Cliff Bleszinski Wants to Return to His PC-Based Deathmatch Roots

Cliff: "A lot of these kids playing Call of Duty- I don't think they know what a proper arena shooter is."

Back in the day, legendary designer Cliff Bleszinski made his name working on adrenaline-soaked games like Unreal Tournament. While his later work on the Gears of War franchise slowed things down by introducing chest-high walls, he now wants to get back to his roots and make a kick-ass PC arena shooter, according to an interview on an episode of the [a href=http://www.deathsquad.tv/pointless-41/]Pointless Podcast.[/a]

"I have a slide deck, I have a pitch, I have concept art, I know pretty much what I want to do," Bleszinski said. "It will be a PC experience that will hearken back to a certain type of game that we cut our teeth on." Later on, he stated that this mystery game kicking around in the back of his mind is a "first-person shooter. It's in my DNA." Apparently he really wants to reset the clock on AAA games, stating that "I don't ever want to make a game that has a cutscene or a scripted sequence in it ever again."

Bleszinski [a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/119936-Cliff-Bleszinski-Leaves-Epic-Games]left Epic[/a] last year to strike out on his own. While he says that the game he has in mind isn't indie sized, he wouldn't go back to Epic either. "What I want to do is something that is familiar, yet different. I don't want to work with the old guard, per se... The last thing I need is some marketing guy saying, 'Well, traditionally this doesn't sell well'... They're all rearward-looking, and it just drives me f****** bats***." Perhaps the fickle gods of Kickstarter might be willing to patron this potential passion project?

This sounds great. Cliffy has a nice noggin' full of ideas.

Dammit I wish I could give him concept art ideas. My career wants to get me there.

Apparently he wants to reset the clock on everything he said about PC gamers being pirates and whiners, too.

In his mind, we won't remember all the really dickish things he has said about PC gamers in hopes that we will just throw money at him for what will probably be 'not-unreal but really is'.

Guess when the money starts to run out from being a paid shill of Microsoft... you'll do anything.

HAH!

Best of luck of luck to him, but I personally wouldn't buy into his pet project if it turned up on Kickstarter.

Maybe he's hoping bitching about the environment he created will win over the PC pirates and whiners.

I mean, with the guy behind Gears saying stuff like ""A lot of these kids playing Call of Duty- I don't think they know what a proper arena shooter is," he's gotta be hoping we didn't notice his hand in the dudebro shooter genre.

Funny coming from the guy who made cover-based third-person shooters popular.

Just the other day I was wistfully thinking back to the good old times of blasting away in the original UT. I'd be willing to consider forgiving Cliffy for all the mean and horrible things he said about me and mine (not that I'm whining or anything..) and what he's done for the dudebro movement if it meant I got another kick-ass old-school arena FPS. It's just not quite the same without a Flak Cannon.

Or I suppose I could take the arena FPS shooty wahay fun and still hold a grudge[footnote]Name a bunch of noob bots "Cliffy Hurrdy Derp" and then blast fuck out of them..[/footnote]. One or t'other.

If he goes back to Unreal Tournament 2004 style gameplay I'm all over this like a fat man over a McDonald's counter.

@all the Blezinski haters: Have any of you actually fully read all of what he's saying? Or did you all just read some headlines and then jump to conclusions?

For starters, read this all the way [http://dudehugespeaks.tumblr.com/post/53457606850/brutal-honest-thoughts-on-this-whole-debacle] and then tell me that he doesn't know what he's talking about.

OT: Thank goodness. Unreal fans have been screaming for a good sequel to UT for a while now since UT3 was lackluster to say the least.

Unreal Tournament 2014 or whatever year it gets released? Hell yes. I haven't enjoyed a multiplayer shooter since UT2004, so please please please make it happen.

I keep telling people, never doubt a developer as smart as him just because he "made Gears of War"

And the point is? He (his team) popularized a "new" gameplay style that wasnt all that much present and therefore its bad? Saying Call of Duty being a twitch shooter with a lot of assists like killstreaks and easy to use weapons not being a proper arena shooter is wrong how?

I know the Escapist here isnt very fond of Cliffy B but do you guys have to stomp him every time he says something?

Yep. And you know what? I actually liked GoW3. And I'm hardly a "dudebro." Games are made with a particular purpose and/or theme in mind. Gears of War specialized in cover-based combat and it did it remarkably well. I guess the only game I really didn't agree with that he made was UT3. Way too consolized. But that was just one game. You could also say UT2003 as well but they swooped in and saved a good majority of it with UT2004 so no harm done.

yeah, well I wonder whether all those PC gamers he offended will be willing to give him money for his dream project. Epic games was always about the tech for me, if Bleszinski wants to make his game I doubt it will sell well without the support of UE4 or any other expensive engine. My point being, if he wants to make a rad PC game he must be willing to push some visual boundaries and I doubt he will find the support for that, not because he is a bad developer or something but simply because the market is console oriented at the moment.

Finally Cliffy, something I think we can agree on. If you make this game with bot support and aim to release it DRM on gog or whatever ( DRM free for LAN and instant action of course) then I will full hardheartedly support you to make this game.
