Oh, a hive mind would also be needed, but we (hopefully) aren't that dumb.
That's precious. I know plenty of Americans who would be embarrassed by it too, and those who would find it freaking awesome.Jikuu said:Darn you, Tito. My professor JUST covered this in class tonight. The Japanese student said he was embarrassed by it.
Do you really think that useful things aren't being done? You can't base an opinion on the tiny trickle of news and videos on blogs and game sites. These robot displays are designed for lay people and the media, and partcularly to show the mobility and other abilities of the technology in entertaining and enjoyable ways. Japan takes robotics very seriously, and in a real, useful way. Automation is the future for Japan's ageing population. While robots are shown in entertaining ways, it is for research into core technologies. The application of the technologies is far reaching, into areas such as manufacturing, elderly care and working in hazardous environments.Ekonk said:Japan, why don't you do something useful with your robotics. This is stupid, and kind of scary.
Sure, but Rome wasn't built in a day, right?deonte9109 said:I really do appreciate the Japanese making the next step towards skynet but this is just too far on the uncanny valley

This robot is for research, not industrial, purposes. There are advanced robots being designed that can do fuctional things in manufacturing and so on. These are not picked up by the media because they aren't anywhere near as "click worthy" on the Net. Trust me when I saw this robot is not the entirety of robotics application in Japan - Rome wasn't built in a day. However, this robot must not be underplayed. It's abilities have huge implications in later industrial exploitation in the future, but the technologies must be further developed.Zechnophobe said:Oh look, another obligatory 'robot overlords' joke in robot news. How fun and new.
Honestly, what use is this? What possible use do we have for a dancing robot other than novelty? Show me one that can eviscerate a tree in a few seconds, or de fuse a bomb, and I'll clap. But this? Are our Role Models so fabricated that we would replace them with robots?
