Dead Space 3 Needs 5 Million Sales Or Franchise Goes Bust, Says EA

Well DS3 seems good as any to end the franchise. Hope Visceral move onto new and exciting things!

Hopefully never ever working with EA ever again.
It's like EA is trying to kill Visceral. They give them an almost impossible demand and end a milked franchise (possibly also done by EA rather than Visceral) and they might possibly destroy Visceral money-wise if they decide to leave them.

On the one hand, I hate the idea that EA would kill a series if it's not obnoxiously successful as opposed to merely really successful.

On the other hand, three games is a good place for a series like Dead Space to end. It doesn't need to go on any longer than that.

You mean if Dead Space 3 doesn't sell an arbitrary amount then the fourth (and inevitably terrible) sequel will never be released??!!

Oh no say it isn't so

Doesn't matter how good a franchise is, if you can't get a decent story out in the first 3 installments you don't deserve a fourth attempt.

Of course that would be assuming that EA isn't just creating the 3rd game and releasing these ridiculous sales requirements just because they want a shit ton of cash... oh wait

And I'm sure the measured and calm response from the Escapist forums won't at all paint EA as some sort of hybrid of Tyrell and Weyland-Yutani.

As for the news story...

I dunno. It sounds like a bit of a big target, but on the other hand they've made three games and it has yet to reach the sort of numbers that long running franchises like FF, ME or MW have (OMG.) Everyone is looking for the big numbers, and although Dead Space had the potential to be one of those mega-sellers, it's never quite made it. It just kind of sits there with a very respectable user base and some favourable reviews not doing much else. It hasn't spawned talks of a big-budget movie, it hasn't been in contention for most people's Game of the Year, it hasn't had widespread media coverage outside of the gaming world (a la Mass Effect, Modern Warfare)

Under the circumstances I think 3 games is probably quite a good run for any series. Trilogies are nice, they can be wrapped up neatly, and they provide enough for people to go back and play through again.

"Dead Space" will be cancelled if Dead Space 3 does not make $5 Million.
Look, if you still don't get it, EA will kill the Dead Space franchise if 5 million copies aren't sold, even though both of the previous games averaged 2 million and got decent reviews from Yahtzee.
1. This is old news.
2. Sort your shit out please, you contradict yourself in your original post a lot.

Wait wait ... Do they need to sell 5 million copies? Or make 5 million dollors in profit ? Because what you title says and what the OP says are two different things . There is no way DS3 is selling 5 million copies so if that's what they are aimin for , they are screwed . 5 million dollors in profit is possible though , but still a Pretty high number . Exactly how many copies of the games needs to be sold to generate 5 million dollars in profit?
Ignoring the OPs schizophrenic post, EA wants Dead Space 3 to shift 5 million units, this was reported last month (possibly the month before) here on The Escapist.

Good, let it die if it is no longer going to be Dead Space. I am not interested in playing Gears of War 5. I also hope Ea gets hurt by the failure this brings, just one step closer to this nightmare ending.

Are they kidding? Breaking 5 million copies as a basic expectation is insane for a single game like this. WHY are they demanding such drastic sales numbers?
Probably to breakeven over the extra cost it takes to give the third game all those "EPIC Moments" they added.

... Why is this a problem, I dont get it. Dead space 3 will surely break that number of copies sold, why are your all whinning...

Oh.

They sold so little? I thougt DS sold around 10 millions or so. Oh well whatever, I guess I am not good with this.

STILL thougt, it dosnt seems to be utterly IMPOSSIBLE to sell that many copies, specially considerating than it is going to take a more shooty, actiony and covery take on it, meaning more people will like it. Probably.

5 million copies... you are acting to cocky, EA.

I'll be laughing my ass off if the game bombs.

Never buy anything new from EA or Activision. If you absolutely have to play it then rent it, buy it used, or borrow from a friend. But better yet avoid their products entirely.

Remember that for every dollar you give to EA the vast majority is taken by the executives and stockholders, people who do nothing to create games other than sit on a pile of money probably inherited from their daddies.

The people who actually created the game already got paid. As announcements like this show the creators are probably going to get screwed on any promised bonuses anyway due to hollywood accounting.

------------

Spend your money on self published games or games by publishers that at least appear to care more about creating great experiences than they do about quarterly reports.

I fixed it. Sorry, I'm horrible at checking over my work unless I get spelling wrong.

Just wanted to say like a lot of other people are saying that I don't mind if the franchise went OF ITS OWN ACCORD. EA milking this thing to death? No. Visceral ending the trilogy grandly and with some big explosions? Hell yes.

There's a difference between creatively ending something and being screwed over.

And just to be clear, it'll be Dead Space that EA cancel. Visceral's busy with the new Army Of Two, so they're safe until it launches.

Is it just me, or when EA says "We want it to appeal to a wider audience while not alienating the devoted fans." it really means "We're alienating the devoted fans by removing anything that's not an element of a shooter game to appeal to a wider audience."

No, that's what everyone thinks. I honestly can't decide which is worse- Activision for publishing COD, or EA for trying to make themselves better?

Yeah, we actually had a news thread about it on this very website.

Anyway, Dead Space is all right but nothing about it ever really intrigued me. It's about as generic as they come, jump scares galore and predictable 'horror' elements like brightly lit rooms that suddenly get sealed off and go dark once you just happen to enter. Sure, they're pretty solid games, but still. Dark Souls has made me more scared for my in-game life than Dead Space ever did.

It already ended on the first game.

No.

Are they serious?
They'll actually kill this bloody franchise when it tanks?
You mean I can feel even more accomplished by not buying something from EA?
Hot damn, this is great. I can't wait to see DS3 go down in flames, taking its piss-poor excuse for a survival-horror series with it.
