Pretty much.

Surely you remember the March Mayhem polls they used to do (still do?) here? This is essentially Papers Please vs THe Last of Us over again.

It's an exercise in futility anyway:

"Here are my/our utterly subjective judgements on the quality and/or enjoyability of a bunch of games."
"Your utterly subjective judgements on the quality and/or enjoyability of a bunch of games are bullshit! Here are my utterly subjective judgements on the quality and/or enjoyability of a bunch of games."

Because people did, big time. Hell, I saw people on tumblr begging others who hadn't even played the game to go vote for it. And if you look at Undertale's voting pattern, I'm sure you'd notice a strange trend where it's even/lagging behind it's opponent before suddenly surging ahead.

*Sigh* God, I love the game to death, but the fanbase... Ah well. It's just some voting poll on the internet.

Sorry to break this to you people were doing the same for the other games, along with insulting fans of Undertale and claiming the game should never have been in the poll, harassing other members, etc.

If you want to call out a fanbase for shady shit, don't just get pissy with the Undertale fandom. Nice try with the underhanded comment though.

For all time!? You can't take any vote like that seriously. Undertale delivers something different though, that's important.

Also, I noticed recently that Undertales score fell on Metacritic.

Yes, you're setting a sterling example of the behavior I should expect.

And given how I've seen Undertale fans harass non-fans for "just not getting it," and harass youtubers for "not playing the game right," and even harass other fans for not liking it the right way, I think I will call them out for shady shit, thanks.

To be fair, it *was* pretty hilarious to watch how angry the hardcore Ocarina of Time fans were getting about it. They're almost as bad as the really hardcore Final Fantasy VII fans, lol.

Ocarina of Time isn't even the best Zelda game. The most influential, definitely, and a wonderful game in its own right. On the other hand, Twilight Princess did basically everything Ocarina of Time did, but better. There's a really good argument for Wind Waker being the best Zelda game as well.

As far as a contest between Undertale and Ocarina of Time, well, it depends what you're looking for. In terms of pure gameplay, OoT wins hands down. But Undertale definitely wins out in terms of story and characters (since OoT barely has either of those).

1. It's not.
2. Nothing is.
3. GOTY is a reasonable distinction, GOAT is fucking ridiculous. Games are defined and measured by their eras. I'm tentatively willing to declare certain games as "currently best in genre" with a billion stipulations, but "best of all time"? Ridiculous. Pure wankery. I'll not stand for it.

Yeeeeeah, that was my thought. GameFAQs is not where I go for any sort of binding agreement over anything gaming related.

I'd argue that the moment you get into this territory, you're at least brushing up against the lines between reason and tribalism. And probably more than that. People get really passionate about games, like there's something serious. You know, real issues like the best sports teams, or which Lamborghini is the best.

It seems really hard to just casually discuss best games between fanbases.

I dunno, I think this website is kicking up way more of a fuss than it should be. I've been a member of GameFAQs for a decade now, during that time I've voted in more than 95% of their daily polls. I didn't really take them as anything that profound or insightful - it's mostly for fun. And their almost annual battles are just an extension to that, not something that would, or could, hold up as a really serious scientific research.
While I was an active poster at GameFAQs, there was a tremendous amount of outrage when the polls didn't go X way or properly denounce Y. I mean, I'm no fan of Y, but I don't see why all the hate. Okay, but more seriously, it wasn't uncommon to see people complaining about the site or community being biased towards/against Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony all at the same time. It's unsurprising to see the same responses being carried off-site as though it was something other than "popular game wins popularity contest." And of course people are going to be pissed that the game they like lost to a game someone else likes.

Hell, look at the GOTY kerfuffle every year.

You forgot the part where at least one party then tries to pass off their subjective views as factual or even objective, but pretty much.

Pretty much every major poll on that site (and some of the dailies) have been like that.

...I've actually upset people by asking why the hell there was a call to arms over a daily GameFAQS poll. I got little in the way of direct answers (more along the lines of being told to perform anatomically impossible acts), but it seemed to boil down to this:

Never reject a call to arms, friends. Daily GFAQS polls are srs business.

Fine by me, so long as people acknowledge the shady shit other fandoms pulled. This was a carnival of jackassery, dear, not a solo act.

And this is why you don't put recently released games on a Best of All Time poll. Undertale is fine, but the thing is any place in "greatest of all time" is going to have to be discussed years after release to determine whether or not a game was truly great and inspirational (like Zelda: OoT, FFVII, Pokemon, Chrono Trigger, etc) or just a flavor-of-the-month, flash-in-the-pan title. Perspective and context is important, like how OoT essentially codified mechanics we take for granted like the lock-on and being able to manipulate the camera while FFVII is a game whose success that people (including Square themselves) have desperately been trying to replicate for nearly twenty years, mostly by imitating it (often badly).

GameFAQs hardly has a scientifically rigorous means of determining which game is best, but anything that hits the top five is at least worth further investigation.

Well to be fair the Undertale fandom isn't exactly the best. Though I get your point you're saying that if you complain about fandoms you shouldn't just get angry at the Undertale fandom.

As a side note, it's kind of interesting how in this thread people discussing the competition are actually calling it something different and thus distorting the meaning. The competition is not about the "greatest game of all time". That implies a level of seriousness that the original title "Best. Game. Ever." does not.

It is, once again, something for fun. Moreover, the very description of the contest dispells any notion that this is in supposed to be "like all real, guyz! For realzies"

The actual description of the actual contest said:
don't forget: This is not a contest to see which game is your favorite, or even which one is the best rated. It's all a big popularity contest, and visitors who have never visited GameFAQs before will be sure to stop in and vote.

So, should have Undertale won? Is it, like, the bestest game? Umm, yeah, that poll is entirely the wrong thing to look at for answers.

While I'm certain Undertale is a good game - after all, I've only heard good things about it - the merit behind this "award" is greatly diminished by three simple words: "The GameFAQs Community"

Best thing to do with a best game of all time poll is to ignore it no good will come of it. Having played Undertale I can say it is a fine game but one I tired of pretty quickly and will likely forget about fairly quickly to. I must admit I did not complete it I just got to a point where I was playing it for the sake of playing rather than enjoying it so decided to quit. It does have charm though I will give it that but like with Tearaway charm alone is not enough to get me through games anymore, personally I found the combat went very quickly from fun novelty to extreme tedium and even annoyance at stages.

Im just waiting for the true best game of all time that will be released in the future but was featured in the past on Red Dwarf `Better than Life` im gonna play the shit outta that game.

Especially the wrong Zelda.
Yes. A Link to the Past would be the correct one... followed by Majora's Mask :)

Also, to be best of all time you would need to be past five or ten years. Then if people still love it (even through rose-tinted diapers) you could make an argument for it.

Also, you should have won a lot of Game of the Year awards first before going for best all-time.

It was indeed bombed. I was listening to some Undertale tracks via YouTube earlier and found that someone was chewing out another user for rallying outsiders to do just that, naming him the perpetrator. Said perpetrator defended himself by saying that what one is supposed to do with voting and polls.

And yeah, this wouldn't be possible if Undertale itself wasn't already of very appreciable quality. That said, try this again in a year or so; Undertale probably won't do nearly as well. That's the fickleness of popularity contests such as these.

Is it really that good?

I didn't enjoy Earthbound that much, so I'm curious if this game is like the epitome of story telling or something.
A new game never rises to popularity that fast, so ya its pretty good. Not for everyone of course there is no game for everyone.
I don't think that's necessarily true. We usually give preference to our last positive experience because it's fresh in the mind.

But I'm sure this game is really good from everything I've read. Best of all time? Almost certainly not.
