Scientology =/= religion. Anything that requires you to spend vast sums of money to move up and learn more is nothing more than a scam.
Have you heard of Mormonism? Just checking.
I am a mormon. Where are you going with this? From where I stand it looks like a dead end.

But it's such fun...

But actually they're mocking any religion, which has very tight doctrines and prophecies it must fulfill.

With no hint that unitology requires financial payments to get involved it can't be a direct reference to Scientology. It would have been wet your pants hysterical if Altman was modelled after Tom Cruise though!
Actually in some comic or other they mentioned that Isaac's mom donated all of their money to Unitology when he was young... but I (and probably most people) still didn't make any of these connections until I saw this article, so it may be unrelated.

Scientologists are one group that I really think you don't have to worry about offending. After all, they aren't really people with IQs that low.

My first reaction was exactly "hah scientology I see what you did there"

Obviously the studio is going to steer away, you don't want to wake up with a dead horse and a lawsuit in your bed.

But (between us gamers and rationally thinking people) denying the prank is just being stupid. And it was brilliantly done, adding a "I am surrounded by idiots" entertainment aspect to an otherwise incredibly suspense game.

The only thing missing is a South Park-style spoof movie of the origin of the religion, that would nail it.

I saw a video that claimed it described what Mormons believed in, would you mind taking a look and telling me if this is what you as a Mormon do believe in?

WHY would anyone even NEED TO walk on eggshells for anyone, especially when those people are nutcases? If they feel offended, BRAVO! Deal with it! You have freedom to rebuke, but NOT freedom to not be offended.

The reason Unitology seems like Scientology is because Scientology is a parody of ALL religious and faith based organizations. Seriously, to those griping about how scientology steals your money, look up "plenary indulgences". The Scientology system isn't some weird aberration, it's simply too new and hasn't had all the rough edges smoothed off by time and tradition.

More importantly, unlike Scientology, which is entirely and CLEARLY made up, Unitology derives its belief from a mysterious and inexplicable but quite real object. Just as most religions/cults are essentially attempts to make sense of the inexplicable so is Unitology.

Hmm I thought Unitology was quite similar to Scientology with the worshiping aliens thing, although only the fanatics really caused any real harm which is probably a commentary on cults and possibly the more hardcore religions

I guess they're saying "religion is all well and good until someone gets their eye poked out over it"

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
Yeah never even saw the connection between the two religions in all my numerous playthroughs of the first game or my current playthrough to Dead Space 2.

Sciencetology is the kind of out of this world bullshit, that no sane person can take seriously.

Typical scientologists, lawyers on hold to scrounge as much money as possible out of any perceived slight at their ridiculous fairytale. It's a wonder that you Americans stand for this kind of thing! In Britain, we at least have the excuse of the pc culture.

For all the work they spend trying to offend people's moms, they sure don't want to offend anyone else. I can see why they would want to try and stay away from any accusations. But, if you do actually play Dead Space (or especially watch Dead Space: Downfall) you'll see how his explanation does actually make a lot of sense.

EDIT: Jeeze, guys, you know this is a thread about Dead Space?

The irony is so shiny... its like iron.

OT: Scientology is in its own field and "Unitology" in Dead Space 2 was so far out their it made me laugh. It doesn't matter anyway, unless Tom Cruise takes offense. Wait did he stop being a Scientologist or am I behind on the latest Celeb update?

lol, no. Its pretty much just like being protestant (mormon convert here) except that we got the whole Joseph Smith thing.

Given Scientology's penchant for rampant lawsuits at the slightest criticisms, I really don't blame him.

I think he's afraid of lawsuits. Scientologists are notorious for suing people into poverty for speaking against them.

But I like the idea that the marker is just alien technology so highly advanced that it looks like magic to us, something that our primitive lizard brain wants to worship and prostrate before.

Right, they don't toss out lawsuits all the time....oh wait.

I think he's protecting his pocketbook, which is understandable. As for the OP, no need to toss the word "fictional" infront of religion. We can tell when it's fictional (hint: It's in a video game.....or it's a religion)
