the Mass Effect games as well as Dragon Age come to mind.

if you can handle jrpgs, then I'd say Lost Odyssey would be a great pick, though the histroy revolves around only one character, mostly

Bioshock has an absolutely amazing story and Mass Effect is another that does a really great job immersing you into the outer space environment through its epic story as well.

I would if it were better executed. Even when paying attention to the cut scenes for the story based quests, it's often a bit unclear and not explained very well IMO.

If you're up for some old-school gaming, Final Fantasy Tactics is pretty much nothing but political intrigue.
This brings up an interesting point. Can you really classify FFT as "old school" when it's only twelve years old?

I don't really see why so many people refer to two generations ago being "old school". Games haven't really changed that much from the fifth generation to the present, they've just gotten super serious (for mature gamers of course!) and had a graphics makeover. You're still controlling either a 3D character or a gun attached to a camera, just like you were in 1998.

I figure that the term "old school" is more descriptive of the third and fourth generation since it stands to reason that a fair amount of the current gaming market were very young children around that time.

Depends on the way you like things but Bioshock has a very deep background story and a beautiful art style, the actual gameplay story on the other hand, although good, is not quite so clever. Bioshock 2 has more of the art style but the story is unfortunately not quite so well padded out as the backstory was mostly told in the first game. I think main story wise I preferred the sequel but that's more because I felt emotionally connected to the character you were trying to rescue.
This pretty much says it.

Maybe give SIlent Hill: Shattered Memories a try. That game kicks your mind's metaphorical ass up and down the street, to put it bluntly.

Nobody has said Silent Hill 2 yet, I'm baffled.

So yeah, Silent Hill 2 - without a doubt one of the most perfectly told stories ever to be featured in a video game. Furthermore, the atmosphere of that game is absoloutely dripping with symbolism and imagery; not only is the main storyline awesome, but you'll also come across a number of cryptic, and often disturbing letters/memos which shine light on the very troubled past of Silent Hill. Truly a brilliant game in every sense of the word.

If fantasy dragons and elves are not your thing you can try out Mass Effect 2
Have to respectfully disagree there. Try Mass Effect 1, OP. They removed everything that made Mass Effect special in the sequel imo and replaced it with ZOMG BIG COVER MECHANIC GUN BATTLES AND EXPLOSIONS!1!! They basically made a great third person shooter/RPG hybrid into a bad third person shooter that claims to have RPG "elements" (I.E. none at all). Only time Bioware has ever disappointed me, but I guess they're still trying to find their perfect niche with this type of game, as they did with pure RPGs long ago.

Anyhow, OP, if you're into more than just RPGs you might give Deus Ex a try if you've not played it. It's on the old side and it definitely shows its age, but I'd rank it in the top two or three games I've ever played. Hell, I'm replaying it at the moment for the, oh, probably fifth or sixth time in half as many years. Reviews:

This too! If Deus Ex was in my top two or three favorite games ever, Silent Hill 2 would be at the top of the list.

Two bits: Mass Effect is just awesome for this. The overarching storyline(s) are really good, the writing is stellar (no pun intended) and the detail to all the various races, planets etc is phenomenal.

Second bit is that you said WoW doesn't have a lot of lore, books, etc. For this I shall label you a dumbass, and direct you to the World of WarCraft Wiki [http://www.wowwiki.com/Portal:Main].

I found Bioshock 1 to be very intriguing.
To bad its so linear, I think a game like that needs to be more open ended, even if its just to see more places and find out more about the freaking near post apocalyptic underwater world your in.
I mean come on such a great collection of unique, cool and bizarre ideas, but its sort of wasted in the fact that you progress down the same old corridors but all that seems to change each time is a new gun upgrade or some new ammo you took from the millionth identical splicer you killed.

Stalker Shadow of Chernobyl i found pretty intriguing as well.
Mainly the plot which makes you wonder just what happened to the amnesiac protagonist for once.
Oh and the fact your in a strange world full of mutants and different factions of heavily accents Russians trying to constantly kill each other.
The plot seems to solve itself too quickly, but your in a world where weird, crazy, scary cool stuff happens.
Unfortunately you dont get much information from NPCs on just what the hell is going on.
But that makes it sort of feel like everyone is accustomed to the everyday life of trying to not get eaten or shot for another day, which kind of makes the world more intriguing.

The problems it had, mainly lack of side missions, the bugs and crashes and the fact you get the best weapons and armour within 2 hours are fixed with the most recent Stalker game, Stalker Call of Pripyat.

I like this game so much that i reckon the only bad thing worth mentioning is that there needs to be more of it.
