if you ask me its entirely possible, but i don't really see why (exept for the obvious lulz) Plus, and i may be wrong on this but, because Steam uses paypal the scary personal info isn't stored there. So there would be 'less' to worry about, as a consumer. I think, someone tell me if im way off the mark here.

No, most hackers are likely gamers and most gamers use steam. You hack steam and hackers will find you for payback.

Oh it's totally possible. Anything that's on the internet is hackable. Xbox Live, PSN (duh), Steam.

Simple solution? Don't save your credit/debit card details to your account. Just use your card without saving it to your account or buy pre-paid cards. Simple.

Anything could, but I doubt it will.

They've attacked gaming sites, but these guys are probably gamers, let's face it. And I'd imagine Valve are fairly careful after the whole HL2 beta thing.

Well it's completely possible, if people can hack the FBI, they could probably do the same to Valve, but i don't see any reason to do so.

Steam boasts some pretty slick security. I don't doubt that they could be hacked, the resources or ingenuity required to do so would probably be beyond the realm of Lulzsec or Anon.

Valve secretly have AI that protect the whole of their system, Glados was based on a real AI they have in their computer system =P
Love this....

"Hello! I see you. What are you doing? Lulzsec? What kind of name is that, Did you know that you are fat and your parents abandoned you. That's probably what you're doing here - looking for your parents. They were here you know. But you know what they told me? They said that if you came along to tell you they were happy having a party, somewhere else.. without you. Oh, I wouldn't touch that if I were you, it's probably filled with raw sewerage. You know, all this time you've been sitting here trying to attack me for no reason, I've been looking for you... There you are! You Monster! Goodbye!"

I don't like PSN or XBL... I Still don't think that they should be hacked!

With the ability to link your FB/Escapist/other accounts with Steam i'm sure there IS a way for people to get in. it's one of the reasons i refuse to link my accounts. and that i use different passwords for them...
Though that could just be me being paranoid.

I don't know if they're "next" but of course they could be hacked. Everything could. It's not worth worrying about.

I believe is would be possible, but since Steam has Steam Guard, you would also have to access/hack a Steam user's Email to get access to their account, and I feel that could get pretty out-of-hand considering that lots of people use many different Email services.
Was just in the NWN hack thread... I wonder, despite it being a 10-year-old datasource if any of the user data sets would lead into the mail and valve accounts of some people.

Well I just read in the news today that they hacked the public face of the CIA website, so they already seem to be aiming high - it may well just be a matter of time. However, if they did do it, I think it would finally cross the line for me and make me genuinely annoyed.
I don't know how hard a target the public website for the CIA would be, I mean it's not like they stick national secrets on that thing. I'd wager that the credit card information of steam's users is better protected than the CIA welcome page.

Could? Yes.
Likely? Not at all.

You'd have better luck trying to raid Gabe's fridge.
It's impossible, you have to be able to get into Gabe's E-mail account because you're not the same user.

Also: It wouldn't help to hack Steam because of that. Steam Guard! It's the same reason Blizzard is releasing the Authenticator at around $6 for every 2 years.

Honestly I think the next big security upgrade is a PDA styled password generator. It would work with any game supporting it and you'd HAVE to have it to login. That might sound inconvenient but stop for a second and look at what's on your desk already. Is a PDA next to your monitor really going to hurt when you know everything is secure?
