Looks like he's in hot water now. (Sorry Hankman)

But seriously, it's amazing the effort some guys put into finding new porn.

On a related note I totally have a phishing advert in the top banner ad.

For those who may be curios as to the REAL definition of stupid:

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/stupid

I just don't see the vicitms as being stupid. Ignorant, yes, stupid... Not so much.

"then convinced them to take the machines into the bathroom so he could photograph them in the shower"

... HOW?
Nothing could possibly, ever, convince a person with a brain that the only way to fix their machine was to bathe with it in the room. That's retarded.

Being tricked doesn't make them stupid. Legitimate-looking error messages are very convincing. My younger brother is very computer literate by most standards today, but I caught him almost purchasing one of those fake virus-scanners the other day when it told him his computer was infected.

But even assuming they are stupid, taking advantage of stupid people doesn't make it right or legal. I would think that obvious.

"Her mother became suspicious of the recurring error messages, so she called the police and the scam was uncovered."

Let me start by saying I'm glad this scum has been caught and all that, but am I correct in understanding that this woman called the police because her PC was infected with a virus?
Really? I've got a buddy who's a cop and he told me about a woman who called the police becausa a breaker had tripped and she wanted a cop to come and turn it back on, because she didn't know how.
I thought that took the cake but this at least comes a close second.
The way I figured the mom had some computer knowledge, and knew her daughter took it to a repair shop. After putting two and two together she figured that guy was up to no good.

I don't understand.

Why do people do this? There's free pornography on the internet. How is a fully defined video of hot pornstars not better than taking low res pictures of random people in the shower?

I still don't get why people do this sort of thing, lol.
Quite possibly, there is a thrill in the victim being unaware of the watcher.

It truly, truly saddens me how many are all too willing to blame the victims. No amount of ignorance, no matter how 'obvious' to some of us, means someone deserves to be violated. We can say this is a good example of WHY more people should be more computer/electronics literate, but it is the apex of assholery to suggest that someone should be PUNISHED or VIOLATED for not being so.
This, this thisity this.

I blame both parties equally.

Yeah, no offense, but if someone is going to use a computer, they should know the basics of how to use one. I feel the guy who did this deserves more blame, but the victims should have been aware of it.

On the other hand I'm sure we'll hear a follow-up of this guy being charged with child pornography if any of the pictures were of minors.

I'm sure the police are having a good old time "examining" the evidence. ;)

Some people have bizarre thought trains ;/
What's even more bizarre is that it actually worked! D:

I don't know what's crazier; That thought process, or the fact that it worked, meaning his victims had the same thought process.
I'd say that it actually worked is the worst. OK, those who are stupid enough to believe that steam would help, I can forgive it despite the unlimited amount of stupidity required to believe something so illogical. What I do when I want steam is that I boil water. Yeah, that produces lots of steam. This makes me lose hope in humanity all over again...

I'm just astonished he didn't bump into a lazy techie at some point, someone checking their computer in for repair with good knowledge but no inclination to perform repairs themselves.

OT: What astonishes me is that no one questioned this in all that time. Also that no one caught this nasty on their firewall.
Small hidden programs aren't easy to find unless you're actually looking for it. If the program hasn't been found and reported as malicious it wont be detected. Also he probably made the firewall allow its usage and check the "Do not ask again" box.

Ahem: "The man was finally caught when he installed the software on a younger girl's computer." Newsflash - not everyone preyed upon for ignorance is of an age or experience when their ignorance is "unforgivable" and "deserves" some kind of punishment.

To folks who aren't computer-savvy, I don't see this sounding overly strange. I mean, hell, I've heard people recommend using TOOTHPASTE to make a scratched CD readable. How bizarre does that sound? A lot more than "expose to steam."

tl;dr - thinking these folks deserved what they got is just dickish.

The number of people who feel this guy was smart about this or justified because the people he did it to were stupid makes me sick. You people obviously don't have girlfriends who you would just as soon not have someone peeping in on. Not to mention a strong sense of privacy. Think about this the next time the government remotely mentions wanting to put surveillance into your home. The hipocrisy will be tremendous.
That being sad, fooling an adult is one thing, but he crossed the line by doing it to a younger girl. He deserves to have a hammer taken to his nutsack while it is still connected and no anesthetic. He better be in prison for a long time.

You think this sort of thing could be used as an in-field test to link beauty to brains? I think we'll need some of his evidence to make sure...

I'm pretty certain everyone in this thread calling the victims stupid would be singing a different tune if the story was about an auto mechanic who overcharged people by telling them their left cylinder was misfiring or some shit. The only reason you're saying "these idiots!" is because you know enough about the subject that it seems obvious. You can say "oh, they should've known", and maybe that's true, but - and this is key - blaming the victims of exploitation for the exploitation always makes you a shithead.
Thank you so hard this. Seriously, I'm facepalming so hard at this thread.

What I had read was the Person took the computer into the MacStore instead of him and they noticed the spyware and told the customer they needed to call the police.

It's tempting to use our nerd prowess for evil, and so very easy, but with great intellect comes great social responsibility.

"Steam good for computer? K, i shower now."

Ugh. If people have basic computer knowledge this wouldn't happen.
