First find out about the positions of all military bases on the planet that you can find out.
Second, destroy all satelites, crippling communications.
Third, orbitally bombard the military bases(if you don't have the technology for that, drop some large rocks from orbit to destroy them).
Fourth, send troops to all major cities on the planet, especially capital cities and try to force government to surrender.
Fifth, demonstrate your will to any and all who rise up through public executions of rebels. At the same time, try to be very kind to all who cooperate so that they see no reason to fight.

I like this, I think it just might work. It kinda reminds of Live Free or Die Hard, which leads me to my next contribution. What if along with taking out the power, first infiltrated our global ecomony and arfed things up? This would create all sorts of problems that would potentially make an invasion easier.
Attacking the global economy would make things easier, but, tracking the economy, let alone successfully manipulating it would take a very, very long time, yes it would be worth it, but then you have to consider the motivations for dominating the Earth, and this becomes a whole lot deeper than the OP intended.
I am the OP.
Oh, well, this is rather embarrassing. *insert distraction here*

Then I will elaborate, if the motivation is simply domination for expansion and none other, then manipulating the global economy would be more than worth the time and effort even if it changes the initial phase to 10 years in length, however it would include even more investment as Earths economy would be very different so cosmetic surgery would be required followed by a excellent Earth financial education, university then stock exchange apprenticeship, however, long term would reduce casualties and make occupation easier. However, if it's because they are running drastically out of resources, which as a futuristic race, they might be, the urgency to find new resources and start to generate them into their own economy would require a much shorter initial phase, where two years, where stated as being a minimum, would also be very close to the maximum. However if that is the situation one would also have to be careful of renegades, take to long they might do something about it themselves.

I think way too much about these things.
That's alright, and hey, that's exactly the kind of person I was looking for.

Looking for? For what? Should I be afraid of being taken away or for planning a actual alien invasion?

just stay where you are and we'll come retrieve you shortly...

in all seriousness, I've been thinking of this idea for awhile and I needed a little help hammering out the details.

Argh!

Oh, cool, glad I could help. Out or random unsatisfiable curiosity what made you start thinking about it?

well... it all started a while back ago when I developed a crude idea for a sci-fi story. It's gone through quite a metamorphasis, and now has the potential to be pretty good. One of the minor aspects of the story is the invasion of an alien group coming down to Earth in order to capture a certain person thats living in an underground city (that the earthlings have no clue about). So I needed to come up with the most logical way in which they'd go about doing this.
