Pretty damn cute. I can see where the artists are coming from.

This is one of those things that makes me adore the internet. International incident in the Ukraine? Not much to be done about that. Instead, let's draw pictures of the qt3.14 attorney general!

I'm not even being sarcastic, this is legitimately great stuff.

Must feature many a tentacle and copious amounts of moe! Our very way of life depends on it, naturally...

Mostly tentacles, though...
Uh, wouldn't that mean drawing tenta-Putin doing things? I know he's got a certain cult of personality going but that's taking it too far!
This is hentai territory here, you cannot possibly take it too far. Tenta-Putin doing things has a good chance of not breaking the top 100 revolting hentai things posted on any given day.
Okay! I'm just going to step out of this conversation before we go down the inevitable road of hentaing up the world's leaders!

Also: yes, I'm unfortunately aware that such "entertainment" already exists.

I'm a little bit disgusted, 'cause it highlights the sexism in these online communities when a political figure who happens to be a young attractive woman gets drawn as a big-breasted anime stereotype with her boobs clearly pronounced under her uniform or even exposed cleavage. Or even worse, the Moe shit.

It's honestly rather pathetic people seem to accept "she's cute" as an excuse for objectification.
I also don't understand how stylized interpretations of people is instantly equated to sexism and objectification.
If we had stylized representations of her male counterparts in this debacle, you could argue it's not an indicator of sexism. But there isn't, though I imagine someone will try to present Hetalia pictures of political leaders, missing the satirical nature of it all.

This woman's position as a political figure in the Crimean crisis is, in these people's minds, less important than "she's pretty". Do you think anyone actually bothered to know what she's saying, what her views are and what work she's done or is doing in the ongoing political shitstorm?

She's not being depicted in a stylized manner for the sake of art, or satire, or a political statement, or to elaborate on an article. This woman is being depicted as an anime schoolgirl because some dipshits want to vent their fantasies about fucking her.

It's a woman being regarded as a piece of meat for adolescent boys to masturbate to, when she's neither asked nor offered to be part of your fantasies. It's disrespectful to the person in question to objectify them.

And that kind of response is part of the problem, defending misogynist behaviour with strawman BS in the hopes it'll discourage people from expressing their view that women should not be viewed as a sex object first, and whatever else they might be second. (If at all.)

Are you seriously suggesting that I cannot interest you in some Tony Blair/Rainbowdash crossover porn? Who wouldn't want to see that?!

On this I absolutely agree. I just wish it wasn't the only thing about her people care about.

Are you unaware of the stylized drawings of Putin that have existed before this event event occurred? And no, the ones I'm speaking of have nothing at all to do with Hetalia or satire and some of them are far more sexually charged than these.

This woman's position as a political figure in the Crimean crisis is, in these people's minds, less important than "she's pretty". Do you think anyone actually bothered to know what she's saying, what her views are and what work she's done or is doing in the ongoing political shitstorm?
Of course it's less important, her political views and actions are completely irrelevant to the artist's desire to draw her figure.

She's not being depicted in a stylized manner for the sake of art, or satire, or a political statement, or to elaborate on an article. This woman is being depicted as an anime schoolgirl because some dipshits want to vent their fantasies about fucking her.
So, in one swoop you deem yourself an authority on telling people what is and isn't done for art's sake and decide what everyone's motivations are for producing their representations. None of the pictures presented are even pornographic and any of them would be deemed art by the legal definition. Your speculation on people's intent behind the representations is unfounded until you offer some actual evidence of their intent beyond that you decided it was so.

It's a woman being regarded as a piece of meat for adolescent boys to masturbate to, when she's neither asked nor offered to be part of your fantasies. It's disrespectful to the person in question to objectify them.
Foundationless assertions abound. What's worse, you seem to indicate that you have to obtain permission from a person before you fantasize about them. You may find someone's fantasy tasteless or objectifying, but the idea that someone should have to offer themselves up to be a part of your thoughts of all things is absurd beyond reason.

And your responses are also part o the problem, making unfounded claims and decrying sexism that you don't demonstrate actually exists serves only to confuse these issues and waters them down. I won't discourage you from expressing your view, but I will certainly feel free to be critical of it.

1. There is. Putin already has a ton of art, relating to this and before this.
2. I still fail to see how this would be any different.

Now you're projecting.

Someone out there having perverted thoughts does not instantly equate to the art being made for such purpose. You're generalizing an entire audience.

It's because you're jumping to conclusions after making assumptions, it makes you look silly and prudish. You make for a good strawman because you're jumping on the sexism tirade after simply viewing some art that's kinda cute.

Pretty much this, I honestly have no idea what to say to this or how to react. I'm serious here, normally I'd have some lame joke or snarky thing to say but I'm freaking dumbstruck right now. I guess I can only say just how damn strange out of all the people roaming the planet somehow this woman ended up being drawn like this.

That is some reckless and cavalier use of the term top-notch. The only one that even resembles the actual person is a straight up copy job from a screen grab. I really don't understand the fascination, she just looks like some ordinary woman.

/facepalm
Yeah, it's really quite strange that they wouldn't.... wait, who?
If I had to guess, which I do since for some reason I can't bring up your profile (the site is running very slow for me tonight), I'd guess that you're either a woman or not a straight male. Because no straight male would look at that woman -who is utterly gorgeous- and say she's "some ordinary woman." Beauty is one thing but she also holds a political position many men and women would dream of having. Power is sexy.

And the anime art ranges from decent to fantastic, don't know why you feel the need to bash it.

Oh no, they not terrible or anything, but definitely not newsworthy quality in my opinion. I was kinda expecting something on the re-imagining creativity level of those Batman sharks from the other week (and I am not really into Batman), but honestly only one of those drawings even kind of looks like her. This left me with the impression that a bunch of young guys think this random lady in the news is hot, and drew some fanart. You can get that on DeviantArt daily.

And yeah, I'm not seeing what the big deal is over her looks, to me she just looks like your typical attractive woman. I think it's more that a lot of these people don't expect to see both attractiveness AND a position of power in a woman, so it's a crazy novelty in their eyes. That doesn't seem particularly flattering to me, though.

Oh so that's where this came from, I was wondering if somehow Crimea had a character in the Hetalia show or something. The first and only place I've heard of this until now is when this mod popped up in the Civ V workshop on Steam a couple days ago:

Natalia Poklonskaya's Empire of Crimea

Adds the overpowered Empire of Crimea and its supreme ruler Serene Empress Natalia I. Poklonskaya the Beautiful to the game.

TRAIT
Increased rate of Great People, especially Great Generals, since people from all over the world fall in love with Natalia and join her cause!

UNIQUE UNIT
Defender of Natalia, a slightly improved Great General. As a special little feature, these Defenders are members of the Facebook fan group of Natalia!

UNIQUE BUILDING
Natalia Statue. Instead of building a courthouse, Natalia just builds a statue of herself in occupied cites. Everyone immediately falls in love with her!

The bravery of posting this on Teh 'Scapist though, do you know the stick anime gets whenever it gets brought up in a non strictly anime related thread? Especially over something so hotly debated. Anyway time to dig up more fan art because she's ridiculously my type to educate myself about this whole Ukraine... Thing.
It's funny you mention this, because if you'd of asked me this a couple weeks ago. I would have no clue what you were talking about. Now after the "Waifu" and "Aversion to Sex" threads, I realize how anti-anime some of ze escapist really is. People actually thought we considered waifus to be our genuine wives. It's pretty alarming how low some of the escapist thinks about us.
That's nothing compared to what the general population of Japan thinks of Otakus. I've read in several places that in Japan, otakus are considered creepy pedophiles. I don't actually think that, but I've been known to occasionally say it to make weeaboos shut up about how great their animu is. Although I have been trying to get my "Worldwide Pedophile Otaku Sleepercell" conspiracy theory more exposure.

OT: Can someone explain what this woman actually does and what she's saying? I can't find anything about her not related to the fact that weeaboos are creaming their Attack on Evangelon pajamas or whatever for her. Is she pro-Russian? Pro-people? Does she work for Putin? I found one video of her speech but the translation seems iffy.

Well, in defense of that last bit, novelty stems from a lack of experience with something. While it may speak volumes about how few "attractive" women there are who hold powerful positions that are also newsworthy, I can see why someone who lacks experience with a person like that might be a bit enthralled. Attractive men in positions of power also inspire a slew of fanart, so I don't think it's just that she's a woman that has caused this response. If anything about it is really novel,(ignoring her actual age) is that it does seem to be some kind of story that jumped right out of a manga. Young female officers who hold power and are "attractive" are a mainstay trope of anime and manga.
