"Contrarian" Gamers Suck Says Treyarch

I don't say games are bad. I may say that I think a game is boring (Black ops) but if I do say that I really don't like a game, I don't play it. With Black Ops, I got tired of it after a couple months and went back to MW2 because I find it FUN. Since then, the only times I've ever gone back to Black Ops was to play zombies.

Yes, there are a lot of people out there that say negative things about a game just to say negative things. I think what people just need to do is change how they phrase their opinions. Instead of saying "This game sucks." just say "I don't enjoy playing this game" or "I don't like this game". This gives the impression that that person doesn't like it, but doesn't make the game out to be awful unless a vast number of people state that they don't like the game, or things about a game.

If we don't complain about features or aspects of a game that we don't like, there won't be improvement. Cavemen didn't scold the caveboy who complained about square wheels.

Um. I would argue that not liking a game is generally linked to it being bad. I for one will gladly say that a game is bad if I don't like it. From my perspective, if I don't like a game, it's bad. CODBLOPS seems to be fitting that perfectly.

And aside from that it's hilarious seeing a guy employed in a company that made an unoriginal game in one of the most unoriginal series in one of the most unoriginal genres, moaning about how online bitching prevents devs from being creative. If you lot wanted to be creative you wouldn't have made CODBLOPS.

Come on, guy from Teyarch. You made yet another CoD game. And one that seems to be riddled with bugs to boot. You guys have cultivated one of the most intellectually empty fan bases known to man. Expect whining. Especially if your game sucks.

Maybe if they actually focused on bringing fun and entertainment to millions of people, it would change something?
Just an idea...

Well I guess if Treyarch tried new things, they might get burned. Good thing they don't so they can just get burned for making Modern Warfare again.

How about bitching at a game that feels like a pre-alpha? (coughBlackOpscough)

How about they just stop making games? Let those who have more interest and innovative take your place.

You're not supposed to please fans by making what they want, but by making what you want. Cant take the criticism and trolling? GTFO! Seriously. Im having enough with artist blaming me for low sales and bad reputation, because I dont get their art. Fuck off.
Those who have more innovative... That sentence is interest... Very interest indeed.

So you tell them they're not meant to make what fans want, and continue on to say that they shouldn't make games if it's not what you want. Personally I agree with you on them learning to take the heat, but in my opinion the game industry should focus on what the fans want. Following their own intuition is great too, but the audience should remain the main focus.

Wait, you're saying that if I ***** enough I can actually stop game companies from making more games? Quick, what's the address of a Final Fantasy forum?!

1. Sure, people ***** too much about things, but that's why most developers have the maturity to weed out "constructive criticism.
2. If we aren't supposed to provide feedback and criticism, then how can developers know which directions to take with a franchise to keep fans happy?
3. Did it ever occur to you that maybe- just maybe- there's a problem with the game and the complaints are valid?
4. Seriously, complaining about being afraid to take risks in an article focusing on CoD? Because we all know that nothing's riskier than publishing yet another sequel to possibly the most popular shooter series ever? (I'd say game series, but I'm not sure whether or not CoD has surpassed Final Fantasy yet...)
5. Blah, blah, wah, wah... Everyone should be happy with our product. It's a priviledge to be allowed to pay a considerable sum of money for a game, and you should be glad just for the chance to play our artistic masterpiece. You're not a developer, so your input is meaningless.

It wouldn't make much sense to say a gamee is good because you didn't enjoy it though.

I guess if you buy a game you're entitled to critique it against your perceptions of what you thought the product was like. I thought this game would cater to my interests, but it doesn't so it's bad.

I guess the more diplomatic stance would be; "This game doesn't appeal to me, but some might like it" ... of course that's either being diplomatic or simple speculation.

I prefer to say "I liked these aspects, but I didn't like these ones". "X game sucks" is becoming an increasing problem, but if this can be turned around, constructive criticism can go a long way.

Well I just gained a lot of respect for treyarch. If it wasn't for activision I might actually buy their games.

When asked if he could change anything about the game industry, Treyarch's community manager said he would stop all the bitching from fans.
Good call! I've been saying this for some time now.
And I can also say with a great deal of certainty that a large portion of the people on this site are guilty of this (being bitchy "contrarian" gamers, and generally unhelpful as far as the industry is concerned, I mean).

"Personally, as a community manager who lives in the media or social media world every day, I think the social culture of video games is moving in a more negative direction as technology and social media continues to grow," Olin said. "Rather than growing with it, the trend seems to be devolving. More and more gamers seem to forget what this industry is all about." Which is ostensibly bringing fun and entertainment to millions of people, something that many so-called fans forget.

excellent quote. I fully agree with his comments. These people he speaks of are a major reason for the genre becoming so stale .. perhaps.

Sounds like activision is tired of listening to all those poor fools Innocent civilians who tried to play Block Ops on the PS3. I doubt he is talking about your average player who makes a small complaint after getting worked up.

(This is going to very counter intuitive)

So...the developers of Call of Duty, a game that has barely changed since 2007 is complaining that the fans won't let them be creative?

ok...

Also, contrarion by means that they are against the majority, which means that they are the minority. If they're catering to the "contrarion" audience then they would be leaving the majority out...

But enough poking holes in their logic, I agree that sometimes the criticism goes too far. I'm not a huge Call Of Duty fan, and while the few I do actually enjoy are Treyarch titles, I do see how every now and then it can get old to hear people whine, especially the ones who do it without any intelligent input.

Most creative industry? Well, it can be the most creative, but ain't nuthin' creative about just churning out one console FPS after another with little to differentiate it from all the other console FPSs out there. Wanna be creative, Treyarch? Then be creative. Explore other types of games. Give the crappy shooters a rest for a while.

If someone thinks your game is shit then they are going to tell you.

Jesus Christ. I thought Blops was shit, therefore i don't play it any more, if someone thinks your game is fun and entertaining they probably aren't going to openly ***** about it (unless they are burdened with an abundance of stupid) so you can assume that the people on your forums telling you your game is shit, think your game is shit.

I also love the fact that the community manager for Treyarch is talking about the decline of creativity due to fans grumbling after they have just churned out one of the most grey and uninteresting games I've played in a long time.

maybe if activision allowed treyarch and the now dead infinity ward to make something thats not a cookie cutter reiteration of the same crap 7 times over each year, then i will have some respect for those hypocritical comments Olin posted.

Edit: btw, its not the devs fault, as always, blame activision
