Not to mention children dying because of careless fireballs from the player.

That's just sick.

A child dying in a dragon attack is sad, not sick, it's a wild animal (ok, a rather intelligent, if evil animal) attacking indiscriminately, its no different from a childbeing hit by a car, or attacked by wolves.

in the case of a fireball, why the hell is a child dicking about near an enemy anyway?

plus, 90% of the kids in skyrim are annoying, disrespectful shits anyway.
"Another one come to lick the boots of my father" "oh, you must be a servant, I want my meat rare" "WHERE IS MY DRESS? I WANT MY DRESS NOW!" "Boys, girls, dogs, elders, there's nobody I wont fight!" "I wouldn't have to keep beating him up if he admitted he likes me
"
And a fair few are teetering on the evil sides of their moral compasses already
"Yay! grelod's dead!" "Thank you dark brotherhood!" "When I grow up, I want to be an assasin too!", and of course not forgetting the one who actually obtained human flesh, bones, and organs, and preformed a dark ritual to hire an assasin.

in the case of the last few, the idea that THEY are immortal is actually rather terrifying...
"Kill just one person, you can solve so many problems. I wonder at the possibilities."

I have no idea why anyone would waste their time doing this, also the fact that all the heads are female is a bit unsettling.
I also find it genuinly creepy when people complain about not being able to kill children in the game, yes it's just a game, but why would you want to?
Because every child in the game is a little shit, and we have no way to get back at the brats constantly harassing us. This is simply the easiest way to get that.

Yeah I agree with MrDeckard, quite a neat idea.

The interesting part (for me), is that he must have lured those people into the dwelling before he 'offed' them.

My character in Oblivion had a fireplace full of crackling skulls and the table opposite was literally covered in Daedra hearts, they kept falling off of the pile and on to the floor, pesky little pumps that they are!

Fallout wasn't as much fun, no collecting skulls there. I had to make do with putting dead guards bodies in the toothed door mechanism of the Vault and then closing it ... payback for nearly killing my poor little new guy.

Minecraft.
Minecraft, that game where you do nothing in particular. Try again.
Congratulations, you've earned the "I have no bloody clue what I'm talking about!" achievement. The reward is 200 Gamer Points and -30 IQ points.

Minecraft IS a role playing game. It is merely a RPG where you are required to do all the character building yourself. The game tells you nothing about who you are or why you are there; it merely presents you with a world and says "have fun!" In that sense, it's more "role play" than WoW, the userbase of which has pretty much abandoned any pretence of being anything other than a PvP environment, broken up by occasional raiding of dungeons with 60+ identical other players. Hell, I'd wager that Skyrim will go the same way - there will be a 'correct' build, and a 'correct' equipment loadout, and all the 'serious' Skyrim players will adopt it.

Can anyone here see that happening in Minecraft? I doubt it. There's no 'right' way to build your house, or to flatten a mountain, or to build a TNT cannon. A lot of people may copy what others have done, but there's always someone who finds a better, more ingenious way of doing things. The modern RPG community can learn a lot from Minecraft. It sure won't learn anything from listening to people like you.

There really isn't though..

I mean, there are some really "good", potentially game breaking things but, and here's the deal, noone really cares because it's single player. There's noone to compete with except your own expectations.

I don't play minecraft, but I do play dwarf fortress which has some similar elements. Even if the most open ended games, it's fairly obvious that some things are "better" than others. I have copied building or room designs off the wiki because they're more efficient or cool than what I was doing.

That is, until everything becomes purely aesthetic, and then I think you have work pretty hard to justify that your game is a role-playing game, because once you get to that level of broadness what game isn't? Technically command and conquer is a 'role playing' game (in fact, roleplaying games started out as an offshoot of historical wargames). Space invaders is a roleplaying game. Wolfenstein 3D is a roleplaying game.

As long as a game is single player, personal preference and challenge play will always be able to get a look in.

No thanks, adjusting for the lowest common denominator is a task best suited for others.

If you think that is clearly sarcasm and only the least intelligent of us can pick up on it, remember that sarcasm is a ***** to express with only words to use.

No, it wasn't just idiots that didn't pick up on it.
Think again! That added line at the end, especially, really drives the point home. At least for those that care to think about context. I never expected everyone to pick up on the subtlety of my commentary, though. Thanks for the smiles, friend!

Ok, both of you, enough. Knhirt made a joke, and not everyone picked up on that fact. Ok, it happens, we get it. There's no need to keep beating this particular dead horse, believer258. Nobody here is smarter than the other because they did or did not fail to get a joke.

So let's just move on, ok?

Hang on:

An art director puts something like that in to a level? Well, at most is its blase. Nothing world changing. Certainly atmospheric, if you're hunting serial killers.

But a role-player actually role plays in a role playing game? You act like its creepy?

Really?

Am I the only one thinking, "wait, that's all? Role playing a serial killer? In a game with an in depth emphasis on combat?"

This like several steps back from relatively old FPS PC games such as Soldier Of Fortune.

It's a role playing game with no role to play. Smart move there, buddy. It's a LEGO box. That is all.

When this hits the real life news, I'm sure the "it's just a game" argument will really stick.

But as long as it doesn't ruin your immersion...

Really? Funny how it didn't feel that way to me the first time through; By the third night I was pretty much certain I was playing a Dwarf who was borderline paranoid of leaving the relative safety of his ever-growing cave network...

I can imagine Minecraft being awesome if you had a whole community of people. Or, better, two communities. That'd give you some reason to actually do things. Raid the countryside villages a little. Attack your neighbours. Build a big-ass obsidian castle to keep pesky dynamite away. That sort of thing.

However, Skyrim has this guided freedom already. That is why I think it deserves the pinnacle medal.

X3 was also mentioned. X3, that game advertised as "You have to play for six hours before you get to do anything good." That's not open-world. That's soul-sucking. The world is so open it's actually sucking in your life.

I always kind of wondered about the dark road into insanity that moddable games tend to follow. For instance, there is a mod that lets you kill kids, correct? And there are very likely sex mods (it didn't take long for them to pop up in Oblivion). Am I the only one who sees the horror that's just around the bend?

I did not know what the heads were all about until my character chopped off the heads of a few unlucky mages. As I saw the head roll down the hill i suddenly realized "Oh, THAT'S how he got the heads!".

.....cannot unsee, cannot undo

I really thought my sarcasm was obvious in my post, but I may need to hone my skills.

My response to this is that it's utterly fucking creepy. Even as a role play, you would have to be pretty messed up to go through all that work just to do that. And it's all women. Yeah, either someone just went through a bad breakup or his mother treated him like crap. Or something along those lines.
You could try to look into subtext a bit better, rather than suggest others pretend this is another website.

Which doesn't need its every post linked to a damn page in its wiki either, by the way.
