So tell me, HRP-4C, are you by chance a 'pleasure model'?
Lame.

I love that episode. Just hilarious.

More on topic: It's creepy, yet intriguing all that the same time. This has got to be the smoothest robot movement I've ever seen. And then they put a woman's head on it and a dress, and it got really awkward. Still: Very cool tech.
lol, have a cookie, my friend.

It's nothing more than an animatronic poppet with a strange mask on it, so sure the thing is creepy and makes us want to destroy it. On the other hand, considering that a while ago Honda (I think) had a robot that couldn't even walk a flight of stairs without tumbling over. We're coming along on things like motor skills and pewrhaps sometime soon even proper articulation, but as far as anything else, it seems a given these things will take decades before they look like Dean Stockwell and Grace Park and want to destroy their masters.

I once had to a save a woman and her unborn child from a HRP-4C.

-edit I wonder how many times they had to start over during practice runs because either it fell over, got of tempo or froze?

Creepy. The blank, soulless expression. The giant, frozen hands. The arms that you can't see but you KNOW they are nothing but metal bars and wires. The way her left shoulder bends at the end that is not quite how a shoulder is supposed to bend. This thing resides deep in the Uncanny Valley, and I wish it would descend from whence it came.

Japan, why don't you do something useful with your robotics. This is stupid, and kind of scary.
Well, if the Space Channel 5 aliens ever invade Earth, I know who I'm betting on.

Oh wait, you're talking about the robot.

I thought you meant Lady Gaga.

It's ability to shift it's weight from one foot to the other seemed pretty impressive, but the overall performance was pretty lame.

Well, its a step up for animatronics or whatever its called when you have a robot simulate movement.

It's still in the uncanny valley though.

Also, inb4, "...but can I fuck it?"

Wait thats a lie. Well, I tried.

The balance the robot has is outstanding. Too bad they worked so hard just to make something so... disturbing :s

Why does everyone seem to aspire to make a human-looking robot?

Oh look, another obligatory 'robot overlords' joke in robot news. How fun and new.

Honestly, what use is this? What possible use do we have for a dancing robot other than novelty? Show me one that can eviscerate a tree in a few seconds, or de fuse a bomb, and I'll clap. But this? Are our Role Models so fabricated that we would replace them with robots?

Darn you, Tito. My professor JUST covered this in class tonight. The Japanese student said he was embarrassed by it.

Progress is made through steps. Japan is working backwards through these steps by first making a robot that can dance, then refining it to a point where it is much faster and more precise in its movements. Basically taking care of the stupidest use, and through that making it much better for a more practical purposes.

I mean how the fuck do you have a dancing robot and not make it do The Robot!

God that was freaky. But yeah, once again. I totally call that we are gonna have robo brothels before the decade is out.
and thus will all concerns with overpopulation be laid to rest

Robot? I didn't notice any robot, I was kind of busy watching four lovely pairs of legs dance around a pair of poles that looked disturbingly like oversized human leg bones.

Sorry, but those legs freak me out slightly more than the other out-of-proportion components. They tossed a dress on it, why not slacks?

Oh my God, there's dozens of videos of this thing. Want some nice nightmare fuel? Sit in a dark room and watch it walk towards you [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=brD5D0ytD04&feature=related].

Obviously the dance thing was only a way to show how keeping a good balance with a 2 footed robot "human-shaped" has improved, it wasn't meant to be the next greatest dance hit. Or what else would you have it to do? perform with the cirque du solei?... you wish! it's going to be another 10 years at least before that happens (optimistic point of view)

Finally, NO! of course your not going to be hunted by killing berserk robots, that's ridiculous!, the idea of releasing a human-killing android is totally stupid, do you know how much would be worth not only the research to make it act, think and learn as a human or in this case as a psyco that is not only going to go rampage in the streets murdering everything on sight but covering its traces while going for world domination, it already sounds like some nutcase multimillionaire idea, because he will also have to pay for the incredibly strong and yet agile body, and let us not forget that it will need at least the basic human features like bleed, so it can be an effective assassin and not get recognized so easily. Stop and think for a sec. who will invest so much money to produce those so he can kill everyone in your neighbor and eventually the whole world?. And if you think that a mass production of house robots are going to suddenly develop a threatening behavior against humans while serving you...-"Master doesn't want whip cream on his ice cream, Master is evil, Master must be eliminated!" you might need to live your room once in a while...-"I can't the creepy dancing robot will get me!"
