existing medical condition such as a heart problem or blood clot (probably from spending so much time previously without moving)

Did the cafe ever close at night and the guy simply mooch wireless connection from his car? Did he ever get up to move during those three days even to use the bathroom? Did he down more energy drinks than is healthy? And, most importantly, did anyone get his stuff?

Something tells me that the government won't give any answers to anything and simply say "Games killed him, so now we're going to limit how much/what kinda of games are allowed." which will get lots of rage from within the country and lots of luls from the outside.

Devil's advocate:
Maybe game makers should consider taking steps to consider how games impact a person. Addiction is something some games were designed for, even World of Snorecraft developers admitted they made aspects of their game purposefully addictive and that adding achievements was a measure meant to further make these games addictive. I know Arena Net has a warning message about time spent playing, but a step further wouldn't hurt.

MMOs, particularly, need a semblance of structured earmarking of some kind; a moment in the game where a person can actually feel as though they've accomplished more than simply preparing to accomplish something that prepares them to accomplish something else and so on.

If you ignore that they purposefully manipulate the brain with a number of proven psychological cues, you're ignoring what they themselves have freely admitted.

</end devil's advocate>
