Ubisoft owns the Cryengine. Does this mean we'll see Assassins Creed 3 like this?

If only CryTek knew how to make good games to go along with their engines.

Meh, I prefer games with an art style other than photo-realism. Realistic games just aren't my favourite genre. While I agree that the engine is absolutely amazing, I can't help but feel there's something lacking, it has no expression, it doesn't really have any "life". If I look at a portrait done in the 16th Century it will probably look quite realistic, but not quite there. When I look at a Cubist piece of art, or a Surrealist piece it is much more interesting because it stands out - it takes you out of reality and replaces it with something far more interesting. The same applies for games. This engine takes you out of reality, then puts you back in it...the only thing that would make it more interesting is what happens in the game, but the overall look of the game still feels boring.

I would take Lostwinds over this just for its [Lostwinds'] beautiful art style, no kidding.

Obviously people will disagree with me, and someone will probably reply to this saying I'm an idiot.
You're not an idiot, I just disagree with you. While I really enjoy the stylized graphics of some games, I also enjoy massive realism that comes with some games these days. I would prefer it if they both advanced in what they could do.

Now if they could only figure out how to make a game as kick ass as the graphics.

Holy crap. I was wondering to myself earlier on why a lot of companies are looking for other engines instead of the Unreal Engine (I know, Batman:AA used it, and it was beautiful). Then I see this and know why. Juts stunning. I cannot wait to see massive explosions in real time with the shockwave affecting anything nearby (like liquefying a nearby enemies organs, or knocking them hundreds of meters away).

Hopefully the scalability will be like that of the Unreal Engine.

Amazing graphics as ususal from Crytek, but what worries me is that im not remembering many games besides far cry 2 and Crysis using the old engine. Im pretty sure there are more than those two i just cant think of any at this moment that were obviously using the cry engine. I just hope more developers will give it a shot and use it to its full potential

People always confuse engine with artists. That this looks good is to a large degree the responsability of the artists NOT the engine. You can do most of that with other engines too given you have an artist knowing his trade. And please don't call this "next-gen". No engine nowadays is next-generation in design since they are still all build after the same broken design from long time ago. They improve graphics and physics but this is not what makes a game engine next-generation. This buzz-word is annoying since any engine out there calls itself next-gen but really is just a brush-up on graphics and nothing more.

That is awesome.

To bad it would absolutely murder my computer.
Why? If your PC can run most of the multi-platform games (Prototype or Fallout 3 come to mind), you should have no problems with CryEngine 3.

Sure, it will look the best on a high-end monster PC, but we regular schmoes will also get to see some nice stuff.
But the thing was you could barely even run the last engine on a well indoubt computer. This looks like it would murder it. Although it showed an xbox 360 logo.
Any mid-end PC is more powerful than an Xbox and almost equal (in terms of raw power) to PS3.

I can run Prototype, one of the most fast-paced games ever ported to PCs, in 1680x1050, full details and V-Sync (I MUST run in V-Sync, or I get stutterings - weird, but common porting bug). Same with Fallout 3. In fact, there were tests that proved that PC graphics (even not modified by users) are superior to Xbox 360 and equal to PS3.

That was almost a year ago. When Crysis 2 or the first game to use the new engine is released, anyone should be able to run it. Crysis 1 was a wake-up call for a lot of people, even for me.
I'm not to great with computers and the best game I can run is one of the old Doom games. I might have to check it ou then.

I still don't think most of you people realize that CryEngine 3 is a scaled down version of CryEngine 2. It may have some better optimizations here and there, but overall it's being scaled down for use on the low-memory consoles (360 and PS3).

Meh, who needs graphics.
If you ask me they're the least important factor of a game
Nobody asked.
It really bothers me that everytime a dev puts a lot of effort into an engine that can handle mass scale pretty, some hack has to come along and dismiss it with "graphics don't matter" comments. The art of a game does matter, it doesn't detract from the gameplay and it's stupid to dismiss all of that good work because it's cool to rate gameplay higher right now. Without the massive advances made in graphics and engine optimization, gameplay would never have evolved beyond pong....

Pretty damn good, I wasn't really that impressed though as graphics aren't what draws me to a game (yes I know this is showcasing the engine). Still though, it's enough to make you go o.o and then

man ive seen cry engine 3 demos on ign in march and aug
so erm why is it you only found out now. is only recently been completed and being sold to other publisher i suppose.

anyway it is wonderful now there should be more time for making the game, and less poor ports.
