You know you can game when you feel like it right? Is this a foreign concept to you people? Play when you're in the mood for it? Go live your life, if you suddenly feel like playing a game then take out your old console and play. Gaming is something you do for fun, to relax it's not a job so don't treat it like one.

Not sure I understand what you mean. What exactly are you going to do to signify your[footnote]That IS the right "your" by the way. I mean that the action of quitting is yours. Just a note to all you grammar nazis out there.[/footnote] "quitting gaming"? Are you going to toss all your games and consoles into a big trash compacter? Purposefully get banned from any and all gaming forums you might visit? Disconnect your internet to ensure you never come into contact with an article about sexism in games ever again?

If you're sick of reading dumb articles/forum threads about gaming, don't read them.

If you're sick of bad "AAA" games, don't buy them. The same goes for DLC.

If you think the next console generation will be shit, don't buy one.

What you shouldn't do is make some silly, dramatic and ultimately meaningless statement about "quitting gaming". And it really is meaningless. Look, the medium isn't perfect, but you don't actually have to put up with all the shitty parts to ENJOY gaming. Being "in the gaming scene" doesn't necessarily mean buying every AAA title and DLC. It doesn't mean frequenting forums to argue about the same things every other week. What's wrong with just playing a game that you enjoy every once in a while, and having that be the end of it?

Incidentally, I don't even know if this works as an answer to your question, because I really have no idea what you're trying to say. It SOUNDS like you're swearing off games completely because SOME games are ripoffs, and also the internet won't shut up about a few things. Which is, of course, an utterly nonsensical notion. If that's not what you're saying, please tell me. I'd love to offer a more valuable and informed response.

If you have got to that point then I think you have already made up your mind... And other peoples reasons won't change you...

What I will do though is query your reasons. You say that you are tired with the gaming scene, what do you mean by that? Are you implying that you just don't want to carry on talking with the anonymous masses about over exaggerated personal opinions on tropes in todays gaming society, or do you really want to give up gaming all together?

I grew up without the internet, and not having many frinds who played games. So I had a couple who did, and we chatted about the games we liked, and the bits we liked in them... Times were simple. Nowadays there is a lot of shit surrounding games, the way they are designed, and the people who play them... and I say, so what? I don't take part in the negative discussions on the net, I just carry on playing my games, and chatting with people about what I like about them... nothing has to change!

If you are feeling a slight resentment towards the games themselves then take a break (like in a relationship) and learn that way whether it just a slight on the games due to the discussion around them, or whether you really have lost the spark you once had. I sometimes take breaks from gaming and focus on other activities is I feel I am relying on them too much, or find they are effecting things like my social life, and then I will always return to them with a fresh head!

So convince me to stay escapists; give me one/three good reasons why I should stay in the gameing scene.
If you still enjoy playing games you should continue to do so. Maybe you should steer clear of communities that do the things that irk you the most. There will always be extremists and it's important to learn to deal with them, even if that means simply ignoring them. I'm not sure that meta-narrative is really an issue. Sacrificing gameplay for features nobody asked for kinda is. Point being sometimes it's not worth getting worked up over.

Alternatively you could take a break from games for a while.

I share your thoughts mate, but Hideo Kojima keeps pulling me back in. Metal Gear Solid games help to keep me in the gaming scene. Oh and some Japanese RPG games like Resonance of Fate, Star Ocean The Last Hope, Agarest games and some other ones I can't remember but had fun playing. Oh, I remembered that Disgaea games take forever, so if you want length you might wanna go there.

You can always take a break, take it easy, go out for drinks at night with your mates and talk about life, until something you like comes out. Yeah I know not having a huuuge library to choose from sucks for players that have been playing for so long like you and I, but the world has, for some unknown reason, been turning into a crappier place in the last years and obviously the gaming industry exists in this world so it goes down with the boat a little.

A guy sometimes feels saturated and even things he liked before will look boring and pointless. You just gotta try and either take a break for a while or try to find some other games somehow.

I was in the same situation as OP a few years back.
For me, whehn I was in the same mindset I had to look into games I wasn't into to find the level of freshness that would get me into gaming again.
I wasn't into JRPG's but I took a deep breath and went into Persona 4 and fell in love with it, to the point its my all time favorite game now.
Wasn't into western style RPG's but gave Dark Souls and found a gaming experience I haven't found in years, finally, a game that doesn't hold your hand but instead forces you to learn as you play, a true learning experience of a game!(I know its japanese but what ev.)
I haven't touched a DS in years but got one and tried Ghost Trick and Ace Attorney, fell in love with those two!
I could not see myself playing point and click adventures but then I tried The Walking Dead and the earlier mentioned Ace Attorney and I'm so happy I did.
A few weeks ago, I thought a game like Xcom would be something I wouldn't be into but for the past three weeks its all I've been playing.
Now I'm hoping to get into PC gaming in my search for great games, even though I spent my entire gaming history on console and I cannot wait to see what I find.
What I'm trying to say is, try to get out of your comfort zone, look for games where ever they maybe, even if they come from genres you already tried and hated or not tried at all, give them another chance ,you may be surprised with what you find.
I'm absolutely crazy about games now, yet it was only a few years ago that I had given up all hope!

I want to add something.
OP, the AAA market is not the only market, there are plenty of alternatives to it, the handheld scene is great right now, the indie scene is a beast right now and as a console gamer, the stuff coming out of the PC market is kinda making me jealous.
And even when you do want those triple A games, there is an easy way not to give into them, just do what I do and wait several weeks or preferably months, you see Square and EA flipping tables because their typical AAA game is not making 5 million sales first months?
Yep, that's a perfect way to tell them your not satisfied, its basically you playing hard to get, there basically banking on you running out to pay 60$ day one, and this is you responding "Meh, maybe when its cheap", and its not even that hard to do, remember, you have plenty of alternatives, so when that online pass filled, Drm ridden mess of game is shat out, just throw it way in the back of your to buy list if not at all.

If I'm going to take your request seriously and give you a reason to keep playing, I'd say to start playing on a smart phone. That would basically correct every problem you have. No expense, no big narratives, no long updates, no one takes it seriously, and easy to play in small bits of free time. Only thing you would have to be mindful to avoid DLC and micro-transactions. Thats the best argument I can give you, If the AAA market is bringing you down, just play casual.

Do what I did and follow some Kickstarter projects, you're bound to find something that floats your boat.

Also stay away from AAA's and gaming sites for awhile.

(1) Stop buying all the games you hear people talking about or read about here or the ones you get recommended. Just get what really interests you.
(2) Stop talking about games with others when you're not gaming.
(3) Don't play online for a while (or do it without a headset if you do).
(4) Stick to playing one (or two at most) games at a time. Don't buy stuff and stockpile it. If you're already playing something you don't need to buy anything more. (And when you're ready to buy it, it will be cheaper anyway).
(5) Don't force yourself to go any further with any game if you're not enjoying it. Either turn it off at that point or just stop playing it altogether.

OR

(a) Stop gaming for a while.
(b) Try retro gaming for a while whenever you start again.

Maybe I've just gotten too old (I'm twenty, so that's right out), or maybe too busy, or maybe I'm just tired of videogames.
this is false on the too old count. I'm 28 and still play video games. Too busy and tired possibly.

All of them. All of it. Tired of the extremists. Tired of the 2deep4u pseudo-intellectuals. Tired of everything being teh sexist/racist.
I think most of us are tired of that

But I don't want to leave the gameing scene. This is the one hobby I've really enjoyed, and I've been doing it since was six years old. I have fond memories of playing Tachyon when I was eight, of Starlancer when I was ten, of Ratchet and Clank when I was twelve. I remember the day I bought my 360 with my own money, how happy I was to finally be part of scene.
Why not take a break? I do that from time to time. I'll wear myself out on gaming then take a month or few years off of it and come back to it. My longest break was 10 years. And I'm still playing video games. I won't give you reasons to stay or go. You pretty much almost sound like you have your mind made up. So anything I say won't really influence you if that's the case. It's also a stupid reason to stay. Just because someone says for you to and makes a convincing enough argument. Do it for you. I'm tired of guys being assholes to me just because they perceive me as female because according to the doctors and most of society I am female (actually genderfluid and preference of being androgynous mostly but that's my own thing). Solution to that? I don't play online anymore. I play online with people I know. Fixed that problem easily.

get into a secondary hobby to balance things out for a awhile, forget all this anti gaming news crap go play things like for say pen @ paper games(pathfinder, world of darkness, fallout pnp exc) or tabletop like war hammer or war machine
(though getting buddies who are interested are required).if you need to place to start for info out while some may say 4chan is the pit of the internet in some cases it is /tg/or traditional games can get you started also if you sadly don't have friends go to your nearest tabletop/card gaming store they should usually have game days, hope this assists you good luck.

Whelp, I think it's time to throw in the towel.

All of them. All of it. Tired of the extremists. Tired of the 2deep4u pseudo-intellectuals. Tired of everything being teh sexist/racist.

I'm tired of the constant calls to be taken seriously. Taken seriously by whom exactly?
I have to ask these 2 questions.

Q1: How many hours do you spend actually playing games compared to been on the internet, reading and talking about games? It's all too easy to get too caught up in the latter that you stop playing games. I've noticed that over the last 3 years or so gaming sites have becoming increasingly venomus and cynical.

Q2: What games do you play and what type of gamer are you? Are you like most core gamers, ie reads news sites and only plays the next hyped games and lets current gaming trends dictate what play.

My advice is to drastically cut down been on the net talking about games and spend more time actually playing them, when you do visit the net avoid editorials and debate / comments like the plague since if that's all you surround yourself with, then it's no wonder you feel negative yourself. Instead try looking for sources of gaming news that tend to be positive or factual. Siliconera is imo the best site for Japanese gaming news, they try to keep away from the negative BS that plagues sites like Dtiod as much as possible, including the comments section is modderated to stamp out dumb fanboyism and ranters.

You Tube is another good place to find gamers who are still positive and passionate about games, imo the best lot are retrogamers and collectors like Happy Console Gamer and The All Gen Gamer, ppl who don't care if a game is new or old they just play good games that they like and makes them happy.

The good thing about retro gaming is that it's a great way for getting into new genres especially niche and competitive game As the oldies tend to simpler and don't have the baggage of iteration just for the sake of selling sequels.

Are you into handhelds? I've only had a DS and PSP for a few weeks and I've hardly turned on my 360 and PC since. It's like travelling back to the PS2 era with quality Japanese games with interesting mechanics.

You don't like console gaming. So switch to the pc! Ofcourse you dislike gaming if you are looking for quality games on consoles. You have to see the other side of the coin untill you dismiss the entire hobby.
And that's an entire bag of cats by itself.
PC's cost wayyyy more that I care for, and instead of firmware update and junk data, I get viruses and esoteric system requirments.

Although, maybe I just have leftover burned feelings after constantly having to pass over games because my computer was short a hundred dollar upgrade.
It's a myth that pc's cost more than consoles. Depending on your graphical satisfactional needs, they cost the exact same. You can get a pc, replace some parts ever 4 years or so and the cost would be nearly identical to getting a console every 4 years.

Only fools get virusses, not visiting shady websites or unknown links, and having something like AVG Free installed and an anti-spyware program, anda yearly malware scan can keep everything an ordinary internet user might not want at bay.

I guess the cost depends on what you want to and do spend.
I actually agree in regards to the cost. I used to be of the mind that it costs too much as well but if you look in the right places it can be quite cheap. You don't need to play every game on ultra settings to enjoy them. I would have suggested upgrading slightly more often than every four years until I remembered it's the OS that's propelling my total bill upwards.

Your problems are with gamers and the AAA industry. I say ignore the gamers. They don't matter all that much. What matters is that you enjoy the games you play. Also, none of the things you were raging about really affect the Indie scene. Seriously, though. Go indie.
Edit: You seem to be complaining mostly about the Console scene and know nothing about the PC scene. No, it doesn't cost $3,000 to get a good pc that will run everything. No, you won't get a million viruses. No, your computer will not explode after one year. Invest in a solid system ($1,000 is overkill, honestly) and you won't have to do much other than occasionally replace a part or two every few years. Its really not as hard as people make it out to be...
Plus, you don't need a separate gaming rig and a regular computer for every day use. No shame in using one computer for what you need...

I don't see the problem. This is something almost everyone goes through sooner or later, and likely more than once.
The solution? Hiatus. Just take a break from gaming, for however long it takes for you to miss it, and do something else. Whenever I get like this I just use my consoles for watching movies, otherwise I spend my time reading, playing music, taking mini-vacations, or whatever else tickles my fancy.
You need some variety, that's all. And besides, after some time off the modern day games industry bullshit won't seem as crushing anymore too.
