IMO Mark Hamill and Heath Ledger are the two best jokers to date, they only keep solidifying the joker's position as my #1 favorite villain. Retireing the joker is like retireing Mickey Mouse simply because the original voice actor dies. You can't do it, there is no Batman movie franchise without him showing up in at least once movie. He's Batman's arch nemesis, what are we going to do? Put him up against villains like the riddler or the penguin simply because Heath Ledger Rockd our Sox in the Dark Knight?

Every actor has his own take on a character, to take away the joker simply to preserve Ledger's performance is short sighted an idiotic. To do so we might miss opportunities to watch other young actors portray everyone's favorite clown in even more spectacular ways.

Well, i agree the character should be relieved from being in any more films, but not because of Heath's performance, as amazing as it truly was.

I think it'd just be ridiculous for the creators of the current batman movies to carry on with the Joker story, considering their actor is dead.

But also, i think it's going beyond comfort when the same character has been portrayed in two different films from different eras (Batman not-with-standing).
Let him rest and only exist in peoples memories... and collector's edition comics and DVD's...

I still like Jack better because he was more true to the comic idea and was perma-white. It IS NOT MAKE-UP DAMMIT! That is the Joker's skin color!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

No. Joker IS Batman. And I'm dubious as to if Heath is better then MARK HAMMIL!

All different personalities have been explored now. The jokey Joker, the psychopath Joker, the slightly homoerotic Joker. They have all been mastered and nobody will ever be judged fairly on their own take on the Joker.
But retiring him altogether is ridiculous due to the fact that you can't have Batman without Joker.

Mark Hamill in Batman Beyond - Return Of The Joker was far more menacing given what he did to Tim Drake (and then over the course of about eighty years and from beyond the grave, in fact).
I mean, LOOK at what he did:

And this will no doubt be reinforced by Arkham Asylum if the trailer is anything to go by.

Heath made a great joker, and arguably probably one of the best portrayals of the character. But it wasn't the best or truest joker there could be. They played up certain aspect really good, but it could have been even better. The character could have been even more unpredictable, even more creepier. While there is a danger that somebody else might not live up to Heath, especially if they ape after the TDK portrayal, Heath's joker is not the definitive interpretation.

i think it's stupid. Heath played a good Joker but he wasn't a great joker and Hammill played a great Joker, a friend gave me a good reasoning behind it too.

for one the Joker is rather sinister. at first glance he appears to be a nice clown, however the closer you get and figure out, you realize he's NOT a good clown but some sort of evil person. Hammill was both of those. the Joker always had a joke behind what he was doing, he wanted a laugh

The joker is the all time favourite among Batman villains, and even if I agree that Heath Ledgers performance was indeed as good as it gets I still wouldn't want to remove the Joker from any future movies. But if the next batman film features the Joker then the director has made a huge mistake.

Heath did a good job as the Joker, but I felt that he lacked the psychotic humor of the previous incarnations. Instead of using electric joy buzzers or toxin spraying flowers, he used boring old conventional weaponry (the pencil was funny though).

My favorite Joker of all time is definitely the one from the animated series, but my favorite live action portrayal is Jack Nicholson's.
If people had said the same thing after Jack Nicholson's performance in 1989's Batman, we wouldn't have ever gotten Heath Ledger in the first place.
Said it best right there, really.

Seeing as each Joker was a reflection of the time period they were written in the next Joker will be different from the one we have now. I have to say that all the Jokers work well for the type of show/movie they were in. Nolan won't be making Batman movies forever, and who knows what the next incarnation of the Joker will be.

Heath Ledger Joker is in the zeitgeist, but Jack Nicholson would totally smoke his ass 1 on 1.

I'm waiting for Dakota Fanning Joker adaptation.
