Wow, After the third game in a trilogy is released it seems the leaders/faces of the developer leave.

God of War > David Jaffe
Mass Effect > The Docs
Gears of War > Cliffy B

Not strictly the last game they worked on at the Developer, but within a year they seem to leave.

Edit:

Also
Modern Warfare > Robert Bowling (although MW has never been labelled as Trilogy).

To me, Cliff was pretty much the face of Epic. It's so weird to see him leave them.
I feel the same way. That company's just lost a whole lot of personality in the public eye.
Same here. Whenever I think about Epic, I imagine him. He certainly is a big loss for Epic.
I really wonder now what he's going to do after the break.

I guess he didn't want to leave in an EPIC way!

OT: He was a big name in the industry, best of luck to him.

Played Gears of War and enjoyed it, so much more he could do...

Played Unreal and Unreal Tournament like crazy as a kid, and still do now actually. Thanks for the memories.

But Jaffe left after the first God of War game...

Well, considering that many of my favorite games were made using the Unreal Engine (including the Unreal series itself), I wish him the best of luck for whatever he decides to do next.

I really, really wanted that to say "so long and thanks for all the fish".

Maybe if i just...twist that...swap the cables...
yup, here we go:

Anyways, it's sad to see him go. I was never a big fan of his, but it's just one of those things were he's always been there, and it'll be weird without him. Best of luck to him on what he does next.
You beat me to the punch. I actually read the original line as "thanks for all the fish".

OT: Well, that's... strange. To say the least. Clicking on this, I almost thought it was going to be a joke thread in Off-Topic or something. It'll be interesting to see where Epic goes without Cliffy B.

Your endearing douchebaggery will be missed, CliffyB. I wish you well on your future projects.

He's such a charismatic guy, I'd hate to be the person that proceeds him at Epic.

Captcha: What George Washington's first name?

Hmm...

Awww...it's actually really sad to see him go. He was a huge personality for the gaming business and it'll be a while before we have someone around like him again I feel. =/
Indeed. I'll really miss the entertaining commentary he's prone to provide.

But... so long, and have another fish!

So... does this mean Unreal Tournament is coming back?

Please?

Seriously though, fuck this guy. I've always considered him this generation's John Romero. Hearing about his departure on top of Peter Molyneux's slow fade into obscurity means that Christmas came early for me. Good riddance.

Except, you know, this guy made games that some people actually like. I don't think Cliffy ever had a Daikatana incident.

We'll miss you bro. Good luck in all you do.

Perhaps not specifically, no. Having said that Cliff, like Romero, never stopped at a chance to thrust himself in the spotlight like some kind of game developer socialite. There's such a thing as being in tune and in contact with your player base, and then there's being an shameless attention whore.

Although I'm not sure what's comparatively worse: Romero's hilarious little oopsie with Diakatana, or Cliff kicking UT and it's fanbase through the front doors of Epic as quickly as he could so his new girlfriend, Gears of War, wouldn't get jealous.

"best known for his work on the Gears of War franchise"

Umm...
What about the Unreal games? Those were kind of a big deal.

I still remember getting my ass kicked on DM-Hyperblast in Unreal Tournament. Good times.

Cliffy was a hell of a developer, but it seemed like he had grown disenfranchised with his work and the industry in all the interviews he made. Maybe he can start up another studio after taking some time off.

God the nastiness of some people about this is fucking infuriating.

The guy helped make some highly acclaimed games that a lot of people enjoyed and was a face of the industry. One who really valued the fan interaction. A trait you'd all be crying about if Gabe Newell left Valve.
