Phantasy Star Worked.
Beaten to it...

Yes Consuls have had a tiny number of MMOs before... they've never really gotten very far, and can't say I tried any of them. But no reason they wouldn't work, but they'd probably be limited like GuildWars, into having lots of instances to save on processing power, and towns might have to have smaller caps... most the FPSs on consuls only go up to 16/24 don't they? While PCs have been running 32 as the standard for ages with "mega servers" of 64+ in certain games.

The format would need to be fiddled with..but certainly it's possible, even if MMORPGs in general, in my opinion, have less of a chance of winning out on console. I think a large part of the problem is without a system-keyboard like the Dreamcast had, you have to deal with either a controller-based chat system or voice comms.. both of which, at this stage of the game, can be quite immersion breaking in a genre that's very much about immersing yourself in an adventure.

Perhaps at some point, someone will find a way to get voice chat to work without hurting immersion. Maybe if the chat system could respond to talking-character's location relative to your own (or your camera), and had a reliable way of making the voice sound like the character (EVE is presently trying this latter strategy.. questionable results so far to my knowledge).

Didn't GTA IV do something similar to that? Like a voice chat based on proximity to your character?

Weren't they considering making Guild Wars 2 a console game? Either that or I'm making things up again.

Anyone ever heard of Dust 514? It's in development at CCP (makers of EVE). It looks pretty good; so yes, a console MMO could work.

you could just take borderlands make some small adjustments tata console mmo. If you want an rpg like WoW just make combat like bioshock one trigger magic or abilities (depending on class) other trigger for weapon attacks. In the pause menu you can epuipe magic (or abilities to different slots and same with weapons. I think this combat would be preffered by people who are but off the point and click combat of other mmos also if you add jumping you can make bosses where you can get to places in order to attack a weak point for extra damage or just for damage. This would make epic bosses more action packed and you would feel more like your character making the experience more exiting. I to think they would have to split the maps into different sections to reduce lag. (wane hear more about my idea just say) so in short yes I think it would work I think if they don't have bad lag they would be better then pc mmos.

Hm.. well even if so, direction is just as important - this is something of an all-or-nothing issue, really. If you don't feel the sounds are coming from around you, and comfortably have an idea of where, voicechat's just an immersion breaker - something MMORPG's are particularly vulnerable to as a genre.

Not enough buttons. I played Red Alert on the 360 (not an MMO, but a typical sort of PC game) and there just wan't enough buttons to do everything. You ended up having to press impossible combinations of buttons to do the simplest things.
