I can't speak for the followers but that is the first thing that came to mind. I just don't see the appeal it has to people, and I am pretty open minded.

Admittedly as someone who loved Fallout 3, I cannot say the first one has impressed me so far.

Most of Army of Darkness and Elephant Parts. They didn't hold up to time. Neither did Young Frankenstein.

Fallout 3 is not a cult classic
No Final Fantasy is (and 10-2 was better than 8, 12, or 13)

A cult classic DID NOT SELL WELL OR WAS UNDERLOOKED
What about Final Fantasy 9?

It is the worst selling of the 3D Final Fantasy's yet it is usually considered far better

I agree. On the subject of cult classic films I hated Spaceballs, that film is not funny in the slightest

Psychonauts.

I got hold of a copy a year ago as everyone talked about how it was the epitome of great gaming. It's just an average platformer set against some crazy backgrounds that are supposed to be deep and representative of the human psyche, they're really not.

The main character comes off as smug, and not at all interesting but the writers obviously thought he was hilarious. It's like a comedian pausing for people to laugh but no-one is.

I see a lot of people do not understand the meaning of the phrase Cult Classic and are turning it into another one of those "Which game do you think sucks?" threads...

Deus Ex. I loved it when it came out, but it really hasn't aged well at all. See also: Vagrant Story.

Also, on movies side, I never thought that Boys in the Hood was any good. Apparently it's a masterpiece, but I just don't see it.

I really don't know why I even commented on this thread, it seems purpose built to provoke hate.

Mainly from me, when anyone mentions Evil Dead or the original Fallouts. MUST RESTRAIN SELF
I'm going to have to agree with Deus Ex as well. It kind of annoys me when everyone blindly praises it as DA BEST ARPEEGEEE EVUR. When I played it it was terrible, there was nothing interesting about it.
How about THE PLOT.

Yeah, agreed. So, the game is clunky, and it looks terrible and sounds terrible too (not that those last two really matter or are anything to do with my opinion of the game personally), but it's good because... you can change things? and there are choices? You can change things in a lot of games these days, perhaps not to the extent that things can be changed in Deus Ex (I wouldn't know, I didn't subject myself through enough of the game to really be able to argue that at this point) and many games now have choices which effect the way the game plays out... But even disregarding all that and saying that Deus Ex does indeed succeed in this area even by today's standards, the game still plays terribly, and is an unintuitive and clunky mess, so how is it a good game?
why it is a good game :

If that doesn't convince you, you may just have different tastes in term of ambiance and storytelling.

Personally I don't think any less of someone who can't get into a game because the graphisms are dated, I had this problem sometimes with a few really old games, it makes it harder to forgive the unintuitive controls, so I understand.
The industry could really use a publisher that specialise in reeditions of games, but with better graphics and streamlined controls.

That said I am interested in how do you think think Deus ex's control could be improved, and if you have any games in mind that you think could change my opinion.

I'm not sure if this counts, but Deus Ex was boring, looked goddamn horrible, and had almost nothing going for it in my mind.
Don't worry, it's awful by today's standards. Most of the people on the internet who say how amazing it is, either haven't played it for about 8 years and don't realize it doesn't hold up as a good game anymore; or are looking back through rose tinted glasses and refusing to see how bad it is now. (note before people flame me that I didn't say all people, but I do believe for the most part that is the truth) I'm sure it was a great game at its time and I respect that, but that doesn't mean its just as good now when everything it did has been done 10 times better.

So yeah, I am going to go with Deus Ex as well.
I was just playing today actually. Oh yeah, it looks like...well, it's hard to describe ^^'. But let's say 'bad' for the moment. However, it still plays well, and well, there really is nothing like it in modern gaming. Mostly because of the fact it's an FPS/RPG Hybrid rather than purely an FPS, and really, when is the last time they made one of those? BioShock? Hah.

I'm curious as to the elements you think other games have done '10 times better'? You mean open level design, where, you're generally free to complete an objective in multiple different ways? An overarching plot with varied characters and sub-plots? (I won't defend the dialogue though, a lot of it was rather cheesy.)

So no, I don't think it's a bad game, it's old yeah, but that doesn't mean squat. Old or new.

Ontopic though: XIII. It looked pretty nice, but I just couldn't get into once I got playing, Ithink I gave up after the first few levels.

Put in another vote for Earthbound. It might get good eventually, but to me it seemed like a very mediocre "rpg" without tactics or choice to speak of, set in the world of Charlie Brown. The music was torture. I spent majority of the time running around a small area reading through NPC messages and hoping to get somewhere. When after first 3 hours nothing much had changed, I gave up. If a game takes that long to get started it's not worth the effort.

I've met some people, real life and not, that cram the idea of playing a Cult Classic. "They don't sell well so they're cult classics. You have to buy them. Now."
But some of them really do suck.
I hated Nights: Journey of Dreams and thought Parappa average.

Edit: READ THIS
A cult classic is a game loved by a small group of people. It's gained little following in mainstream audiences, but large followings by nerds and small groups. It's not a game that's though a "Classic" like FFVII.
The very reason these games are cult classics rather than just classics is that there's only a small group of people who think they're classics.

If you don't like them, congratulations, you're with the majority.
I did like Gitaroo Man.

Fallout 3 was kinda "Meh". A lot of people tell me that it was sooo great.
Not really a cult classic.
Yeah, but I can see it being referred to as such one day.
It won't be, unless its you referring to it as such.

Massive game, massive appeal, massive sales.

Not cult.
I firmly believe Eraserhead is the worst movie ever. My brother made me watch that rotten pile of feces.

The first 2 fallout games. Top-down rpgs aren't my type. Also Battletoads, because that game made me wear my ass as a hat! I almost broke my pc (played it on an emulator). One more would be Ico. I rented it and tried to get into it, but couldn't... SotC on the other hand was brilliant!

And also 6 (ok 3) movies, that I never got into and as I know are adored by many nerds: Star Wars. Not the 1, and 3, all of them. I never enjoyed space adventures, with the exception of Mass Effect which made me fall in love with it.
