Man, I'm glad my brain has developed a self-defense mechanism to shut itself off to avoid damage anytime it catches phrases like the one above. Triggers on phrases that never end well, such as "Christian conservative", "state-run", "Fox", "MSNBC", "CNN", "Eric Estavillo" and "Jack Thompson", among others.

Oh China you are always good for a laugh. I'm surprised they don't just come out and ban video games if they think they're such a problem.

That doesn't specifically mean Video games are the problem, TV is used by tons of people, Video games are just another form of entertainment which LOADS of people use.

80% of Chinese inmates have become murderers due to online games...

Therefore, 80% of China has online gaming capability?

America doesn't have that yet...Hell, Japan doesn't have that ability and they're at the forefront of online gaming.

What? No?

80% of prisoners doesn't equate to 80% of the population.

OT: It's China, we trust their government on what exactly?

Oh yes, fuck all.

So...how many of the Chinese population have played online games? Going by the figures here [http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/rds/pdfs2/r188.pdf], China has 1.47 million people in prison. That makes, say, 1 million gamers in Chinese Prisons.

China has systematically checked through the background of these 1 million gamers.(Which we know, because we can trust a Government that blocks its own critics) Which are a small part of it's 1,321 million population. In fact, that's just over 0.1% of its population.

Strange, that's an awfully small amount of people playing games given that the worldwide approximation is 1 billion against the world's 6.6 billion people; we'd be expecting 18% (roughly) to be gamers.

So, if we have proof positive that these 80% of criminals are gamers, that still only makes 6% of gamers into criminals.

But wait! If all of the evil killer gamers are in prison, what about all the kids at the internet addiction camps? If gaming makes them evil, they should be in prison. And if it doesn't, why are they in camps?

I don't know about you, but I smell a modicum of untruth here.

The communist propaganda machine is right, all the Chinese gamers should be restricted to traditional communist activities; Hating anyone with more freedoms than you, living in fear of being branded an enemy of the state, and running over peaceful demonstrators in a tank.

Even if 80% of the criminals did play videogames, doesnt 80% of china play videogames. 0_0.

O.T. Sorry for the steriotype, it had to be done.

But either way, the fact that that information came from ONE prision, well that kinda defeats the purpose of the study since these things have to be done on a wide range of criminals.

so probably 80% of all the people in china play games. its like saying 80% percent of chinese prisoners watched the news, and used chop sticks when they were eating. a gaming console is becoming a regular household items like fridges and tvs. but you dont see them blaiming it on that now do they

Yeah sure, and I'm the queen of Antiva.
Even if china is telling the truth and the statistics are correct nobody will belive them. But of course when your media is based on lies and altering the past, changing the present isn't such a big deal.

I understand why they don't like online games, but I thought China would be happy to have a new source of money.

To paraphrase Charles Manson at one of his parole hearings:

"Believe me, if us gamers started murdering people... there'd be none of ya left."

[small]...maybe Charles Manson isn't the best choice to portray gamers. But I'm lazy and don't want to retype this post, so....[/small]

Well that is messed up, so easy to prove it a statistic pulled out of their ass. Just because they are or were gamers doesn't mean that video games caused or motivated their crimes.
