I think this article is far too specific. Pirating helps nobody. An article stating that some consoles were getting bricked would be fine, telling us how to get around it and to check it out is wrong

Is it evil of me to be amused by this? Sucks if you happen to lose your console through this, but that's what you get for trying to pirate games.

Good luck trying to explain this to Sony support.

Not too sure if I'm getting the right angle here, but it seems the Escapist is helping piracy in some way. I mean, why give people warning? If you get your console bricked because of piracy, then that seems like karma to me.

ha, take that for trying to run pirated games. I have nothing but happyness in this news, hope more of them ruin their systems.

Wait, so is this only affecting people with teh dodgy shitz on their console?

Because that's what the comments are saying but the article isn't really clear. And if this does only affect pirates, why is the Escapist linking to a list that helps them out?

pfft, thats what happens whe you pirate, serves them right.
Guys, not all homebrew is piracy, very little of it is.

Hell, I was going to install it because a guy was working on the PS3 to support more video codecs and because I want to see what homebrew games will come out of this.

That's what can happen when you hack your system and try to do things like that. I'm not surprised.

This news still makes me happy.

Wait a second, it honestly sounds like this article is supporting and helping with this "custom firmware" stuff... which is, essentially, promoting piracy. Isn't that rather hypocritical on the Escapist?

PS3-hacks.com has a full list of PS3 models that will brick with the CFW available, with both Slim and Fat PS3s listed. If you must install Custom Firmware 3.55 today, check the list and make sure your model isn't listed.
It's like "if you must download a pirated game, check and make sure the site isn't being watched by the FBI" ...lol

Anyway, sucks to have it bricked but I guess that's what you get for trying to do illegal things

Hmm interesting point. I definitely would like more codec support, but that's about the only legit purpose for it I can see right now. Not sure about homebrew games... isn't that like indie titles...? On PSN? Or even freeware on PC?

But anyway. Yes, more codec support would be great!

Because the Escapist reports Video Game Industry related news. And seeing as how Sony and the Playstation are one of the big three in the gaming world, it seems relevant.

The Escapist isn't playing the good guy or bad guy here, they just simply are.

I, however, am totally cool with piracy. But if your machine breaks because you wanted to break the law, you really have no leg to stand on. It's unfortunate, but that's the risk you take.

The PSN has very fucked up requirements.

With this, there are none.

But, yes, better codec support is always good.

I want my .mkv support Loli-Dammeet.

I dunno, just made me happy.

As the person above me said, a majority of people will use it for piracy. Majority against Minority.

OT: I never understood this weird desire to screw around like that with your console.

This makes me glad to be a square.

Personally; serves people right to install firmware that plays pirated games. I like my PS3 decidedly not broken thanks.

The only thing I have modified is my iPhone and that's only because Jailbreaking is legal.

umm good example, most of the last minute is snes9x and visual boy advance playing pirated games...

on topic, as the firmware update is unofficial, you take your consoles life in your hands when you use it.

Sure, and most people buy Playboy for the interviews.

I know a small number of people have legitimate uses for homebrew, but the vast majority will use custom firmware to illegally obtain games or emulate ROMs of other systems they do not own either.

Yes Sony sucks for their lacking codec support on the PS3 but it's not as if there aren't non-piracy-enabling ways to get around this... I use PS3 Media Server to play my .mkv videos and it works great. When I get my next paycheck I'm building an XMBC and that will also work.

There is no excuse for piracy-enabling firmware. Pirates are destroying the industry, just look at the recent COD news for another reason why this is so if the theft alone is not convincing enough.

2percent tops of the people who download this are not using it for pirated games, tehy may also play homebrew, but its basically all Pirated games. Thus I smile and laugh at anyone who got bricked by this.
Well, I know several people who downloaded it and are now freaking the fuck out wondering if it is also a delayed bricking.

Well, fuck the majority. Because of them, most would label me as a pirate. I just want community driven content and support.

Also, not all Loli is sexual. Hell, the term can also refer to your own daughter. Hence forth, i.e a Loli. Plus, Loli is not CP, please do not equate it with such.

Damn, massive post.
