I'll tell you what, let's all bash the movie huh? When the fuck have movies made from novels ever been decent? Some of the best books I've read have been cinemised, which is usually followed by cries of "OMGZ!!11! DIS IZ SHITTT!" (A recent example- The Golden Compass. Or as it's properly called- The Northern Lights). Yeah, the movie is shit. So read the books, then make your mind up.
I'm a guy, I've read the first 3 books (borrowing the fourth soon) and they're actually *not that bad*. Ok, I also can't see why Edward gets hyped up so much- the guy's a douche half the time, but hey.
More to the point, here's an interesting social investigation- Compare Darren Shan's Vampire novels to Ms. Meyer's series. Both feature teenagers experiencing vampirism, but whilst Darren Shan is targetting males (and so the book features gore, fights and the "oh no I can't be with humans" is brushed over), the Twilight series minimizes the gore and fights, instead FOCUSING on the humanity of it.
A summary:
Movies of Books are shit. End of.
Edward Cullen is just as flawed as the rest of us guys, but as love is blind and the narrative is through the eyes of someone who is in love with him, we see little of these.
Guys- Read the novel. Even if you just borrow it, I'd say it's worth a read.
Girls- Stop having a go at guys staring at Ms. Jolie's assets if you're gonna drool over Edward.
That is all.
And for the record- yes, I am very happily straight.
[edit] and suddenly I feel the need to comment...

I think it's because these girl who haven't read a book that they weren't force to ever feel like they accomplished some big feat and thing that Twilight is a pinnacle of literary mastery. Despite the fact that It's a complete rip off with size eighteen font and the fact that it's a hardback make it ridiculously expensive. And these girls and boys, thinking that they've read some huge book despite its grandma size font and ridiculous margin feel that they are now scholars who have the right to piss on everybody else.
Sorry dude, I have to disagree. Now, I admit that the books aren't any Subtle Knife or Angels+Demons, but I can't see how it "forces" anyone to feel that. It's a book that is written well in some parts, not so well in others.
Oh no! It's a hardback!! Guess what? They invented these things called softbacks- quite a bit cheaper, which I understand was your gripe here. The font size wasn't anything noticably larger or smaller than standard, or at least I didn't pick up on it.
And finally, the assumption that we feel that we're scholars for finishing the book? Nah, we're just better informed to talk about it, on account of not just having watched a screen for three hours. Scholars are people who are better informed and more aware of the full subject that they are talking about, so in a way you're right.
